  1. Method One. Fast Track

  3. Mix dye, water and fibre.

  5. Wait half an hour.

  7. Add soda ash and stir.
  8. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  9. Leave for an hour and rinse and wash.

  11. Simply follow the basic method. Add your hot water and fabric and dye to a 
  12. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  13. container. Wait for half an hour and then add the soda ash. Wait for an hour and 
  14. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  15. then rinse in cold water and then wash in hot. Use a good quality detergent such as 
  16. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  17. Synthropol.
  18. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  19. Method Two. Slow and Comfortable
  20. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  21. Mix dye, water, fibre and soda ash.
  22. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  23. Wash out sometime after four hours - whenever you get to it.

  25. This method is handy if you want to work on something later but have to go out 
  26. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  27. now, and can't hang around to add the soda ash. Use the same amounts as for the 
  28. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  29. first method but just throw it all in together. If you are using a vat method as 
  30. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  31. opposed to a low water immersion technique, then add some salt (about 1 cup per 
  32. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  33. bucket) to help the dye find the fibre. A little detergent to lower the surface tension 
  34. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  35. helps here too.
  36. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  37. Method Three. Whatever will be, will be....

  39. Soak fabric in soda ash solution.

  41. Apply dye as and when you get to it.

  43. Batch somewhere warm.

  45. Wash out when you think it's done.

  47. For a basic soda ash solution soak, mix 9 imperial Tablespoons, or 100g of soda ash

  49. in a bucket of hot water. Soak the fabric in the bucket for up to an hour. Hang out to

  51. dry before use. You can now apply the dye, any way you want to. Add a couple of 
  52. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  53. teaspoons of urea to the dye solution before you apply it to the fabric to help keep 
  54. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  55. the dye wet so that it can react with the fibre. You can sponge, spray, paint or print it 
  56. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  57. on. Roll it up in plastic and leave to batch in a warm spot for at least 4 hours. The

  59. longer the better.
