- In this exercise we will be dyeing a single colour graduation. That is, using one
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- colour, we will dye a series of shades from dark to light. We will also be using the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- "Fast Track" dye method (see 'Different Dye Methods'), or Method One. Prepare your
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- workspace by laying down protective coverings and have all of your equipment
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- handy. You will need a collection of jugs, jars, bottles or zip-lock plastic bags to dye
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the fabric in. We are using the folded fabric for this project from the fabric that you
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- have already prepared (see Fabric Preparation), as well as a spare piece to protect
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the surface you are using and to catch loose dry dye. A jug which has measures on
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the side containing 50g of soda ash (or 4 imperial tablespoons), and a stirring stick.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- You'll need: hot water to dilute the soda ash, as well as warm water to dissolve the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dye; gloves to protect your skin; a mask to prevent breathing in stray dye molecules;
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- a container with measures on the side to accurately measure the dye concentrate; a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- container with a lid to measure and shake the dye to dissolve; measuring spoons or
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- a scale to measure out 3g of dye, (see 'Conversion Chart') as well as the dye colour of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- your choice. We are using Procion red MX5B for this exercise (see 'Dye Chart').
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Prepare to measure your dye by wetting the spare piece of fabric and laying it flat
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- onto the surface you are using like a tablecloth. Wear your dust mask for this
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- procedure and work in a well-ventilated area. Using your scale, measure out 3g of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dye. If you don't have a scale, refer to the 'Conversion Chart' and measure out the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- appropriate amount of dye. Place this into the container that has a lid. Add a small
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- amount of warm water. Put the lid on tightly and give a shake. Your dye should
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dissolve easily. If it doesn't, you can add a spoonful of urea to complete the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dissolution or if the dye is in pellet form and not a powder form, a tiny drop of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- detergent will dissolve the oil base that is holding the dye in a pellet. Pour the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dissolved dye into the smaller jug with the measurements on the side. Add a little
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- more warm water to the original jar to rinse out any leftover dye and pour that into
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the small jug too. Top up the jug to a number that you can easily divide in half.
