OCR: DRIVING TEST SUCCESS INFORMATION FACT SHEET PRACTICAL ABOUT: Pedestrian Crossings: The Zebra Crossing Pedestrian crossings give certain rights of way across the road to people on foot. There are various types of pedestrian crossing of which the Zebra crossing is the simplest. Zebra crossings are identified by flashing yellow beacons and a striped footway right across the road. As with other pedestrian crossings, the Zebra crossing has zig-zag lines at the side and in the centre of the road within which all drivers must not park. Drivers must not overtake when approaching a Zebra crossing. On this crossing, pedestrians have right of way over all vehicles and so drivers should be extra vigilent on approach, looking to both sides of the crossing to see if pedestrians are waiting, and be prepared to stop and wait for them. You should approach the crossing with the Mirror Signal Manoeuvre Illustration 1 - The Zebra Crossing routine and be prepared to stop before the dashed giveway lines at the crossing. Give yourself more road and time to stop if the road is wet or is icy. Things you should do: Allow plenty of time for pedestrians to completely cross the road, and - approach the crossing with the M.S.M routine especially the elderly, disabled or children who will take longer to cross. · give way to any pedestrians waiting to cross You should not harrass those crossing the road by revving the engine · wait patiently for the crossing to completely clear or using the car horn. Nor should you wave at them to walk faster. move off only when you can clear the crossing If you are moving slowly in a traffic queue and encounter a pedestrian Things you should not do: crossing, keep the crossing clear and only move forward when you know you can move past it. stop at the last moment when people are crossing rev the engine, inch forward or use the horn You MUST give way to anyone who is already crossing or who has - wave pedestrians across or flash the headlights stepped out onto the crossing. · stop on the crossing while in a traffic queue Watch out for pedestrians who rush across the crossing at the last moment, and for those pedestrians who cross when traffic in front of you has obscured the view to either side of the crossing.
