<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080>What is a Successful Resume Campaign
<:#231,10080>There are two main objectives to creating a successful resume campaign:
<:#231,10080>
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Uniqueness
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Organization
<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Uniqueness
@Body Single@<:#1155,10080>Employers are often bombarded with resumes from prospective employees. A single classified advertisement can often generate hundreds of responses. In a large stack of resumes, quite often the visual elements of a resume are what put it in the pile that is a
ctually to be read. A unique but unobtrusive page design can help you get past that first cut. You can achieve uniqueness in a number of ways.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@BodySinHead@<:#240,10080>Paper Color/Type
@Body Single@<:#1386,10080>Most resumes are submitted on either white, light gray, or yellow paper. The most visual aspect of a resume is the paper color. It is the first thing the prospective employee sees. Using unique colors, such as, mauve, light purple, light blue, etc. can give
you an edge over others. Also, the type of paper your resume is printed on is important. You should only use quality bond paper. This is an accepted minimum standard for resumes. Using photocopy or laser paper will, in many cases, can, in some cases, ensur
e that yours will be one of the first rejects.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@BodySinHead@<:#240,10080>Printing vs. Photocopying
@Body Single@<:#924,10080>Printing your resume from a laser printer should be the accepted minimum for resume production. A trained resume reviewer will spot a photocopied resume from a mile away and will treat your resume accordingly. Printing your resume indicates to the prospecti
ve employer that you have taken the time to print out your resume and thus, are a serious candidate for the position you are seeking.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@BodySinHead@<:#240,10080>Design
@Body Single@<:#924,10080>Many books have been published that tell you how to write a resume. Consequently, over the years, resumes have achieved a "sameness" problem. That is to say, they all look the same. Page design is an important consideration for a resume. Applying a stylish,
consistent look to your resume will indicate to prospective employers that you are a creative and original person.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@BodySinHead@<:#240,10080>Individuality
@Body Single@<:#1386,10080>Printing your cover letter and envelop with the employer's name is a definate plus to your chances of getting an interview. Seasoned resume reviewers can tell when you have tailored a resume package to them specifically or are doing a "mass market" resume c
ampaign (i.e., sending your generic resume everywhere and hoping to land a job through sheer volume). Tailoring the resume to the employer shows the employer that you have thought out your resume campaign and have taken the time to implement it properly.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Organization
@Body Single@<:#924,10080>Organization is a key component of a successful resume campaign. An unorganized resume campaign can stop you dead in the water with most employers. By organization, we mean, consistency. From your resume to your cover letter to the envelope that you send it
in. Consistency is taking the design and tone of writing and using it with all document production in your resume campaign.
@Subhead@<:#293,10080>The Seven Elements
<:#231,10080>There are essentially seven elements to a successful resume campaign:
<:#231,10080>
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Cover Letter
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Resume
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Letters of Recommendation
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Salary History Page
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>References Page
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Thank You Letters
@Bullet@<:#231,10080>Envelope
<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Cover Letter
@Body Single@<:#1386,10080>A cover letter should be warm in tone and use elements of the page design that is used for the accompanying resume. It is benefical to date the cover letter and to use standard business letter practices, such as, printing the name of the person to receive t
he letter and their company address at the top of the page. Always sign your cover letter as you would any other business letter. Never attach a cover letter to a resume if you are applying for a job in person. Cover letters and used primarily when you are
mailing your resume to a prospective employer.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Resume
@Body Single@<:#2541,10080>Your resume should be the showpiece of your resume campaign. It should have all the design elements of the package and should be written clearly. Other peripheral elements of your resume campaign should use some of the design elements of your resume but not
all of them. The reason for this is because you want your resume to stand out from the other elements of your resume campaign. This is, afterall, the most important document in your resume campaign and the one element that you want the employer to read ove
r all others. This should be reflected in the page design. Many people make the mistake of trying to put too much information in their resume. Remember, that a resume is an overview of your skills and experience. Concentrate on the highlights of your work h
istory and use verbs to describe various duties. By getting too specific in your resume, you can often get yourself put in the reject file before you've even had an interview. Remember that a resume isn't designed to get you a job, it's designed to get you
an interview, through which you can sell yourself to the company in person.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Letters of Recommendation
@Body Single@<:#1617,10080>Generally, you would not send a letter of recommendation to a company unless the company specifically requests you to do so. Letters of recommendation are usually the last step towards employment. Most employers will only ask for letters of recommendation o
r references if they have interviewed you and are on the verge of hiring you. It is a good idea to have any letters of recommendation with you at the interview so that you can show them to the employer if they ask. Always reprint the original letter using t
he same design standard that you used for all other peripheral elements of your resume campaign (i.e., cover letter, References page, thank you letter, etc.).
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Salary History Page
@Body Single@<:#2772,10080>Sometimes an employer requires your salary history. This is both good news and bad news for you. Often employers will reject your resume campaign if your salary at past positions is higher than they can offer. Other times it is a plus for you. Never volunte
er a salary history page unless the employer specifically requests it. Some employers ask for a salary history in its newspaper ad. If this is the case, send the salary history page with your cover letter and resume. Be prepared though, not to hear from the
employer if you've had positions that paid above industry standards. It is important to note, that a salary history page does not tell the employer the amount of compensation you are looking for but is, in effect, a measuring tool to determine if the compa
ny can compensate you as well as your past positions. If employers ask you specifically what your salary requirements are always tell them that they are negotiable. An employer will not discriminate against you for not initially revealing how much you want
to be paid. As with the letters of recommendation and other peripheral elements of your resume campaign, use the same style to achieve consistency over the course of your resume campaign.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> References Page
@Body Single@<:#1155,10080>The References page should use the same design as all the other peripheral documents. Generally, you would not submit this element initially unless it was specifically requested by the employer. The most usual method of submitting a references page is at th
e actual interview. Make sure you take the references page with you in case the employer asks for references. Do not volunteer the references page unless it is specifically requested by the employer.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080> Thank You Letters
@Body Single@<:#1386,10080>Many people have a problem with sending follow up thank you letters after an interview. A thank you letter can often be the difference between employment and the unemployment line. Remember that an interview goes two ways. The employer is interviewing you t
o determine if you are suitable for the position and you are interviewing the employer to see if the position is suitable for you. If you have an interview for a position you really want, there's no reason not to send a thank you letter a day or two after t
he interview. For the employer, thank you letters do two things:
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Bullet 1@<:#231,10080>It shows the employer that you are interested and excited about the position.
@Bullet 1@<:#462,10080>It jogs the memory of the employer who has interviewed scores of candidates about you and your qualifications.
@Bullet 1@<:#462,10080>In a close race with another applicant for a position, a thank you letter by you can often put you over the top.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Body Single@<:#693,10080>Thank you letters should be warm, sincere, and brief. You should also use the same perifpheral design elements you have been using all along. This again, reinforces in the mind of the employer that consistency is a trait that you have.
@Body Single@<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080>Envelopes
<:#2079,10080>The envelope in which any resume campaign document is sent in is important because it is the very first thing seen by the prospective employer. Using envelopes that match the paper color/type you are using only reinforces your serious committment in the min
d of the employer. By using perifpheral design elements of your resume campaign, you again, visually demonstrate your style and consistency. Use #10 envelopes because a standard 8
</}> x 11 piece of paper can be folded in three and easily fit into the envelope. Using a smaller envelope will require you to mangle your resume in order to get it into the envelope and ruin the effect that you are trying to achieve. Print both the address
and your return address on them. Most resumes are submitted in plain white envelopes that are handwritten. With printed envelopes, you immediately set yourself apart from the rest of the applicants.
<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080>What ProStyle Resume 1.0 Does
<:#1155,10080>All of what you read so far can be achieved by using the style files in ProStyle Resume 1.0. This version of the program contains five individually designed resume pages. Each of them, contain an eye catching design that is attractive and unique but not obt
rusive. By registering ProStyle Resume 1.0, you will receive the all designs for all pieces of the resumes contained here. By using one of these resume campaigns, you can greatly increase your chances of getting the interview that is necessary for employmen
t.
<:#231,10080>
@Subhead@<:#293,10080>Names of Resume Files
<:#1848,10080>Each individual resume stylesheet was created as part of a SAM file. To start creating your resume, all you need to do is to open the appropriate file and simply type over the sample information. The style sheets were created as SAM files for two reasons. F
irstly, since you are going to be creating SAM files anyway with these style sheets, ProStyle Resume just does it for you. All you need to do is choose SAVE AS and save the file under a new filename. This will let you change the file on the screen yet save
the original file should you need it later on. Each SAM file is set up with specific printing instructions. To get the best results, we recommend (if possible) using the printer drivers and print set ups listed for each file. Note that using different prin
ter drivers will yield different results in the overall quality of the printed document.
<:#231,10080>
<:#693,10080>The printer drivers used in ProStyle Resume 1.0 are the HP II series printer drivers and the HP DeskJet printer drivers. If your printer is not HP compatible, you will need to print using printer drivers that your printer can understand.
<:#231,10080>
<:#240,10080><+!>NOTE TO USERS OF AMI PRO 3.0<-!>
<:#240,10080><+!>
<:#1155,10080>There are known problems with Ami Pro 3.0 concerning printing white text on a black background. Since many of the resume campaign files require printing of white text on black, you may run into this problem. If the white text does not appear on the printed
page. You will need to upgrade to Ami Pro 3.01 or downgrade to Ami Pro 2.0. Note that Ami Pro 3.01 can be downloaded from CompuServe in the Lotus forum. You can also contact Lotus directly to get the Ami Pro 3.01 upgrade.
