- Dyeing a colour wheel is the same process as a double graduation, but instead of
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- working one way along a line of containers, you work along a section of the wheel,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- or around the corner if you prefer. We will also be using the 'Fast Track' dye method
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- (see 'Different Dye Methods') or Method One. Prepare your workspace by laying
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- down protective coverings and have all of your equipment handy. You will need 9
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- FQ's of fabric that you have already prepared 'Link to Fabric Preparation', as well as a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- spare piece to protect the surface you are using and to catch loose dry dye. A
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- collection of jugs, jars, bottles or zip lock plastic bags to dye the fabric in. A container
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- with a lid and measures on the side to accurately measure the dye concentrate. Dye,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- we are using Procion yellow MX8G, Procion red MX8B and Procion Turquoise MXG
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- for this exercise. (see 'Dye Chart'). Measuring spoons or a scale to measure out 3gms
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- of dye, (see 'Conversion Chart')
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- A dust mask. A jug which contains 150 gms of soda ash and a jug of hot water.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Prepare to measure your dye by wetting the spare piece of fabric and laying it flat
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- onto the surface you are using like a tablecloth. Use the piece from the exercise,
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- 'Dyeing a Graduation', you'll end up with an interesting piece of fabric. Wear your
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dust mask for this procedure and work in a well ventilated area. Using your scale and
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the yellow or first colour, measure out 3gms of dye. If you don't have a scale, refer to
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the 'Conversion Chart' and measure out the appropriate amount of dye. Place this
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- into the container that has a lid. Add a small amount of warm water. Put the lid on
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- tightly and give a shake. Your dye should dissolve easily. If it doesn't, you can add a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- spoonful of urea to complete the dissolution or if the dye is in pellet form and not a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- powder form, a tiny drop of detergent will dissolve the oil base that is holding the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dye in a pellet. Repeat this procedure with each of the colours that you plan on
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- using, using the other containers with lids. Now that the dye is dissolved you can
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- remove your dust mask.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Set out the dyeing containers into a triangle with equal numbers on each side. Place
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- your dye solutions at each point, to help remind you where you're at. Place a FQ into
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- each container and push down to the bottom.
