TITLE : General Questions About Paradox for Windows
System Requirements
1. What are the system requirements for Paradox for Windows?
The minimum system requirements for Paradox for Windows are:
- An 80386 or higher microprocessor
- 4 MB of memory. We recommend 6 MB or more. Performance
will increase with more memory.
- A hard disk with at least 20 MB of free disk space to
install Paradox for Windows and use it effectively.
- An EGA or higher video card
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later (version 3.0 is not
supported)
- A mouse is strongly recommended, but not required. Some
design features can be accessed only by a mouse.
- A network is not required, but Paradox supports the
following networks: Novell Advanced Netware, 3COM
3Plus/3Plus Open, Microsoft LAN Manager, and any network
that is 100% Windows compatible. For a list of supported
networks, view the NETWORKS.WRI file in the WINDOWS
directory.
Compatibility Questions About Paradox for Windows
Paradox 3.5 and Reflex Compatibility Questions
1. Can I use my Paradox 3.5 and 4.0 tables with Paradox for
Windows?
Yes. Paradox for Windows will read these files without
importing.
2. Can my Paradox 3.5 or 4.0 forms and reports be used in
Paradox for Windows?
The Paradox for Windows Forms & Reports Generators are
designed to fully take advantage of the Windows environment.
Consequently, the Paradox for DOS forms and reports cannot be
used by Paradox for Windows. You can use Paradox 3.5 and 4.0
tables in Paradox for Windows and then create Paradox for
Windows forms and reports.

3. Can Paradox 3.5 read Paradox for Windows tables?
Paradox 3.5 cannot use Paradox for Windows or Paradox 4.0
tables, but these tables can be translated to the Paradox 3.5
format by either Paradox for Windows or Paradox 4.0.
4. Can Paradox for Windows read Reflex files?
You must translate your data from Reflex to a Paradox file or
an ASCII file and then read it into Paradox for Windows.
Paradox 4.0 Compatibility Questions
1. Will my Paradox 4.0 PAL applications work with Paradox for
Windows?
Paradox for Windows will launch Paradox 4.0 applications from
an icon that you can create on your desktop. This gives you
a smooth migration process. You will need to have Paradox
4.0 or Paradox 4.0 Runtime in addition to Paradox for Windows
to launch these applications from Paradox for Windows.
2. Can I view/edit a Paradox 4.0 table in Paradox for Windows
and in Paradox 4.0 at the same time?
Yes, Paradox for Windows is fully compatible with and can
perform concurrent editing with Paradox 4.0. You will need
to have the latest version of Paradox 4.0 to accomplish this.
3. I have Paradox 4.0 Runtime. Will I have to get a different
version of Paradox Runtime to run Paradox for Windows
applications?
Yes, Paradox for Windows has its own programming language
and runs only under the Windows environment. Note: You do
not need a copy of Runtime to actually run your applications.
Runtime is needed if your users want to run your application
and do not own Paradox for Windows.

4. Will my Paradox 4.0 scripts transfer over to Paradox for
Windows?
Paradox for Windows is an Object-based programming language.
The interface of designing applications (dialog boxes,
buttons) is already done for you. This alleviates 70% of the
code required for our DOS products. Therefore, the Paradox
4.0 scripts will not transfer.
5. Are Paradox for Windows files downwardly compatible?
Paradox 3.5 cannot use Paradox for Windows or Paradox 4.0
tables, but these tables can be translated to the Paradox 3.5
format by either Paradox for Windows or Paradox 4.0.
dBASE/FoxPro and rBase Questions
1. Can I translate my dBASE III+ application into Paradox for
Windows?
All your dBASE data can be used by Paradox for Windows as one
of its native formats. The *.PRG file formats use a
different language approach and cannot be translated into
Paradox for Windows.
2. Can I transfer my dBASE III+ and dBASE IV data into Paradox
for Windows data?
Yes, you can use the Paradox for Windows copy or query
features to transfer your data. See the answer to the
previous question.
3. Can Paradox for Windows use dBASE, FoxPro and Clipper
indexes?
Only indexes that follow dBASE's standard indexing can be
used by Paradox for Windows. FoxPro's and Clipper's
proprietary index formats do not follow this standard.
4. Can Paradox for Windows read rBase files?
Yes, provided that the rBase files are first exported to a
dBASE file format.

Paradox for Windows can read ObjectVision 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1
data.
2. Can ObjectVision access Paradox for Windows data?
ObjectVision Pro 2.1 is required to read Paradox for Windows
data. Paradox for Windows can read ObjectVision 1.0 and 2.0
data.
OS/2 Questions
1. Does Paradox for Windows run under OS/2 2.0?
Paradox for Windows will not run under OS/2 2.0 because this
version of OS/2 supports Windows 3.0 applications only.
Paradox for Windows must be used with Windows 3.1.
Questions About Networks
1. Can I run Paradox 4.0 and Paradox for Windows on a network at
the same time?
Yes. Paradox 4.0 and Paradox for Windows can work on a
network simultaneously. You will need the most recent
version of Paradox 4.0 to accomplish this. Paradox for
Windows supports Paradox 4.0 file locking protocol which
allows them to share data concurrently. For additional
information on Table Formats and Network Protocols, order
Technical Information Sheet 1249 from TechFAX (800-822-4269).

4. Can I do a mail merge and use standard paragraphs in Paradox
for Windows? Would I need to use another software package to
print this out?
Mail merge and standard paragraphs can be generated by
Paradox for Windows. Implementing standard paragraphs would
require a multi-table solution so that you could link in the
appropriate paragraph from a standard table when outputting
your report.
You would not need to use another software package for font
control. Paradox for Windows provides sufficient font
control.
5. Would it be faster to develop my application in C than in
Paradox for Windows? What are the advantages to Paradox for
Windows?
C is a lower level language than ObjectPAL making C more
flexible than Paradox for Windows. However, Paradox for
Windows Object-based language is quicker when developing end
products.
6. Is there an Application Workshop in Paradox for Windows?
No.
7. Can you link DLLs into Paradox for Windows?
Yes, you can write your own DLL's in the language of your
choice and use them in ObjectPAL.
8. Is there a Runtime version for Paradox for Windows?
Paradox for Windows Runtime version will be available in
1993.
9. How many indexes can I create on a Paradox for Windows file?
Can I use them to order the table?
The amount of indexes created in Paradox for Windows is
