Title: Running Tutor on a Novell Network
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1254-12/93
Problem
While trying to run Tutor on a Novell network, the users are
taken back to a DOS prompt. The users have all rights in the
directories where they start Tutor.
Solution
The purpose of this document is to give Novell network
administrators suggestions for running Tutor from a network file
server. In this example, a Novell 2.15 server is used. The date
of TUTOR.COM is 05/31/91.
For the purposes of this example, it is assumed that a Novell
NetWare server is installed and running, and that WordPerfect 5.1
is correctly installed somewhere on that server. It is also
assumed that all files associated with Tutor have been installed
in a subdirectory of the program directory. In many cases this
directory is called LEARN or TUTOR; in this example, the
directory is called TUTOR.
The steps outlined below will provide a way for five users to run
the Tutor simultaneously:
1 Create five users: TU1, TU2, TU3, TU4, and TU5. Make
these users members of a group called TUTOR. Create a
user directory for each user name somewhere on the
server (such as U:\USERS\TU1 and so on).
You need to create a login script with the following
information for each user:
MAP DISPLAY OFF
MAP U:=SERVER/VOLUME:USERS\%LOGIN_NAME
MAP INS S16:=SERVER/VOLUME:PUBLIC
MAP INS S16:=SERVER/VOLUME:APPS\WP
MAP INS S16:=SERVER/VOLUME:APPS\WP\TUTOR
DOS SET WPC="/D-U:/PF-U:/U-%LOGIN_NAME"
2 The group TUTOR must have all rights in three places:
∙ The TUTOR directory (or your directory
where all the files associated with the
Tutor are kept)
∙ The SET directory (where the personal
*.SET files are created and stored)
∙ The personal user directories (such as
U:\USERS\TU2)
The users must have Read, Open, and Search rights in the
program directory (where the WP.EXE file is kept).
3 The *.WKB and *.TUT files in the Tutor directory must be
flagged Shareable Read-Only.
4 A valid and correct environment file must be created and
located within the WordPerfect program directory. The
contents of a valid environment file are:
/NT=1
/PS=F:\APPS\WPSET
This information should appear on separate lines. The
drive letter in the .ENV file should be a logical drive
letter rather than a search drive.
5 When a user wants to run Tutor, they should log in using
one of the five user names you created in step 1, such
as TU1. The login script will map WordPerfect, Tutor
and public directories as search drives. The user then
can execute Tutor from anywhere simply by typing
TUTOR.COM.
The temporary files that are created when WordPerfect is
executed are then redirected to the user's home
directory. For example, if a user logs in as TU1, the
temporary files are opened and stored in the
U:\USERS\TU1 directory. The WPTU1}.SET file is opened
and stored in the F:\APPS\WP\WPSET directory. The file
that Tutor uses to mark completed lessons is stored in
the TUTOR directory. When a user completes a lesson,
this information is stored in a file called MARKS.WP; it
will not be possible to ascertain which user has
completed what lesson. This may be added in future
releases of Tutor.
6 When the user is finished with a lesson or wants to
leave the lesson, they can choose the Exit option from
the main screen. This will close the temporary files,
write to the MARKS.WP file and exit the user back to the
DOS prompt.
If more users wish to execute Tutor simultaneously, simply
increase the number of users that belong to the Tutor group.
