  12.        I am an avid family history researcher and a PAF user, as well as
  13.        an interested observer of the electronic bulletin board phenomena. 
  14.        In late 1992 I started looking around the BBS world to see what
  15.        utilities might be available to enhance PAF.  I looked first on my
  16.        favorite local BBS, Hackers Haven.  This is normally one of the best
  17.        places in Utah to look for files.  A couple of PAF related utilities
  18.        were there, although they were quite old.  Next came Channel 1 and
  19.        Exec-PC, two of the largest BBSes in the country, where I found a
  20.        few more of these utilities.  Again most were older.  I then checked
  21.        in CompuServe's Genealogy Forum.  I found more programs, including
  22.        some that were very recent.  After several weeks searching, I had
  23.        located more than 50 programs!  However this required my contacting
  24.        and sorting through the file lists of several dozen different BBSes.

  26.        PAF is a very popular program among genealogists.  It surprised me
  27.        that shareware for PAF was not more readily available.  During my
  28.        review I also found it difficult to determine which was the latest
  29.        version of each program and to locate current copies.  Perhaps
  30.        someday the Genealogy Software Distribution System (GSDS) will solve
  31.        this problem, making the latest versions of these files rapidly
  32.        available throughout the world.  For now, it takes some sleuth work
  33.        and a lot of long distance calls to find what you are looking for!

  35.        PAF Review is an effort to share the information I've gathered, to
  36.        save others the same time and expense.  I hope this will help make
  37.        these programs widely available and encourage present and potential
  38.        shareware/freeware authors to continue their development of quality
  39.        utilities for PAF.  I plan to include all programs which are helpful
  40.        to users of PAF or to programmers who want to access data from PAF. 
  41.        This includes programs aimed at easing the transfer of information
  42.        between PAF and other genealogy programs, including FamilySearch.

  44.        For the present I have decided not to include programs that are only
  45.        available as commercial products.  I have included several which are
  46.        restricted versions (designated Demo) or which have newer versions
  47.        that are commercial programs.  Several readers of PAF Review have
  48.        suggested that I expand its scope to include all PAF related
  49.        software, whether shareware or commercial.  Perhaps I will do so
  50.        when I have tracked down and included all (I may have to be
  51.        satisfied with 99%!) of my current targets.

  59.        There are 109 entries in edition 93.4 of PAF Review, up from 101 in
  60.        the last edition.  There were 8 additions, while 9 of the previous
  61.        entries have been updated to describe newer versions or to correct
  62.        or expand descriptive information.  Seven of the new entries
  63.        represent new programs, some of which I am just "newly aware" of. 
  64.        The other is for a new freeware demo of Jan Unter's popular
  65.        HotNotes! commercial program.  A new file, README.CHG, has been
  66.        added listing files that have been added or changed.  Three more
  67.        review files have been added.  These contain subjective review
  68.        information on the functioning and value of the program or file
  69.        being reviewed.  The reviews are still prototypes that may change
  70.        a lot after I put some more thought into this process.

  72.        The packaging of PAF Review has been changed.  Now the archive for
  73.        each version contains just three files: a README file, a BBS file
  74.        description in FILE_ID.DIZ and a self-extracting archive called
  75.        INSTALL.EXE.  Executing this third program will create all the other
  76.        files.  This was done because some BBSes would not allow both
  77.        versions to be uploaded since the files the "changes only" version 
  78.        contained were duplicated in the comprehensive version.  I am still
  79.        working on format that is less complicated to deal with, but very
  80.        early in the process.

  85.        Any material in PAF Review not quoted from others is copyright 1993
  86.        by Mike St. Clair.  You may upload copies of PAF Review to BBSes or
  87.        other information providers for free redistribution.  You may not
  88.        charge a fee for PAF Review beyond the cost of distribution.  BBSes
  89.        may provide PAF Review for downloading and post portions as
  90.        bulletins.  Users groups and genealogy organizations may reprint PAF
  91.        Review or include portions in their newsletters.  Individuals and
  92.        nonprofit organizations may use this material for any purpose other
  93.        than generating income without any other permission than is granted
  94.        in this section.  All other rights are reserved.

  97.        ║ File Naming/Edition Numbering for PAF Review ║

  99.        A CUMULATIVE edition of PAF Review will be issued around the first
  100.        of each month if any new utilities or releases have appeared.  The
  101.        file name will be PAFRV followed by a year (YY) and an issue
  102.        character starting with "1", incrementing until it reaches "9", then
  103.        starting through the alphabet beginning with "A".  This edition, the
  104.        fourth in 1993, is 93.4 with a file name of PAFRV934.ZIP.  Instead
  105.        of ZIP, the file extension may be LZH, ARJ, ARC, etc., depending on
  106.        the standards of the BBS where you find the file.  On CompuServe,
  107.        which limits file names to six characters, the filename will always
  108.        be PAFRV.ZIP omitting the date/edition from the name.

  110.        A "Changes Only" version will be issued simultaneously.  It will use
  111.        the same naming pattern but the file name will begin with PAFRC
  112.        instead of PAFRV.  This smaller version will not include information
  113.        on any programs/files that have not changed since the previous
  114.        edition of PAF Review.  A change could be a new program, a new
  115.        version, or a revision of the description to correct or improve it.

  123.        PAF Review may help you be more successful if current information
  124.        about your products is included.  Please let me know where you
  125.        upload new versions so I can check periodically. If you would
  126.        prefer, send me revisions or new utilities by mail. It's my goal to
  127.        see that the software in PAF Review is widely available.  I will be
  128.        regularly sending or uploading copies to the locations identified
  129.        in the next paragraph.  I will also be promoting distribution of
  130.        these files on the Genealogical Software Distribution System (GSDS),
  131.        which reaches all parts of the U.S. and some foreign locations.

  136.        The following sources will usually have the latest versions.  The
  137.        first two only allow paid subscribers to download.  The others allow
  138.        access at no charge, although a small donation to any BBS that you
  139.        use regularly would always be welcome.  For FidoNet BBSes, the
  140.        current node number is given.  Note that Ancestry is home of John
  141.        Grove, North American GSDS Coordinator.

  157.        Any BBS that deal with genealogy, particularly if participating in
  158.        GSDS, will have some or all of these files.  Your local FidoNet BBS
  159.        system operator may be willing to request files for you.  Be aware
  160.        that BBSes often post several versions of shareware programs.  Look
  161.        for the file name given in PAF Review.  The version number is often
  162.        part of the file description. CompuServe limits file names to six
  163.        characters which usually match the first six characters used in the
  164.        BBS file name.  Don't waste time downloading an outdated version if
  165.        the current one is available.

  167.        The Genealogy Software Catalog, 3500 Gentry, Irving, TX 75062 can
  168.        provide copies of any of these utilities.  The cost is $2 per disk. 
  169.        By mail, add $1.50 postage and packaging for the first, and $.50 for
  170.        each additional diskette.

  172.        For a copy of the entire set of files, send me formatted diskettes
  173.        (six 1.4MB/seven 1.2MB) and a large addressed diskette mailer with
  174.        the correct postage.  For updates, return one diskette and a similar
  175.        mailer.  Please be patient.  It may take up to several weeks for
  176.        your diskettes to be sent depending on the number of requests
  177.        outstanding.

  195.          PAFRV.DES    Contains a description of the purpose and contents
  196.                       of PAF Review.  It also solicits help from shareware
  197.                       authors and users to help keep PAF Review up to date
  198.                       and tells how to submit proposed updates.

  200.          PAFRV.SUM    Contains a summary of known PAF or GEDCOM related
  201.                       utilities including: name; latest version; version's
  202.                       date; size for downloading; shareware, freeware or
  203.                       demo; requested fee; author; and a description of no
  204.                       more than two lines (for 109 files in edition 93.4).

  206.          PAFRV.IDX    A simple index of the utilities by category
  207.  
  208.          XXXXXXXX.INF Each INF file will be one printed page and describe
  209.                       a particular program or file in more detail,
  210.                       including the file name by which it is normally
  211.                       found and the author's address if known.

  213.          XXXXXXXX.REV Each REV file will contain recent, subjective review
  214.                       information about a particular program.  There are
  215.                       still only a few REV files in this edition.

  221.        and complete as possible, I'm sure there are omissions and mistakes.

  247.        Many shareware authors develop programs for themselves and perhaps
  248.        a close circle of friends in response to an immediate need.  They
  249.        soon find these projects take ever larger amounts of time if the
  250.        product is to become easy, safe and enjoyable to use.  
  251.  
  252.        The most important thing you can do to encourage the author's
  253.        continued effort is to provide feedback.  Do you like the program? 
  254.        Is it useful?  How do you use it?  Are there problems?  Is it the
  255.        greatest thing since sliced bread?!  Please tell the author!
  256.  
  257.        The second most important thing is to register those products you
  258.        use regularly and make a payment if called for.  It costs money and
  259.        takes a lot of time to develop good software.  The authors deserve
  260.        and need your financial support in return for the software you find
  261.        useful and therefore use.  The fee is usually very nominal compared
  262.        to commercial software purchases - and you can try the software
  263.        first to know if it works for you!

  265.        I've heard from a number of PAF-related shareware authors who were
  266.        underwhelmed by the response they received.  Many authors stop
  267.        developing and improving their software because, without feedback,
  268.        they assume no one else recognized the genius of their idea.  Others
  269.        turn to developing commercial only programs.  Let's not let that
  270.        happen to these products that can make our research easier, more
  271.        productive and more enjoyable.

  277.        own.  The program descriptions are basically from the authors'
  278.        documentation, either printed or online, which I have edited to take
  279.        less room.  Any review comments are based on experience with the
  280.        software in question, either my own or that of a correspondent. 
  281.        While I take full responsibility for any inadvertent mistakes and
  282.        for my subjective opinions contained here (don't blame the program's
  283.        authors for what I say!), I can take no responsibility for problems
  284.        that occur because you use any program described in PAF Review.

  291.        Try new software out first on a copy of your data.  Use FRCHK before
  292.        and after your test to verify that you have data integrity both
  293.        before and after you run the new software.  Back up your data
  294.        frequently to allow you to recover from problems that may occur.

  297.        help you solve your PAF related problem of the moment.  If you don't
  298.        find what you are looking for, let me know that too.  Perhaps I will
  299.        add a wish list in the future for program authors to hear what is
  300.        needed but not available.  Right now someone is probably thinking
  301.        about writing the program you need.  It may be included in a future
  302.        version of PAF Review; perhaps even the next one!
