OCR: Vehicles must be fitted with an instrument capable of giving audible warnings of approach. The tone must be continuous and uniform. The horn should be regarded as a warning device and not used aggressively or to assert right of way. If you are driving safely and correctly anticipating road events, you will seldom need to use the car horn. On most vehicles the horn switch is located either on the steering wheel or on the end of the indicator's stalk. You should not sound your horn when: Horn > your vehicle is stationary > in a built up area between 11.30 pm and 7 am except when there is danger from another moving vehicle. You may need to use the horn if you decide another road user has not seen you or cannot see you for obstructions, and needs to know you are there. Aggressive or long sounding of the horn is dangerous as it can distract other drivers, as well as alarm pedestrians. Periodic car checks should include checking that the horn both works and can be heard clearly.
