Open Letter to Developers of Commercial RDDs
From Bruce B. Wilson, Author of xDot
18 Hartley Woods Dr
Kennesaw, GA 30144
(404) 516-5140
To all Developers of Commercial RDDs:
xDot can be easily modified to support any RDD. An RDDSYS.prg is
included in the Developer's version containing the source to XD_RDDINFO().
This function is contains information needed by xDot when performing
RDD-specific tasks. This capability and the outstanding features of xDot
make it quite a valuable tool to have.
All Programmers have their favorite "back-door" to their databases.
Some like DBU, FoxPro, dBase IV, etc. Usually, products like these
will only support the RDD that each is written for. So...if you are to
create your own RDD, you may have a hard time obtaining a "back-door"
to easily manage your database environment.
Here's where xDot comes in. xDot will be your "back-door".
xDot will make your product more valuable to the end user because you now
have a ready-made "support tool" available. xDot's flexible Interpreter
gives it a clear advantage over other products in use which contain
only an interface.
My initial goal is to expose as many people to xDot as possible.
By distributing a copy of xDot with your package, you make your
product more valuable by providing an Integrated-Development Environment
supporting your RDD which makes it more productive to use.
The type of xDot you distribute with your product is variable:
Through individual agreements:
1) I will allow you to "bundle" a non-demo user's version xDot disk
containing only your RDD in your product for an economical price.
2) I will swap demo disks with you: Any xDot I sell will include
your demo disk, any product you sell will include my xDot Demo disk.
3) I will prepare a special demo version of xDot with only your
RDD in it and allow you to add the file(s) to your distribution disk.
If none of these appeal, I would at least like to swap a developer's
copy of xDot for your package. I will add any RDD-specific support and
any special linking information for your RDD to the xDot documentation.
Also, if you would like to be an "authorized dealer", please send
me a profile of your company and a written request.
I've spent an enormous amount of time developing, testing and rewriting
this product. I personally feel this product will be a great success.
Sincerely,
Bruce B. Wilson
