- So far I have shown you how to mix colours once they are diluted. For even more
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- accurate dyeing recipes, you can use a scale to weigh out each different dye powder
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- before adding it to the dye bath. You can do this once you know the recipe of the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- colour you wish to dye, or you can work it out from the colour wheels you've
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- experimented with, extrapolating for a bigger or smaller piece of fabric and how
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- light or dark you want the colour to be.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- To use the scale, place a piece of paper or a plastic jar on the scale before turning it
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- on. Turn the scale on so that it zeroes itself. Weigh out the powder by gently tapping
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the side of the container. Remember to observe the safety rules (see 'About Fibre
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Reactive Dyes'). Now you are ready to dilute the powder with water and add to the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dye bath.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- A note on record-keeping. You may not wish to keep any records at all and use a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- serendipitous approach to your dyeing. This is absolutely fine and I worked this way
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- for a long time. If this is the case, there is no need to even weigh or attempt to
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- accurately measure your dye. I thought I would remember what I had done. As we
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- get older and more experienced, we have more things to remember. And I found
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- that I couldn't remember all of the colours that I wanted to. By having a detailed
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- record of dyes and their recipes, I could repeat colours that I wanted to, on more
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- than one occasion. I used a hardcover book to keep my records in. Customers would
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- also choose a colour from my records if I didn't have it in stock and using the "Slow
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- and Comfortable" method of dyeing I could dye for them as a "take out". All they had
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- to do was simply wash the fabric out the next day. I have provided a printable recipe
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- card for you to record your recipes on. Simply print out and fill in the blanks. I have
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- filed mine in a display book. You might like to keep yours in a card file.
