  1. We are using the Fast Track method of dyeing so leave the containers to sit for half

  3. an hour to allow the dye to find the dyesites on the fibre molecules. While you are

  5. waiting, dilute the soda ash in very hot water. Choose an amount of water that can

  7. be easily divided by six and will not overfill your containers. Again the amount of 
  8. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  9. liquid isn't as important as the amount of soda ash (see 'Basic Dye Recipe'). Once the 
  10. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  11. soda ash is dissolved and your half an hour is up, pour an equal amount of diluted 
  12. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  13. soda ash into each container. Let them sit for a further hour to allow the soda ash to 
  14. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  15. complete the dyeing process by fixing the dye to the fibre. You can stir at this point 
  16. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  17. if you wish. Remember that the more you stir your fabric, the less texture you will 
  18. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  19. achieve at the end. A quick stir to mix in the soda ash is enough.  When your time is 
  20. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  21. up, remove the fabric from the containers and squeeze out any excess dye. This can 
  22. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  23. be safely disposed of down the drain. Remove any ties or rubber bands and loosen 
  24. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  25. the fabrics. The designs will be obvious on the fabrics at this point. Put the fabric into 
  26. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  27. a bucket filled with cold water. Rinse until the water runs relatively clear. At this 
  28. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  29. point you can wash in your machine on a hot/warm cycle. Use synthropol SP if you 
  30. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  31. have it or your usual washing detergent if you don't. Rinse again in cold water until 
  32. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  33. there is no further run-off. If you have followed these steps correctly, you shouldn't 
  34. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  35. have any problems with the dyes running in the future. Hang out to dry, iron and 
  36. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  37. fold and fondle with delight, and start planning your next quilt or dyeing project.
