^C^1The Print Utility
^Cby
^CGary M. Simpson, Sr.
This handy little utility lets you print documents in a neatly-formatted
manner. Say you've got a big text file, with no margins or page breaks, and
wish to print it out. If you just dump it to the printer, it will come out as a
long block of text without any margins, breaks, or page numbers. That's what
The Print Utility is for; it will output a formatted document to your printer.
After the title screen, The Print Utility gives you a menu of parameters and
options. Use the arrow keys to move around on the screen (if they don't seem to
work, try pressing Num Lock to get into cursor movement mode rather than numeric
keypad mode), and press ENTER to change an item. Yes/No items toggle when you
press ENTER, while others put the cursor in the item's space for you to type in
a new value. Since some of the items are interrelated, other values might
switch when you change one; for instance, turning Reformatting off resets the
Page Width parameter since the width of lines in the original document is
preserved unchanged in this case.
Things you can set include whether to output page numbers or not, whether to
reformat text (putting text within given margins and re-word-wrapping where
necessary, as opposed to preserving lines as given in the original file),
justify text (inserting spaces throughout lines to make the right margins even
rather than ragged), and the page size (66 lines for most printers, but it may
vary, particularly in the case of laser printers). Note that "Page Size" is the
physical form length of your printer, as distinct from the "Lines Per Page"
parameter, which controls how many text lines to output before feeding to the
next page. When you're ready to print, move to the lower right item and press
ENTER.
