Telego version 4.1 Manual 04/28/93
OVERVIEW
Telego is a program for IBM compatibles which enables you to play Go or
Gomoku with an opponent at your computer or over the telephone using a
modem. The program allows you to:
* save or recall games from disk
* explore variations as you play through a game
* set clocks for game time and byo yomi
* count the scores
* incrementally save the game to alleviate phone problems
* autodial from a database of players using any com port.
Telego is compatible with the Standard Go Modem Protocol implemented by
Nemesis, Many Faces of Go, and several other programs. The saved games
are readable with Goscribe. Telego can also be used on the Modem To
Modem Lobby on CompuServe and the Modem-to-Modem Games area on Delphi.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This version of Telego was written in Borland C++. Some of the graphics
interface was built using Sun Country Software's 'C' Image Library. The
modem interface utilizes CompuSolve's COMET-MP. Many thanks to Frank
MacConochie and Terry Miller from the Atlanta Go Club and Joel Dehlin,
Mark Rindflesh and John Bernhardt from the Wasatch Go Federation for
their suggestions and help. Have fun!

The following is a detailed description of Telego organized by the main
screens displayed by the program. Items on menus can be selected by clicking
the left mouse button or by holding the <ALT> key down and pressing the
first letter of the menu item. Popup menus with numeric selections don't
require the <ALT> prefix.
After a game has been started, play stones by placing the cursor over the
desired point (using the mouse or the cursor keys) and keying the left mouse
button or the <INSERT> key. The right button or <DELETE> will retract moves
in local mode.
A special function useful for working problems is available for mouse
users in local mode. If you hold both mouse buttons down while the cursor
is on a stone then drag the cursor to a new location and release the mouse
buttons, you can 'slide' a stone to a new board position. Note that the
prisoner count changes when using this function.
STARTUP SCREEN───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
QUIT AND RETURN TO DOS
Select this to exit the program.
SHAREWARE NOTICE
Describes what shareware is and how to register your copy of Telego.
LOCAL
Use this mode to play a game with someone at your computer, look over a
previously played game, or to work through problems.
MODEM
Use this mode to play via modem. After finishing and saving a game in
this mode you can use the local mode to look over your game or try out
variations of moves in the game.
After selecting this you will see a screen asking you to specify the
protocol which you will be using. Your opponent must be using Telego or
a program supporting the Standard Go Modem Protocol such as Nemesis or
Many Faces of Go.
The baud rate for the communications on manually dialed numbers is set
in the SETUPS section. Phone numbers in the directory are dialed at the
rate chosen for the particular entry.
The next screen puts you in an interactive session with your modem. If
you type AT<RETURN> you should see an OK from your modem. If this does
not work you need to change the modem parameters in the SETUPS area. The
following keys are active:
<F1> This answers the phone. Alternatively, you could set the modem
to autoanswer by editing the Initialization string in SETUPS. The
standard command is ATS0=1 to autoanswer after the first ring.
<F2> Use this to disable your Call Waiting, then answer the phone.
You must fill in the proper command string in SETUPS in order for this
to work.
<F3> This displays the phone directory. You can add, edit or delete
players, phone numbers, baud rates and citycodes from the directory
at this point. If you enter a valid ID number Telego will dial that
number at the baud rate shown. You can also manually enter a number
not in the directory. The prefix string selected in the SETUPS section
will be sent at the start of the number. If you fill in the citycode,
Telego will use the automatic logon procedure before dialing the local
phone number. Be sure to update the logon section in SETUPS so it
contains the [*c*] keyword (see SETUPS below).
<F4> Key this after your modem has connected and you are ready to
start the game. Unless you want to transfer a file you would normally
key <F4> as soon as the CONNECT message appears. If one player stays
on this screen and the other keys <F4> you will not be able to
communicate.
<F5> This shows the playing mode selected (Telego or Standard
Protocol) and allows you to change modes without disconnecting.
<F6> After connection you can use this key to transfer files
(including Telego itself) to your opponent. Both xmodem and true
ymodem batch protocols are supported. Ymodem is faster and will
accept file specifications with wildcards (see your DOS manual for
information on wildcards) so you can send multiple files with one
request. Xmodem is better only if the phone connection is noisy.
Both players must select the same protocol.
<F7> This allows you to change the baud rate from the default value
which is selected in SETUPS. You can use it even after connection has
taken place.
<F8> This will toggle the echo of typed characters. This is useful
if you need to interact with a communications service or wish to chat
with your opponent before starting the game.
<F9> This will initiate an automatic logon procedure specified using
information from the SETUPS section of the program. You normally
won't use this, but it is included in case the options available using
<F3> don't meet your requirements.
<F10> Go to a DOS shell. Use this if you need to format a disk or do
some other DOS function, then return to Telego by typing EXIT.
<Esc> Quit and return to the previous menu.
DEFAULTS
All optional parameters for Telego are chosen here.
Select the colors for the graphics by entering the appropriate color
number for each object. Note that the standard board color is number 8
which displays on the Setups screen as dark gray but is a woody color on
the board screens. You can adjust the board color to any of 256 thousand
colors by changing the RGB values (range is 0-63 on each color.)
The Editor and Viewer are used in the RECALL GAME screen to edit or view
game files in their text format. You can enter your favorite editor and
file-viewing utilities to replace the default program names. You must
enter the full pathname and filename unless the path is included in your
autoexec.bat file.
The Autosave interval is the number of moves after which Telego will
resave the ongoing game to disk when you are playing by modem (an
interval of 0 will disable this function).
The Mouse delay is the number of milliseconds which Telego will pause
after a mouse button has been clicked.
You must identify the port which your modem is using. The standard
values for the hardware I/O addresses and interrupts are automatically
selected, but you can change these if needed. If you attempt to use the
modem without identifying the serial port you may run into difficulties
such as no response from the modem or your mouse may 'freeze up'.
Rebooting the system will unfreeze the mouse. The other modem
parameters are: No parity, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit.
The MODEM INITIALIZATION string is sent to the modem when it is first
activated, and the HANGUP string when it is deactivated. Consult your
modem manual for suggestions on other initialization and hangup strings.
The DIALING PREFIX is appended to the front of any phone number. The
[ATDT] will touch-tone dial a number (ATDP will pulse dial) and the
[*70,] will disable Call Waiting. If you don't have Call Waiting you
must not use the [*70,]. The 'DISABLE & ANSWER' string is invoked by
the <F2> key to disable Call Waiting before answering the phone.
The auto logon section is for use with a telecommunication service such
as PCPursuit. The program monitors the incoming messages until one
EXACTLY matches the 'Look for...' message (INCLUDING the case of the
letters) then the program sends the 'Respond with...' message. The first
'Look for' should be left blank.
Prompt the program to stop and get input during the logon by putting a
question mark [?] on a 'Respond with...' line. For example, if you want
to enter an area access code put the following on the appropriate line:
'Area access code?'. Telego will stop the logon to get your code at
this point then resume automatic functioning.
If you put the keyword [*c*] into a Response block Telego will insert
the citycode from the phone directory at that point in the response.
For example, if the citycode is 'UTSLC/24' and the Response block
contains "C D/*c*,USERID" then Telego will actually respond with
"C D/UTSLC/24,USERID". This enables PCPursuit members to use the <F3>
directory dialing to connect without having to use the <F9> auto logon.
HELP This is where you are now.
BOARD SCREENS────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Anything typed on the keyboard is sent to your opponent and appears in
the text display area for messages in the lower left of the screen. You
may want to set the keyboards so one types in upper and the other in
lower case to aid in reading the messages. You can make a visual and
audible signal on your opponent's computer but keying <ctrl-G>. You can
display the current time by hitting <F9>.
Any characters received on the modem while in Telego mode which aren't
part of the command set are displayed in the text box as "√". They are
an indication of a poor phone line connection. You may also see them if
you have just established the modem connection in Telego mode and gone to
the board screen while your opponent is typing from the communications
screen. In this case he will see your typing but each letter will be
preceeded by the letter "T".
INITIAL MENU──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
QUIT
This will return you to the startup screen.
MOUSE DELAY
When this is on a delay equal to the number of milliseconds set in the
DEFAULTS menu is executed each time a mouse button is pressed. If
this is off it is equivalent to having a zero delay.
RECALL GAME
A file selection screen will appear with all files in the current
directory listed. You can use the mouse or the keyboard to identify
the game you wish to recall. Key <Ret> or click the left button on
the highlighted line to select a game. If you are using a mouse and
the cursor is outside either of the boxes click the left button for
paging up and right for paging down. Further instructions are shown
on the screen for changing directories or file specifications. You
can also view <F4>, edit <F5> or rename <F6> a file. Selecting the
double dot (..) on the directory list moves you to the parent of the
current directory.
Telego will read files written in Standard Format (eg, from Goscribe)
but does not support the 'Mark' or 'Diagram' commands so some
information will not be available. After selecting a game in local
mode the board will clear and instructions for continuing the game
will appear. When playing via modem you will be prompted for your
color. The game will then be sent to your opponent and will display
on both boards. If you are using a clock, be sure to select TIMER
SETUP before recalling the game.
BEGIN GAME
This bring up a selection box for determining the handicap. Put the
cursor over the desired handicap and click the left button. Selecting
this means you must play the black stones. Click the right button to
abort.
TIMER SETUP
Prompts you to key in the time limit for the game (in minutes) and the
byo yomi setup. Two types of byo yomi are supported. In one type you
select the number of periods and the length of time for a move. In
the other you select one (1) period of so many seconds and the number
of moves to be made within that period. The second type is not
supported on the modem in Telego mode in versions earlier than 4.0.
NAME GAME
This prompts for the game filename. The default name is 'LASTGAME.GAM'
and the file will be in the same directory which Telego resides. You
can specify a path along with the filename if you want the file stored
in another directory.
ODD OR EVEN
This will generate a random number and notify you and your opponent
whether it is odd or even. Use it on games with no handicap to decide
who chooses the stones first by asking your opponent to type either
'odd' or 'even' then selecting this menu item.
CHANGE BOARDSIZE
This allows you to choose a 19*19, 13*13 or 9*9 board. When playing
by telephone using the Telego mode both players must manually select
the same board size before beginning the game. All saved games will
automatically set the board size.
GAME MENU─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
At the bottom left of the board is a display of the current move number
and the grid coordinates of the cursor when it is on the board. Play a
stone by positioning the cursor near the intersection and clicking the
left mouse button or <Ins>. In local mode the right button or <Del>
will take back the last move. The last move played will be marked with a
dot of the opposite stone color. You can create a PCX file of the
current board by hitting <alt> L. If you have an HP compatible laser
jet printer attached to the LPT1 printer port you will get a printout of
the file. You should change the board color to White if you want to use
this function.
QUIT
This will return you to the startup screen after confirmation via a
selection box at the top of the screen. If you do want to quit put
the cursor over the NO and click the left button.
BEGIN NEW GAME
This will return you to the initial game menu after confirmation via
a selection box at the top of the screen. If you do want to restart
put the cursor over the NO and click the left button.
MODE: PLAYING/VIEWING
This selects the operational mode for the game. PLAYING mode will
create a new game record and is the default mode when BEGINning a
game. VIEWING mode allows you to view an existing game record and is
the default mode when RECALLing a game.
In VIEWING mode click the left mouse button or <Ins> to play the next
move. Click the right button or <Del> to back up a move. At the
left edge of the board is a high speed drawing area. Hold the left
button down while the cursor is in this area to continue the redraw at
high speed and the right button to retract at high speed. Faster
speeds are toward the right of the speed box. <PgDn> and <PgUp> are
available for non-mouse users. When using the speed box COMMENTs and
VARIATIONs are not shown.
ARCHIVE
This will save the game to disk. A prompt will appear the screen
for you to specify a filename for the game. The default name is
'LASTGAME.GAM' unless you had already specified a name from the
NAME GAME function on the Initial menu. You must key a <RETURN> for
the game to be saved. The file format is compatible with Goscribe.
UNDO MOVE
This retracts the last move played.
PASS
Select this to pass your turn.
TIMER
This stops or restarts the local clock and allows you to update the
clock during the game. It is available only if you had selected TIMER
SETUP from the initial menu. When playing via modem a clock status
message is sent to your opponent whenever the clock is turned on or
off. If your game is interrupted be sure to note the times remaining
and remember to select TIMER SETUP before RECALL GAME when starting
up again.
SCORE
Counts the score (Japanese style), taking into account the prisoners
and territory. If all dame have not been filled and all prisoners
have not been removed, a message will appear at the left of the screen
asking you to do so. Fill dame by placing the cursor on the empty
intersection and playing a stone. See the next heading for instruc-
tions on capturing.
KILL
Identify a stone or group to capture by placing the cursor on the
stone and either clicking the left mouse button or <Ins> to capture
the group or the right button or <Del> to kill one stone within a
group. Leave this mode by clicking either button when the cursor is
not on a stone. If you accidently capture a stone or group, select
the UNDO MOVE option to replace it.
VARIATIONS
Select this to explore variations of the game. When selected the menu
item will change. Select SCORE to score the game or KILL to manually
remove stones. RECORD will save any moves played at this level of
variation in the game record then erase the moves on the board for
this variation. ERASE will erase the moves for this variation and
will also erase them from the game record. NEW will move on to the
next variation (really a variation on a variation.) You can save
variations to a depth of 10. You must be completely out of
variations (the VARIATIONS message appears) before you can continue
with the game.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
NUMBERING IS ON/OFF
When numbers are ON all stones played will have the move number on the
stone. This function is useful for copying a game in from a magazine
in which the game is shown in several figures. Numbering is not
available in CGA mode.
WHITE ONLY IS ON/OFF
This selection determines whether the stones played are all White
stones. Non-alternating colors are useful for setting up problems.
BLACK ONLY IS ON/OFF
This selection determines whether the stones played are all Black
stones.
FIND CAPTURES IS ON/OFF
Toggle the automatic capturing feature. If you want to play Gomoku or
Renju turn this off. After two passes in a modem game this is auto-
matically turned off so that you can fill positions in seki prior to
scoring.
ESTIMATE
If you are using a mouse and not using the Standard Protocol this
enables a simple device for counting territory. In order to count the
empty intersections in an area you must enclose the area by holding
the left mouse button down and 'dragging' the cursor. A line will be
drawn on the board following the path of the cursor. When an area is
*completely* bounded by the line, count the territory by releasing the
left button, then clicking the right button within the enclosure. If
you click on a stone of the surrounding group the prisoners within
will be counted. Otherwise the number of empty intersections will be
displayed. Exit this function by pressing both mouse buttons at the
same time. The sum of all enclosed areas will be displayed in the
message box. Estimating is not possible in CGA mode.
RECORD COMMENT
This will start recording any typing to a comment stored with the
game record. Key <F10> to stop recording the comment.
GRID IS ON/OFF
This displays a coordinate grid on the edge of the board. In order to
save space on the screen the 'tens' digit is not shown.
PRINTER ERRORS───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-1 Cannot open file
-2 Cannot allocate memory for line buffers
-4 Print terminated by user
-5 Printer does not acknowledge
-6 Printer is out of paper
-7 Timeout error
PROBLEMS?────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
1. Can't change directories or shell to DOS.
Be sure COMMAND.COM is available on the drive and directory path of
Telego.
2. Not enough memory to retrieve some games.
Try reducing the number of files in the directory. Four hundred
(400) files per directory is the maximum with this version of Telego.
If a game file has more than 1000 lines pull out some comments or
variations using the <F5> editor on the 'Recall Game' screen.
3. Mouse doesn't work.
Be sure the mouse driver is installed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or
CONFIG.SYS file. Just because you have a mouse in Windows does not
mean the mouse driver stays installed for Telego.
4. Screen freezes up and you are locked out.
There may not be enough memory on the video card. The VGA mode
needs at least 256 Kbytes.
5. File (SETUPTG.DAT) for Setups and login menus is faulty.
Delete the file and rerun Telego, then choose DEFAULTS and rewrite
the information. This will ensure a clean starting point for the
information.
If you have some other problem not listed here, or still can't get Telego to
work, I will be glad to help you fix it. Drop me a message on CompuServe
(73740,2530), or write me at: Stephen E. Richard
