- Michelle Steel is the product of generations of stitchers. Her mother and
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- grandmother were both stitchers and crafters. Living in remote Australia, the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- women become adept at producing things they needed rather than buying them.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Her mother was constantly at the machine, sewing all manner of items. Michelle
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- remembers her first attempt at sewing dolls clothes, the seams were on the outside.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Her first dress was made when she was 7 years old and her first attempt at
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- patchwork was about the same time. The item in question was hexagons, English
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Piecing style, and is still a UFO. It's the first, but I'm sure not the last, and possibly
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- won't be the oldest UFO either. Michelle's mother taught her to embroider, crochet,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- as well as sew, and then at 15 she taught Michelle to knit during a very boring
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- episode of the chickenpox. Since then, Michelle has knitted to commission as well as
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- experimented with textile and surface design. After leaving high school in 1983,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Michelle moved to Cairns in far north Queensland where she trained to be a nurse. In
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- 1986 she moved to Perth where she continued to knit to commission and further
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- developed her spinning skills. In 1988 she left Australia for a world tour that included
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- backpacking around Europe and discovering other crafts to be investigated further.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- However, it wasn't until Michelle finished her midwifery training in London and went
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- home for a holiday in 1991, that her mother introduced her to Patchwork and
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Quilting. After all, what else is there to do in amongst the sugar cane fields in tropical
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- QLD, especially after living in London! She has successfully kept Michelle out of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- mischief ever since! So nine weeks later, Michelle returned to London with three
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- complete quilts, and a new passion. Her partner and later-to-be husband didn't
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- know what hit him, but he was the cause of the next passion when he bought
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Michelle a book on how to dye fabric. Not only did he have to deal with piles of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- fabric everywhere, he had to deal with wet piles of fabric everywhere. After their
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- return to Australia in 1993, and the birth of their son Jack in 1995, Michelle and good
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- friend Ami Hillege started a business together pooling their resources of business
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- smarts, design ideas and techniques in textiles to produce a truly unique range of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- hand-dyed and hand-screen printed fabrics with Australian patriotic designs. The
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- fabrics were developed further into patterns and kits. The business was called Oz
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Dye-Art Fabrics and the girls travelled all over Australia and even went to the USA to
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Spring market. When Ami's family was transferred to Melbourne for work, the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- business continued for nine months but was closed due to the difficulties of working
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- at a distance. They are still contacted for patterns and fabrics. Now, as a single mum,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Michelle continues to work as a midwife, but keeps her fingers on the pulse of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- quilting by teaching locally as well as producing projects for magazines. This new
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- venture of producing CDroms for quilters is an interesting addition to her quilting
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- adventures.
