Welcome to GED-Treasure. This program is a treasure chest of GEDCOM utilities that are here to make life easier for the genealogist. FAST START: Hit F3 and enter the name of a GEDCOM file. From there you can:
- Get a list of separate family trees in your GEDCOM file
- Split a tree into a separate file
- Automatically
split all trees into their separate
files
- The above two options include more options: Split off only
ancestors, descendants, direct-line spouses, all spouses, or
just everybody in that tree.
- Specify the number of generations that you wish included in the split.
- View your GEDCOM file while a record-viewer displays
user-defined
fields.
Some GEDCOM files create source records that point to an individual. In the current program, this individual and his whole family tree will be included in a tree that is split off into a GEDCOM file, though the report shows them in separate trees. )

GEDCOM File View
This window allows you to peruse through your GEDCOM file to see what you have. Notice that as you scroll down the file, the window on the right side of your screen displays the current record in user-defined
fields. r
There are two ways to jump to another record. Use a mouse to click on a line that references that record. (For example, a line with a reference looks like this: 1 FAMC @F1@) The other method is by pressing "alt-r" and then entering the record that you wish to jump to. In the above example this would be "F1". Make sure that you use the same case (i.e., capital F). Y
You can pull up as many windows for the same file as your computer's memory will allow.
If your GEDCOM file has more than 30,000 lines, you cannot view your GEDCOM file. You can still split family trees and get a report of what trees you have. -

What is GEDCOM?
GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. You may have a computer program that stores your genealogy information. That information is stored on your computer in a way that only your computer program knows how to access. But what if you wanted to share your genealogy with another person who has another kind of a computer? 2
GEDCOM to the rescue! Most genealogy computer programs can make a GEDCOM file. So if you wanted to share your information with another person you would use your genealogy program to create a GEDCOM file. You can put that file on a floppy disk or send it over a modem to be "read" by the other computer.

Choose this command to change the size or position of the window.

If you press Shift while you use the arrow keys, you can change the size of the window. Once you've adjusted its size or position, press Enter. S
If the window has a Resize corner, you can drag that corner to resize the window.
Move
When you choose Window
Size/Move, the window moves in response to the arrow keys. Once you've moved the window to where you want it, press Enter. H
You can also move the window by dragging its title bar with the mouse.

Choose Zoom to resize the window to the maximum size. If the window is already zoomed, you can choose this command to restore it to its previous size. {
You can also double-click anywhere on the window's title bar (except where an icon appears) to zoom or unzoom the window.

The Name input box is where you enter the name of the GEDCOM file to fix, or the file-name mask to use as a filter for the Files list box (for example, *.GED).

The Change Directory dialog box consists of an input box, a list box, an OK button and two other buttons (Chdir and Revert). |
Directory Name
The Directory Name input box is where you type in the path of the new directory.

The Directory Tree list box enables you to navigate directories by using the selecting bar and pressing Enter.
If you're using the keyboard, press Enter to make the selected directory be the current directory, then choose OK or press Esc to exit the dialog box. +

The Chdir button changes the current directory once you've selected or typed in a directory name. +
[Revert]
The Revert button goes back to the previous directory, as long as you haven't yet exited the dialog box.

This allows you to jump to a certain record in your GEDCOM file. It is case-sensitive. You do not have to include the '@' characters.

View GEDCOM or Create A Report
Decide if you wish to view your GEDCOM file here. If your GEDCOM file contains over 30,000 lines, you cannot view it, but you can still create a tree report and split separate family trees into their own GEDCOM files. <
If you want to automatically
split off all trees into their separate GEDCOM files, you must choose to the "split trees" option here. If you choose to view your GEDCOM file now, you can create a report and split off one tree at a time, but not all automatically. This can be changed in the future when I get time.

Automatically Split All Trees
If your ancestors knew how many unrelated family trees you had floating around in your genealogy database they might turn over in their graves! These extra trees take up valuable disk space, get in the way, and confuse us, etc. etc. Many of get these extra trees may come from the Family Search library. Some of us have download a thousand individuals onto our floppies and then stuck them into our genealogy database, to float around forever.
These trees are separate family trees, made up of one or more individuals. No one is pointing to them, they are not pointing to anyone else. You probably have one big tree that is your main genealogy database.
GED_Treasure will identify those trees, show you who belongs to them, and then automatically split them off into their own separate files. You will get a report on what the names of those files are.

Name of Tree Report
This is the name of the file that the tree report will be written to. You will also get to view this report right after it has been created.

Enter Cross Reference
Enter the cross reference (i.e., I1) of the INDIVIDUAL that you wish to create a unique GEDCOM file for. This must be the record of an individual, not a family or a source record. I have not tested the results of entering in a family record. NOTE: This value is case- sensitive.

Which Relatives?
Who do you want in your new GEDCOM file? Just your ancestors, just your children and descendants, or everybody? If you choose everybody then all spouses will be included, even though the program allows you to disclude them.

Only Direct Line Spouses?
If you choose all spouses, then the only relatives who will not be saved to the GEDCOM file are your ancestors, if you selected "Only Ancestors", or your descendants if you selected "Only Descendants." All spouses and their children and ancestors will be saved to disk.

Output GEDCOM File
This is the name of the new file that will contain the family tree that is split off. If you want GED_Treasure to automatically split off all the family trees that it finds, then leave this field alone.

This is the number of generations that will be included in the split.

This is not implemented yet. When it is, this will allow you to include a comment in the header of your GEDCOM file.

About The User-Defined Fields
A file is included with GED_Treasure, called RECORD.GRM. This allows users to define what fields they wish to view as they peruse their GEDCOM file. Documentation may come someday if there is any demand on how to do this!
