PRODUCT : Paradox for Windows NUMBER : 1252
VERSION : 1.0
OS : WIN
DATE : April 23, 1993 PAGE : 1/3
TITLE : Troubleshooting Font Mismatches and Video Display
Problems
Intended Audience:
This is intended for all Paradox for Windows users.
Prerequisites:
You should have a general grasp of how to install fonts, and how
to edit your WIN.INI file.
Purpose of the TI:
To assist you in determining system mis-matches with fonts and
video drivers.
Paradox for Windows was tested against a very wide variety of
display systems, and every effort was made to prevent display
problems. However, not all video and font manufacturers comply
with the same set of standards, and their products are not always
implemented as they were originally intended. Therefore, Paradox
for Windows may cause hidden problems to surface in some
manufacturer's display software.
Here are the first steps to follow when troubleshooting display
problems in Paradox for Windows.
General Screen Problems
(missing design elements, overlapping objects, generally odd
placement of objects)
1. Does the problem persist if you change the windows display
setting to Standard VGA, or another Microsoft-supplied
screen driver?
2. If 1 solves the problem, make absolutely sure you have the
latest display driver software available for your display
card/system.
The problem is now in the hands of your display card vendor. (In
some cases the latest version of the driver software is worse
than older versions!)

Font Problems
(Odd sized or garbled text elements in dialog boxes and status
lines)
1. Make sure you have a section in your WIN.INI file labeled
[FontSubstitutes]. If this section does not appear in
your WIN.INI file, add one using any text editor (Notepad,
Sysedit, etc.). Try an entry such as:
[FontSubstitutes]
Helv=MS Sans Serif
Tms Rmn=MS Serif
Times=Times New Roman
Helvetica=Arial
2. Change the current printer to see if the problem persists
across printer types.
3. True Type should be enabled.
4. "Show Only True Type Fonts in Applications" should NOT be
used.
5. Adobe Type Manager Users:
- Use version 2.5 (or greater) if at all possible.
- Generic/Text-Only printing is not possible when
earlier versions are active.
- 2.5 is faster
- HP LaserJet 4 and other printers with resolutions
higher than 300 dpi require the newer ATM version.
6. Bitstream Facelift Users:
- FaceLift fails with Paradox for Windows if FaceLift
is set to Disabled.
- If you must use FaceLift fonts, but Paradox seems
to disagree with the FaceLift system, you should
consider having your current fonts converted to
True Type or Type 1. The Type 1 fonts can then be
used with ATM.
