  1. Dyeing a colour wheel is the same process as a double graduation, but instead of

  3. working one way along a line of containers, you work along a section of the wheel,

  5. or around the corner if you prefer. We will also be using the 'Fast Track' dye method

  7. (see 'Different Dye Methods') or Method One.  Prepare your workspace by laying

  9. down protective coverings and have all of your equipment handy. You will need 9 
  10. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  11. FQ's of fabric that you have already prepared 'Link to Fabric Preparation', as well as a 
  12. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  13. spare piece to protect the surface you are using and to catch loose dry dye. A 
  14. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  15. collection of jugs, jars, bottles or zip lock plastic bags to dye the fabric in. A container 
  16. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  17. with a lid and measures on the side to accurately measure the dye concentrate. Dye, 
  18. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  19. we are using Procion yellow MX8G, Procion red MX8B and Procion Turquoise MXG

  21. for this exercise. (see 'Dye Chart'). Measuring spoons or a scale to measure out 3gms

  23. of dye, (see 'Conversion Chart')

  25.  A dust mask. A jug which contains 150 gms of soda ash and a jug of hot water.

  27. Prepare to measure your dye by wetting the spare piece of fabric and laying it flat 
  28. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  29. onto the surface you are using like a tablecloth. Use the piece from the exercise,

  31. 'Dyeing a Graduation', you'll end up with an interesting piece of fabric. Wear your 
  32. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  33. dust mask for this procedure and work in a well ventilated area. Using your scale and 
  34. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  35. the yellow or first colour, measure out 3gms of dye. If you don't have a scale, refer to 
  36. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  37. the 'Conversion Chart' and measure out the appropriate amount of dye. Place this 
  38. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  39. into the container that has a lid. Add a small amount of warm water. Put the lid on 
  40. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  41. tightly and give a shake. Your dye should dissolve easily. If it doesn't, you can add a 
  42. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  43. spoonful of urea to complete the dissolution or if the dye is in pellet form and not a 
  44. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  45. powder form, a tiny drop of detergent will dissolve the oil base that is holding the 
  46. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  47. dye in a pellet. Repeat this procedure with each of the colours that you plan on 
  48. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  49. using, using the other containers with lids.  Now that the dye is dissolved you can 
  50. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  51. remove your dust mask. 
  52. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  53. Set out the dyeing containers into a triangle with equal numbers on each side. Place 
  54. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  55. your dye solutions at each point, to help remind you where you're at. Place a FQ into 
  56. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  57. each container and push down to the bottom.
