===========================================================================
Introduction
===========================================================================
Once upon a time I wrote a program that was (and is) distributed
nationwide. This program, like most, needs to be installed on the
customers' hard drives. I investigated every Job bank that I could
find, and came away convinced that none of them had been done very
well. Under no circumstances could I justify $250, up to $350, for
any of them.
I wrote CONNECT.
CONNECT is a relational database processor for business information.
It was a system designed to categorize businesses by industry, size,
and annual revenues. This package gives the Job hunter and marketer
the competitive edge in selecting a target market using a relational
database processor. The extraction process uses the most convenient
way possible by using option numbers to specify the categories.
The procedure HAD to be configurable quickly and easily and be flexible
enough to allow other regions and cities to utilize the processor
without changes to logic.
A brief list of features includes:
===========================================================================
CONNECT Features
===========================================================================
- Professional look and feel for a better first
impression.
- Comprehensive environment detection, including minimum
CPU, floating point processor, installed RAM, and MS-Dos
version.
- Supports VGA/EGA 50/43 line text modes if detected.
- CONNECT is designed with user friendly Function keys that
allow you to have access to POP-UP HELP screens. Help screens
are available for each Menu panel.
- Allows employers to be selected based on Industry, Size
and Annual Revenues using Relational database techniques.
- Each company may be reviewed by pressing the ENTER key to
move forward or the function key F3 to view a company
previously viewed.
- Printing of selected businesses may be accomplished by placing
an "S" for Select or "D" for Delete in the option field.
This will generate a special queue of businesses to be printed.
Foregoing the selection process will utilize all businesses
chosen using the Relational database selection options.
- Each business has a CONTACT field for the name of the individual
you wish to contact.
- Each company comes equipped with a contact phone number for
employment.
- A Fax phone number field has been provided for each business.
This, when used in conjunction with an INTEL FAX board, is
capable of faxing memos to selected businesses.
- Each company maintains data fields for the number of people
currently employed and the Gross Annual revenues generated
for the previous year.
- Each company has a four line brief description of the functions
they provide.
- A Note screen is available for every business in the data
bank. The DOS operating system date is extracted in
preparation for the current note. A maximum of four notes
may be kept for each business.
- 3D bar charts are used to pictorially depict the number of
businesses in each Industry, Size category and Annual Revenues
category.
- Additions, modifications, and deletions may be made to the
Job bank database.
- A separate relational database is maintained for personal
addresses.
- A bare-bones text editor is provided to allow you to write a
memo or resume that may be mail merged with selected businesses
from the Job bank. If a more advanced text processor is needed,
CONNECT allows you to shell out of the package into another
text editor. Upon termination of the text editor, control is
passed back to the CONNECT package.

- Several print formats are available:
1) You may print envelopes with your Return address and selected
business addresses.
2) You may make mailing labels for selected businesses.
3) You may print mail merged memos for selected businesses.
4) You may print a report of all selected businesses.
- Any selected print format may be sorted in ascending or
descending order by company name, city, state, or zip code.
You may specify primary and secondary sort fields.
- A generic title or department may be merged with all selected
business addresses.
- Robust error handling, including a custom critical error
handler that won't scare the dickens out of you.

Installation
===========================================================================
The installation procedure for CONNECT was designed to install CONNECT
and all associated files. The installation procedure will install the
CONNECT package on the C drive under the directory BUSINESS\DIRECTOR. A
subdirectory will be created called RESUME. This directory will contain
some sample resumes to be used with CONNECT. You may model your own
resume after the sample prototypes. The installation has been designed
so that you may change the installation default directories to whatever
you wish. In order to install the CONNECT package type INSTALL and
follow the instructions.
===========================================================================
Program Requirements (Programmer)
===========================================================================
1. MS-Dos 3.0 or higher.
2. IBM PC BIOS compatible MS-Dos computer with at least 200k free RAM.
3. Standard CGA or Hercules compatible video subsystem.
===========================================================================
Program Requirements (User)
===========================================================================
1. MS-DOS 3.0 or higher.
2. IBM PC BIOS-compatible MS-DOS computer with 200k free RAM
3. Standard CGA or Hercules compatible video subsystem.
===========================================================================
Distribution Files
===========================================================================
CONNECT comes distributed with the following files:
LEGEND: city - the name of the city you ordered.
city.BAT - the BATCH file that processes the city you ordered.
CONNECT.EXE - the executable (relational database)
CONNECT.MSK - mask library for screen interface
city.* - a number of files used in the relational database
processing.
CONNECT.MAN - this reference manual
ORDER.DOC - order form
README.DOC - quick hello
WHATS.NEW - updates and enhancements made to CONNECT.

===========================================================================
Registration
===========================================================================
Upon receipt of the registration price of $10.00 (U.S. funds only) you
will be sent a disk with the most current version that will enable you
to use the package without displaying my shareware notice. Use
the file "order.doc" to order. Sorry, MC/Visa not accepted.
===========================================================================
Shareware License
===========================================================================
You are free to distribute shareware copies of CONNECT provided
that none of the included files are modified or removed, and provided
that no additional files are included in the archive. Modifying the
archive format (from .zip to some other format perhaps more
convenient) is permitted.
===========================================================================
Shareware Warranty
===========================================================================
The shareware version of CONNECT is guaranteed to take up disk
space. The author of this product is more than happy to hear about any
bugs or unexpected behavior through non-voice channels (netmail, US
Postal Service, or logging on to the CONNECT/Soft BBS), but will not
guarantee that immediate bug fixes will be forthcoming.
===========================================================================
Registered License
===========================================================================
You are free to make unlimited backup copies of this program for
archival purposes. You may not distribute copies of this program
except under the following provisions: You may at your choosing give
away or sell your program with its accompanying files to ONE party,
provided you destroy all copies of the software in your possession
after the time of the transaction. The copies of the program that are
used to install your applications MUST NOT be distributed with the key
that enables modifications.
Pursuant to United States copyright laws and international copyright
agreements, CONNECT must be treated as if it were a book. Just
as two people cannot read a book in front of separate computers, two
people must not simultaneously use the same registered copy of
CONNECT. The sole purpose of archival copies of CONNECT is
to be for protection against hardware or diskette failure.

===========================================================================
Registered Warranty
===========================================================================
The registered version (original copy) is warranted to meet in all key
aspects its defined behavior as listed in the documentation. Key
aspects are those features without which the program will fail in some
gross manner to perform as desired. Minor specifications (such
as prompt lengths, etc.) are subject to change without notice. The
final arbiter as to the interpretation of the documentation shall be
the author of the program. The sole remedy available to the purchaser
of CONNECT shall be bug fixes or a refund, as determined by the
author. Work-arounds (eg syntax modifications) for the purposes of
warranty consideration will be considered acceptable if they make
possible the same task that any bug renders impossible. If verified
bugs are not corrected within 30 days of notification, and if the
purchaser is working in good faith to keep in contact with the author,
the purchaser at his option is entitled to a refund. Verified bugs are
those which the author is able to duplicate on machines that fall
within the equipment requirements list.
Upgraded versions of CONNECT will be handled in a slightly
different fashion. Unless demonstrated otherwise, it is assumed by
the author that free upgrades obtained by the purchaser are so
obtained as a matter of the purchaser's convenience, and it is thus
assumed that the original, purchased copy of CONNECT is not
defective. It is further assumed that if a bug is discovered in a
free upgrade, the purchaser is still able to use his older version of
CONNECT. Therefore, unresolved bugs found in a free upgrade of
CONNECT are not subject to a refund of monies paid should such
bugs remain unresolved after 30 days. Any bugs found should still be
reported to the author, as he will give all bug reports due attention
in his attempts to resolve them.
There is one exception to this previous provision. If the author
represents an upgrade as a fix to a bug reported by the purchaser,
then the full original warranty shall be extended to cover the
upgrade.
===========================================================================
Registered Support
===========================================================================
The registered version entitles the purchaser to unlimited support via
netmail, the CONNECT/Soft BBS or via US Mail. I am unable, however, to
provide telephone support.

===========================================================================
Frankness Clause
===========================================================================
As you well know, it's darned difficult to get a publisher to stand
behind his product. He usually guarantees the diskette (what a joke)
and hangs you out to dry. If there is an error in the program, I will
do anything possible to correct it in a timely fashion. I am also
very interested in any ambiguities or errors in this documentation.
Whatever problems you do find, I would appreciate a note.
===========================================================================
Disclaimer
===========================================================================
While every effort has been made by the author to ensure the fitness
for use and integrity of CONNECT, the author cannot and will not
accept responsibility for any damage, physical or otherwise, to any
equipment owned by the purchaser. The author habitually recommends
that all customers back up their data regularly and frequently; that
recommendation applies here as well. The maximum remedy available to
the purchaser in the event of any type of dispute is the purchase cost
of the software.
===========================================================================
About the Autoexec.bat file
===========================================================================
Since the CONNECT Business Information Retrieval System is installed
under a directory called BUSINESS\DIRECTOR, you may want to modify your
Autoexec.bat file so that the operating system is able to execute
the program without having to be under the directory. In order to
do this, you may modify your path command by concatenating the directory
BUSINESS\DIRECTOR at the end of the PATH command. Remember to separate
the last directory with a semicolon. If you do not intend to use this
package frequently, it is advisable to forego modification of the
Autoexec.bat file since the PATH command is limited to 127 characters
and every additional path search decreases overall performance of the
system.

Contacting the Author
===========================================================================
If you have any questions concerning the workings of this product
you may contact me at the following mailing address:
JOHN S. WARD
CONNECT/Soft Publishing Co.

Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083
United States of America
Any response sent to this address will receive a prompt response.
The following steps will greatly aid technical support and speed of
problem resolution:
1. If a specific feature is not working as expected, does your
usage of the feature comply with its description in the
appropriate section of the documentation?
2. To avoid my needing to resort to guesswork, send a facsimile
of the screen and feature that is not working for you with your
question.
3. If logging onto the CONNECT/Soft On-line for technical support,
prepare your message in advance. The Message Menu of the BBS
has an Upload feature that will allow you to upload your
message with most any protocol. This will greatly reduce
connect time and increase accuracy. Be sure to include screen
prints and any errors as part of the message, or as its own
message.
4. Be sure to indicate exactly which error messages, if any, are
accompanying unexpected behavior.
===========================================================================
Upgrade Policy
===========================================================================
Purchasers of CONNECT will be entitled to free upgrades for three years.
This includes not only software upgrades but modifications as well to
the city data base. Upgrades will only be supplied to the particular
city purchased. Connect Soft/Publishing company maintains an online
database of registered users which includes the purchaser's name,
address, date purchased, and the name of the city bank purchased.
I will notify you of the first significant upgrade of CONNECT after
registration, and I keep the current registered version of CONNECT
available for download in the 'Registered User' file section of the
CONNECT/Soft On-line.

===========================================================================
Accessing the Job Bank using CONNECT
===========================================================================
CONNECT/SOFT Publishing Co. maintains a business database for 18
metropolitan cities or regions. They are as follows:
ATLANTA
BOSTON
DALLAS FORT WORTH TEXAS
DENVER
DETROIT
FLORIDA
HOUSTON
LOS ANGELES
MINNEAPOLIS ST. PAUL
NEW YORK
OHIO
PHILADELPHIA
PHOENIX
SAINT LOUIS
SAN FRANCISCO
SEATTLE
WASHINGTON D.C.
CANADA
These data bases are used by those seeking employment as well as market
research firms. Since the database for each city is a separate
relational database, combinations of different selection criteria
may be used to form subsets of companies you wish to work with.
Once you have successfully installed your cities' business database
system using the default installation options, your cursor will be left
under the directory C:\BUSINESS\DIRECTOR>. At this point you would type
the name of the city you have ordered. If you ordered the Data Bank
for NEW YORK, you would type NEW YORK at the prompt.
For example:
C:\BUSINESS\DIRECTOR>NEW YORK
The city name will invoke a batch processor which in turn will pass the
name of your city to the CONNECT database system. The CONNECT package
will then formulate the relational database file-names used for your city.
Since the relational database file-names are unique for each city, you
can install different city databases on the same drive and directory
without any conflict. The database program and graphics programs
will simply be updated.
The first screen that will appear upon invoking the CONNECT database
is a banner screen containing the name of the city and state followed
by the year the business directory was updated. At this point you
may press return to continue to the next screen.

used to type the name of a person you wish to contact. After selecting
businesses from the various categories, there may be some you do not
wish to be on your mailing list. To delete the companies from the
mailing list, type the letter "D" in the option field. This will not
delete the company from the database. The company name and its
associated information will be suppressed when a print is initiated.

If you wish to ignore the selection categories, you may do so by
typing the name of the company in the COMPANY NAME field and press
return until it is found. The name is retrieved from the database.
All previously selected categories will be negated. The individually
selected companies may be placed in a special print queue by typing
the letter "S" in the OPTION field. The special queue may be reviewed
many times using the letters "S" (Select) and "D" (Delete) to add to
the print queue or suppress printing. If you use the selection
categories, you do not have to use the letters "S" to select company
names.
If you wish to make a notation concerning a particular company, feel
free to make use of Function key 4 "F4". Connect will extract the
current date from the operating system. You may use up to three
lines of information for notes taken in a single day. Additional
notes may be taken at latter dates. Notes such as last contact and
future appointments may be stored in these fields. Since you have
four different date fields for the Note panel, no more than four
days worth of notes may be stored at any one time. Once the limit of
four notes has been reached, each successive note stored will cause the
earliest note to vanish.
Note: The Review screen allows you to view a previously selected
company when pressing Function Key 3 "F3".
Once all of the selected addresses have been reviewed or upon pressing
the Function Key 2 "F2", the CONNECT software will return you to the

Error Messages
===========================================================================
The following are the standard error messages built into Connect.
The nature of these errors is such that Connect cannot continue,
so these error messages can probably be classified as Fatal Errors.
Of course, the message the user sees doesn't include the word 'Fatal'
for obvious reasons.
Any application should be distributed with manual installation
instructions to help alleviate the unexpected, hence the wordage of
the error message. The documentation that you provide your users
should include a telephone number in case of installation
difficulties, or in case manual procedures also didn't succeed.

Miscellaneous Errors
==========================================================================
DOS version 3.0 or higher required
A DOS version prior to 3.0 was detected. Connect requires
MS-DOS 3.0 or later.
Memory allocation error
A request for more memory was denied. This is extremely
unlikely to occur, as Connect requires under 200k of free
RAM.
===========================================================================
Critical Hardware Errors
===========================================================================
Should a disk door be left open (or any other critical error trapped
by DOS, for that matter) a Critical Error handler built into
Connect will take control and provide the user with a menu similar
to this one:
/ ==========[DOS Critical Error]========= \
|| ||
|| [Abort] [Retry] [Ignore] [Fail] ||
|| ||
\ ======================================= /
If the user accepts retry, he will be in most cases safe. Of course,
if his computer picked the exact moment that he's installing your
application to crash its hard drive, no Critical Error handler is
going to recover very gracefully.

Registration
===========================================================================
This section deals only with registered copies of Connect.
Shareware versions have no distribution protection built in
whatsoever.
With your registered Connect diskette you received the latest version
without the shareware notice on the Banner screen. Remember,
registered updates are good for only that city for which you ordered.
Since the same software is used for each cities' database, software
upgrades will be the same for every city. Data bank upgrades will be
available only for the city that was ordered.
This protects my product, as well as protects your installation from
unwanted tampering.

The Ten Commandments
==========================================================================
EXODUS 20
20 THEN GOD ISSUED this edict:
"I am Jehovah your God who liberated you from your slavery in Egypt.
"You may worship no other god than me.
"You shall not make yourselves any idols: any images resembling
animals, birds, or fish. You must never bow to an image or worship it in
any way; for I, the Lord your God, am very possessive. I will not share
your affection with any other god!
"And when I punish people for their sins, the punishment continues
upon the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those who
hate me; but I lavish my love upon thousands of those who love me and
obey my commandments.
"You shall not use the name of Jehovah your God irreverently, nor
use it to swear to a falsehood. You will not escape punishment if you
do.
"Remember to observe the Sabbath as a holy day. Six days a week are
for your daily duties and your regular work, but the seventh day is a
day of Sabbath rest before the lord your God. On that day you are to do
no work of any kind, nor shall your son, daughter, or slaves-whether men
or women-or your cattle or your house guests. For in six days the Lord
made the heaven, earth, and sea, and everything in them, and rested the
seventh day; so he blessed the Sabbath day and set it aside for rest.
"Honor your father and mother, that you may have a long, good life
in the land the Lord your God will give you.
"You must not murder.
"You must not commit adultery.
"You must not steal.
"You must not lie.
"You must not be envious of your neighbor's house, or want to sleep
with his wife, or want to own his slaves, oxen, donkeys, or anything else
he has."
The above passages were taken from "THE LIVING BIBLE PARAPHRASED".
These are the words spoken by God "Jehovah" and given to Moses on
Mt. Sinai. They are to be obeyed.
