  12. Public Access is a Time/Use/Billing Control Front-End Shell for libraries
  13. or public or private community resource business that rents their computer
  14. resources to casual off-the-street customers (general public).
  15.  
  16. In the past, computer resource rentals had been primarily aimed at word
  17. processing and desktop publishing for letter and resume writing.  These
  18. businesses handled customer charges manually over the counter with counter
  19. personnel.
  20.  
  21. PUBLIC ACCESS elevates the whole environment to a completely new level
  22.  
  23. With PUBLIC ACCESS, for the first time, the local library, Copy Center
  24. or what have you, can offer their customer access to online communications
  25. as well as any application for information access and processing, all under
  26. one controlled environment.  Comes with more than 200 phone numbers and a
  27. demo logon password for PRODIGY (r).

  29. Additionally, the site can offer the customer the opportunity to pay by CASH
  30. or CREDIT CARD. All Credit Card transactions are verified before proceeding.

  32. INSTALLATION...
  33.  
  34. A. OPTION 1. Archived File On 5.25" Floppy
  35.  
  36.    To unarchive PUBLIC ACCESS copy the PACCSXXA.EXE and PACCSXXB.EXE files from
  37.    floppy to any desired hard disk directory.  These two files are self
  38.    extracting files.  Now type
  39.  
  40.          PACCS20A <CR> and then when completed, type..
  41.          PACCS20B <CR>
  42.  
  43.    to self extract PUBLIC ACCESS.  The self extracting file will prompt you at
  44.    the beginning, confirming your wish to self extract.
  45.  
  46. B. OPTION 2. Self Installing 3.5" Floppy
  47.  
  48.    Put the 3.5" distribution disk in drive A: or B: and type 'INSTALL' at the
  49.    system prompt for that floppy.
  50.

  53. Requires 1.5 megebytes of hard disk disk space and does NOT alter any of your
  54. system setup (Config.SYS of Autoexec.BAT) files.  The person installing
  55. PUBLIC ACCESS must make alternations to the Autoexec.bat file before running
  56. PUBLIC ACCESS.  See below for instructions.

  58. This version of PUBLIC ACCESS requires Datastorm's PCPLUS (r) V2.01 for the
  59. bulk of its text communications.  PCPLUS was the only terminal communications
  60. program on the market offering the required features in its script language.
  61. As other terminal communication programs develop adequate control features
  62. for their script languages I will add drivers for those terminal programs.

  69. To run PUBLIC ACCESS you must first SET two environment variables.
  70. The variables tell PUBLIC ACCESS where it can find itself.
  71.  
  72. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file with any text editor or word processor
  73. (in non-document/text mode) by placing the following two lines in
  74. your file.
  75.  
  76.       SET PACP={Drive:\Path\Dir}  Example 'C:\PA'
  77.  
  78. If you install PUBLIC ACCESS on a hard drive other than 'C:' then you must
  79. also enter the the following command.
  80.  
  81.      SET PACD={Drive:}            Example 'D:'
  82.  
  83. Note: You can also enter the above commands directly at the system prompt
  84. command line without rebooting your computer.
  85.  
  86. When your environment is set, change to that directory and type:
  87.  
  88.      'PAC' then ENTER to start PUBLIC ACCESS
  89.  
  90. PUBLIC ACCESS will start up and take you through several setup and
  91. configuration steps, first with general system questions then secondly with
  92. specific system questions.  All the fields in the Setup/Configuration screen
  93. must be filled in with valid information.  Otherwise, you can not proceed.

  95. When you are finished with this step, just press ESC, F7 or Page UP to arrive
  96. at the systems Main Menu.
