OCR: Without oil lubrication an engine can tear itself apart within a few minutes of driving off. Engine oil is forced, under high pressure, along a series of pipes, to squeeze between the moving metal-to-metal parts to prevent damaging contact. The engine oil performs vital tasks at high pressures: > resists wear and tear on the moving surfaces > combats corrosive acids produced by the burning fuel > helps lubricate and keep the engine cool Oil pressure information is given by a gauge and/or an indicator light on the instrument panel. If the level is low or the light comes on, then stop driving and check the oil level. The DSA recommends checking the oil level every time you fill up with fuel. To check the level, assuming the car is on level ground: > find the dipstick, which is usually halfway down one side of the engine cylinder block > remove the dipstick, clean with cloth and return to slot > remove the stick again and check that the oil level is between the minimum and maximum markings Make sure you refill with the oil type recommended in the owner's handbook for the particular engine model and size.
