1. Introduction
DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware is a method of software distribution that
gives the user a chance to try the software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and
continue to use it, you are expected to register.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and
commercial software and the copyright holder retains
all rights, with the exception that copying and
distributing the program for evaluation purposes is
encouraged, subject to certain conditions.
2. License Agreement and Warranty
Please read the terms below. If you do not agree to
them you are requested to stop using the program and
to remove the program from your computer.
All users of WinOCR 2.2 must accept the following
disclaimer of warranty and conditions of usage:
WinOCR 2.2 is supplied as is. The author does
not warrant that the software is error-free and
assumes no liability for damages, direct or
consequential, which may result from the use of
WinOCR 2.2.
The author expressly requests that you do not
make changes or modifications to the software.
Also you may not dis-assemble or reverse
engineer the software in any way.
Users evaluating WinOCR 2.2 do so under the
following conditions:
The author grants you the right to evaluate
WinOCR 2.2 for a period of 30 days and requests
that if you are satisfied that you then
register the product.
Commercial users of WinOCR 2.2 must register
and pay for their copies of WinOCR 2.2 within
30 days of first use or their license is
withdrawn.
3. About the ASP
The Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) was
formed in 1987 by a group of Shareware authors. The
intention was to inform users about Shareware,
encourage professionalism among authors and
discourage unethical practices (crippling programs,
excessive reminder screens, failure to respond to
registration) that were threatening the development
of the Shareware industry.
The author of WinOCR is a member of the ASP and the
following is the Ombudsman statement:
"This program is produced by a member of the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP
wants to make sure that the Shareware principle
works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
Shareware-related problem with an ASP member by
contacting the member directly, ASP may be able
to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not
provide technical support for members' products.
Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover
Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman
70007,3536."
4. Distribution
Feel free to share WinOCR with your
friends, but please do not distribute the
program in an incomplete or modified form,
or as part of another system, or for a
fee.
Anyone distributing WinOCR 2.2 for any
kind of remuneration must first contact
the author for permission. This
authorisation will be automatically
granted to distributors recognised by the
(ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
Shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering WinOCR 2.2
immediately. See VENDOR.DOC for more
details.
5. Installation
The installation of WINOCR involves extracting the
self-extractor ocr.exe into a sub-directory on your
hard disk. Executing the self-extractor will set up
all the files required to run WINOCR. You should add
the directory path of the sub-directory into which
you extracted WINOCR into the PATH statement in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
If you do not understand the paragraph above then
you should carefully follow the instruction below
and refer where necessary to your DOS manual.
1. Go to the DOS prompt.
You should see a c:\> or something similar on
your screen.
2. Make a sub-directory for WINOCR on your hard
disk.
To do this type:
MD \WINOCR
3. Change to the sub-directory that you have just
created.
To do this type:
CD \WINOCR
4. Now execute the self-extractor. Include the
drive letter in the command.
To do this type:
A:OCR
6. Getting Started
RUNNING WINOCR
WINOCR requires WINDOWS so before attempting to run
it you should start windows. There are then several
ways to run a program for which you should refer to
the WINDOWS USER GUIDE.
One way to do it is to use PROGRAM MANAGER. Select
RUN from the FILE menu option. When the dialog box
appears type WINOCR, you may have to type
C:\WINOCR\WINOCR if you haven't added the sub-
directory where you placed the program to your PATH
statement.
It is recommended that you add WinOCR to a PROGRAM
MANAGER group. A good place to put it would be in
the ACCESSORIES group where you can find NOTEPAD,
CARDFILE, etc.; or in the group that contains your
scanner software.
HOW WINOCR WORKS
WinOCR works by pattern matching. It matches the
glyph that it is given (the bitmap of an individual
character) against the typical appearance of each
character in the character set and chooses the
closest match. To do this it requires a template
that describes the font and size of character that
it is looking for.
One thing you should note is that the program will
not work correctly if you do not take sufficient
care setting up the templates. However, the
advantage of using templates is the speed, and the
fact that for a given book or magazine that you are
working from you only have to set up the template
once.
For more details see MANUAL.WRI. This file can be
examined using the WRITE program supplied with
WINDOWS.
TIPS
Scan at 400dpi.
Make sure the scan is straight.
Adjust the brightness of your scanner if necessary.
Use the -/+ keys to Shrink/Enlarge bitmaps.
7. Support
Hopefully your use of WinOCR will be easy
and trouble-free. However, problems may
arise and if so do not hesitate to contact
the author - see the contact details.
Also if you spot any bugs or have any
ideas for improvements these would be
welcome.
This support is one of the benefits of
registration. It is provided via Mail or
eMail and is lifetime (of the program not
the author!) support.
