- Dyeing a double graduation is the same process as a single graduation, but
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- after the first colour is dyed, you go back along the line of containers from the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- opposite direction, and add a second colour. So start out the same as for a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- single graduation. We will also be using the "Fast Track" dye method (see
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- 'Different Dye Methods') or Method One. Prepare your workspace by laying
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- down protective coverings and have all of your equipment handy. You will
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- need: The fabric that you have already prepared (see 'Fabric Preparation'), as
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- well as a spare piece to protect the surface you are using and to catch loose
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- dry dye; gloves to protect your skin; a mask to prevent breathing in stray dye
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- molecules; a jug which has measures on the side containing 50g of soda ash
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- (or 4 imperial tablespoons), a stirring stick; hot water to dilute the soda ash, as
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- well as warm water to dissolve the dye; a collection of jugs, jars, bottles or zip-
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- lock plastic bags to dye the fabric in; a container with a lid and measures on the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- side to accurately measure the dye concentrate; Dye - we are using Procion
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- yellow MX4R and Procion Blue MXG for this exercise (see 'Dye Chart')
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- measuring spoons or a scale to measure out 3g of dye (see 'Conversion
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Chart').
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Prepare to measure your dye by wetting the spare piece of fabric and laying it
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- flat onto the surface you are using like a tablecloth. Use the piece from the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- exercise, 'Dyeing a Graduation', you'll end up with an interesting piece of fabric.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Wear your dust mask for this procedure and work in a well ventilated area.
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- Using your scale and the yellow or first colour, measure out 3g of dye. If you
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- don't have a scale, refer to the 'Conversion Chart' and measure out the
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- appropriate amount of dye. Place this into the container that has a lid. Add a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- small amount of warm water. Put the lid on tightly and give a shake. Your dye
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- should dissolve easily. If it doesn't, you can add a spoonful of urea to complete
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the dissolution or if the dye is in pellet form and not a powder form, a tiny drop
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- of detergent will dissolve the oil base that is holding the dye in a pellet. Now
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- that the dye is dissolved you can remove your dust mask. Top up the jug to a
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- number that you can easily divide in half. I have chosen 400ml. Place a mark
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- there with a permanent marker to remind yourself, or make a note if you need
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- to. The volume of water isn't as important as providing enough liquid to soak
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the fabric. Place the lid on the jar of dye and set aside. clean and clear away
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- the scale and fabric. Wipe your surface to be sure there is no dry dye powder
- --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
- hanging around. Keep the piece of fabric for later use.
