  18.   In order to install Paradox for Windows, you must have a computer
  19.   with a 386 or 486 processor, at least 4MB of memory, 20MB of free
  20.   disk space, and Microsoft Windows version 3.1.  If you are unable
  21.   to install Paradox onto a system that meets these requirements,
  22.   the program may be running into a conflict with the system.  If
  23.   you are having difficulty installing Paradox on a drive other
  24.   than the drive where Windows is installed, you should also
  25.   investigate issues like hard disk space which is discussed below.

  27.                            HARD DISK SPACE
  28.  
  29.   For optimal Windows performance, approximately 3MB of free disk
  30.   space should be available on the drive where Windows resides.  If
  31.   the amount of free disk space decreases to less than 2.5MB,
  32.   problems may occur when installing Paradox.  Files are written to
  33.   Window's SYSTEM subdirectory (refer to the README.TXT file on the
  34.   first Paradox disk for list of files) and space is needed for
  35.   temporary files.  If you are installing Paradox onto a drive
  36.   other than the drive where Windows is installed, you must verify
  37.   that there is sufficient disk space for files on both drives (at
  38.   least 3MB free on the Windows drive, and approximately 20MB on
  39.   the drive where Paradox will be installed - for all options).
  40.  
  41.   Errors on the hard drive can be responsible for installation
  42.   failure.  Errors should be repaired using an appropriate data
  43.   recovery tool.  Ensure that the installation program is not
  44.   running into problems on your hard disk by running a utility such
  45.   as CHKDSK (Exit Windows and type CHKDSK at the DOS prompt).
  46.   Refer to your DOS manual for information regarding CHKDSK.

  48.   NOTE: If you are using a hard disk compression program such as
  49.   Stacker, hard disk space may be incorrectly evaluated.
  50.   Compression programs assume a particular ratio of compression
  51.   (e.g., 2 to 1), which is not appropriate for some file types that
  52.   do not compress as much.  To avoid insufficient disk space
  53.   problems, assume that your hard disk has a third less disk space
  54.   when installing.

  84.                      EARLY INSTALLATION FAILURE

  86.   If the install program fails before the first screen appears,
  87.   and/or an error referring to "LZEXPAND" occurs, a file
  88.   (LZEXPAND.DLL) that Windows relies on may be corrupted or
  89.   missing.  By following the procedure below, you can install
  90.   Paradox without the use of this file.

  93.      1.  Copy PDOXINST.LZ from your first Paradox disk to the
  94.          directory where Windows resides (e.g.., C:\WINDOWS).
  95.  
  96.             COPY A:\PDOXINST.LZ C:\WINDOWS
  97.  
  98.      2.  Make your Windows directory current (CD C:\WINDOWS) and
  99.          type:
  100.  
  101.             EXPAND PDOXINST.LZ PDOXINST.EXE
  102.  
  103.          This command will unpack the Paradox installation program
  104.          so that you can run it manually.
  105.  
  106.      3.  Load Windows.  Select File | Run from the Program
  107.          Manager's menu, and type on the Command Line input line:
  108.  
  109.             C:\WINDOWS\PDOXINST.EXE
  110.  
  111.   At this point the installation program should be running.  If the
  112.   installation is successful, you can delete PDOXINST.EXE from your
  113.   Windows directory (e.g.., DEL C:\WINDOWS\PDOXINST.EXE).

  115.                         SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
  116.  
  117.   At times, conflicts with memory resident software and device
  118.   drivers (e.g., expanded memory managers, menu utilities, CD ROM
  119.   drivers etc.) can prevent the installation program from executing
  120.   successfully.  To rule out the possibility of conflicts such as
  121.   these, you should simplify your system configuration.  To install
  122.   Paradox, try Example 1 shown below, and if necessary, try Example
  123.   2.

  153.   In order to simplify the system, disable all lines in your
  154.   AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files (by typing REM before each
  155.   line) that are not necessary for your system to boot and for
  156.   Microsoft Windows to run.  If this procedure is new to you,
  157.   please refer to Tech Info sheet #1180 and to Microsoft's
  158.   publication "Getting Started with Microsoft Windows."  It is
  159.   recommended that you copy your unmodified AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  160.   CONFIG.SYS files onto a bootable floppy disk.

  162.   A simplified AUTOEXEC.BAT should contain the following lines (it
  163.   is assumed that Windows is installed in C:\WINDOWS and that you
  164.   wish to install Paradox into the directory C:\PDOXWIN).  Note
  165.   that the PATH specifies drive letters for each directory.  This
  166.   syntax is necessary for certain Windows procedures.

  172.   Note: The SET TEMP command must point to a valid directory.

  184.   Reboot your computer, start Windows in Standard Mode (type WIN /S
  185.   at the DOS prompt), and try reinstalling Paradox.  Provided
  186.   Paradox installs properly, you may add lines from your old
  187.   AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.  Remember to add the DOS
  188.   command SHARE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT.  If you are still unable to
  189.   install Paradox, use Example 2 to complete installation.

  219.   Exit the installation program (or reboot your computer).  If this
  220.   is the first time you have installed Paradox, exit Windows, skip
  221.   the following four steps, and perform the DOS commands shown in
  222.   Table 1 below.

  224.   If you previously installed Paradox, exit Windows and perform
  225.   these four additional steps to ensure that all files from your
  226.   previous installation are removed.  This procedure will ensure
  227.   that old files (that may be corrupted) are replaced with new
  228.   files.

  230.      1.  Copy any personal files (i.e., your data files) to a
  231.          different directory or floppy disk.

  233.      2.  Delete the following files (if they are present) from the
  234.          Windows System directory (e.g.., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM):

  305.   files.  Delete the files that you copied to the INSTALL directory
  306.   and remove the INSTALL directory itself, with the following DOS
