  12. About The Program
  13. =================
  14.  
  15. 1.  This is a heavy duty Word Processing Program intended for a wide
  16.     variety of word processing and editing tasks. As installed, it is
  17.     ideal for the touch typist - there is no need to take your hands
  18.     off the home row to activate any of the functions.
  19.  
  20. 2.  The novice should have no difficulty in using the program - the
  21.     program is easy to learn, since it comes with context sensitive
  22.     help available at the press of the F1 key. There is also a
  23.     tutorial on the program disk, for novice users to try out the
  24.     various functions.
  25.  
  26. 3.  The program comes supplied with industry standard Pull Down Menus
  27.     to make learning it even easier. The point and select usage means
  28.     that touch typists do not need to lift their hands from the home
  29.     row. In addition, each command on the pull down menu can
  30.     optionally display the command sequence needed to activate it, so
  31.     novices can learn the commands. The pull down menu is activated by
  32.     the F10 key.
  33.  
  34. 4.  The keyboard commands are fully configurable from an installation
  35.     program. Many of the options are also configurable from inside the
  36.     program. As supplied, it comes installed with a WordstarTM
  37.     compatible interface, which is the industry standard for editor
  38.     programs. Experienced users do not need to use the pull down
  39.     menus, since all functions of the menu are also available at the
  40.     press of one or two keys.

  42. 5.  The word processor document files are ASCII text files, which
  43.     means that there are no funny embedded characters (unless you use
  44.     the print control sequences) and no hi order bits set on. The
  45.     files are WordstarTM compatible, which means that you can load
  46.     them into any word processor that reads Wordstar files. Apart from
  47.     printer control strings, all formatting commands are by use of dot
  48.     commands (. in column one) or embedded functions ({. }) in the
  49.     text body.

  51. 6.  There are up to 8 editing windows, which can look at different
  52.     files or the same file. These files can be loaded from the
  53.     parameter line. Any window can be zoomed to occupy the entire
  54.     screen.
  55.  
  56. 7.  Printer support includes laser printers. It is easy to customise
  57.     the printer drivers, and different ones can be selected from a
  58.     pick list at print time. Printing also occurs in background,
  59.     letting you go on with other word processing tasks.
  60.  
  61. 8.  The program comes with a 100,000 word dictionary and an update
  62.     program that will add or delete words from the dictionary. In
  63.     addition to the main dictionary, you can set up auxiliary
  64.     dictionaries in each directory, containing words specific to
  65.     particular projects. Main dictionaries are available in American,
  66.     Australian and British versions.

  68. 9.  The program can generate indexes and tables of contents. Both
  69.     these files can be customised during the generation by use of
  70.     options embedded in the text. In addition, paragraphs can be
  71.     numbered automatically in several formats.

  73. 10. The program comes with macro facilities, the ability to record
  74.     keystrokes, and a number of macro files for additional
  75.     flexibility. In addition, macros can be invoked at program start
  76.     up from the parameter line.

  78. 11. Printing, index and table of contents generation can include other
  79.     files, which can in turn include other files, up to 5 levels of
  80.     nesting. This means that even the biggest novel or research paper
  81.     can be easily managed.

  83. 12. Automatic reformatting of text is available. This can be turned ON
  84.     and OFF as required. In addition automatic hyphenation is
  85.     available.

  87. 13. Tables are supported, as is word wrap and justification of each
  88.     table column independently. Column mode blocks can be defined and
  89.     copied, moved or deleted.

  91. 14. Comprehensive monitor support - MONO, CGA, EGA or VGA or HERCULES.

  93. 15. DOS shell is supported to permit use of all DOS commands from
  94.     within the program. Can also free up memory to run large programs.

  96. 16. A pop up calculator with 16 functions is included. The calculation
  97.     result can be pasted into your text.

  99. 17. The program comes with support for box and line drawing, with
  100.     these characters available at the press of a key. Load the macro
  101.     files SINGLE.MAC for single lines and DOUBLE.MAC for double lines.
  102.     Additional macro files contain European and Greek characters.

  104. 18. Optional on screen display of fonts is also available. You can
  105.     edit text with this mode operating (unlike wordstar).
  106.  
  107. 19. Printing can have multiple headers and footers, and these can
  108.     include functions such as current date or time.
  109.  
  110. 20. Embedded print functions are supported in both headers / footers
  111.     and within the text body. Print functions can be evaluated on
  112.     screen, and include date and time, file name, revision marking and
  113.     so on.

  115. 21. Comprehensive text formatting is available and can be stored in
  116.     the text as ruler lines. There is no limit on the number of ruler
  117.     lines you can have. There is even a file of standard ruler lines
  118.     that can be automatically included into your text. You can add
  119.     other lines to this file should you so desire.

  121. 22. Mouse support.

  123. 23. Automatic save feature after number of minutes or number of
  124.     keystrokes (can be disabled)

  126. 24. Full featured mail merge facility that includes mathematic
  127.     calculations, conditional merging using IF ELSE constructs and so
  128.     on.

  130. 25. File names can have up to 65 character descriptions added to them,
  131.     in order to make recognition of files easier. These descriptions
  132.     are displayed when files are listed, and can be altered at the
  133.     press of a key. In addition, a utility (FI) is supplied to display
  134.     and change file descriptions from the dos prompt. It acts like a
  135.     replacement of the DOS DIR command.

  137. 26. Support for foot notes and end notes. Notes can span multiple
  138.     include files.

  140. 27. Snaking columns of text supported. These newspaper style columns
  141.     (not to be confused with tables) have text wrapping to the next
  142.     column when the bottom of the current one is reached.

  144. 28. Hundreds of other sophisticated features like insertion of current
  145.     date or time (in different formats), the ability to mark changed
  146.     text in the left hand margin, offset page number on odd or even
  147.     pages, print page numbers as roman Numerals and so on.

  149. 29. The installed command make it perfect for Lap tops, while the
  150.     cursor can be changed to a hard block of colour where it is
  151.     ordinarily hard to see.

  239. Running the Program
  240. ===================
  241.  
  242. The manual describes how to install and run the program. Briefly - the
  243. overlay file (WF.OVR) must be in the default directory unless you have
  244. installed the home directory:
  245.  
  246.     1. Make the Word Fugue directory the default directory
  247.     2. Run Word Fugue by typing in WF
  248.     3. Install the home directory by F10 O G H to display the
  249.        default directory. Press ENTER to record it, followed by ESC to
  250.        return to the options menu, S to save the defaults, and then
  251.        press ESC 3 times to exit the pulldown menus and return to text
  252.        entry mode

  254. These instructions may seem long winded, but they are operating a
  255. pulldown menu, and will be intuitively obvious when you try it.

  257. The Manual on Disk
  258. =====================
  259.  
  260. The manual is set up for printing using Word Fugue, and is a very good
  261. demo of how to go about using many of the print commands. It also
  262. shows you how to set up a large document in several files, with a
  263. master document to pull them all together. It is an abridged version
  264. of the full manual, which currently runs to over 260 pages or 900k.
  265.  
  266. To read the manual, simply load the files WF.001 to WF.018 into Word
  267. Fugue and browse them. They will also show you how to set up a large
  268. document consisting of several chapters, how to use ruler lines and
  269. formatting and so on. If you need to print the manual, make sure you
  270. have plenty of paper in your printer (at least 180 pages), load WF.DOC
  271. into Word Fugue, press Ctrl K P to activate the print menu, select
  272. an appropriate PDF file (Which printer will show you a list to choose
  273. from), and press P to commence printing.
