  1. WnBrowse 3.5 Release Notes
  2. --------------------------

  4. Below are the changes made to WnBrowse since version 3.4. For full details
  5. read the WNBROWSE.TXT file.
  6.  
  7. New Features
  8. ------------
  9.  
  10.    1. Most of the options available from the 'Options' menu, plus some
  11.       new ones, have been moved to a new Preferences dialog accessed from
  12.       the Options menu.
  13.  
  14.    2. OEM to ANSI Support
  15.  
  16.       A new 'OEM to ANSI Translate' option has been added. When selected
  17.       any OEM characters in the file (such as IBM box drawing characters)
  18.       will be translated to their equivalent ANSI characters (this was
  19.       the default behaviour of earlier levels). When this option is not
  20.       selected, characters are not translated (useful to users in
  21.       countries where special characters are used, such as Umlauts).

  23.    3. Previously opened files available on File Menu
  24.  
  25.       WnBrowse now remembers the last nine files that were opened from the
  26.       Open dialog. These files are listed on the File menu. Files that are
  27.       opened via Drag and Drop, or the File Manager extension are not saved.

  29.    4. File Launch Improvements
  30.  
  31.       * WnBrowse now allows Windows EXE files being viewed to be launched.
  32.  
  33.       * Text files without associated applications (via File Manager), can
  34.         be launched into an editor. The Editor to use can be set from the
  35.         new Preferences dialog.
  36.  
  37.       * Files can now be launched from the File menu 'Launch Current File'
  38.         option.
  39.  
  40.       * A Minimize-on-Launch option is now available from the Preferences
  41.         dialog.
  42.  
  43.    5. WnBrowse now closes the file being browsed when it is minimized. The
  44.       file is re-opened when the WnBrowse window is restored.
  45.  
  46.    6. The WnBrowse File Manager extension now supports the File Manager
  47.       status bar available under Windows for Workgoups.
  48.  
  49.    7. When launching WnBrowse from the file manager extension, the extension
  50.       now expects WNBROWSE.EXE to be in the same directory as the extension
  51.       DLL (WBFXTEN.DLL). WNBROWSE.EXE is no longer required to be in a
  52.       directory contained in the DOS PATH environment variable.

  54.    8. WnBrowse will automatically install the File Manager extension when
  55.       run for the first time. 
  56.  
  57.    9. The information box now displays the Company Name for 16 bit 
  58.       Windows EXE and DLL files, if available.
  59.  
  60.   10. The DLL's imported by a Windows 16 bit or OS/2 1.X program are
  61.       now displayed in the file information dialog.
  62.  
  63.   11. Minor change to Zip content display
  64.  
  65.       * On the first display of the contents of a Zip file, the list
  66.         will be positioned to the first 'readme' file, if one is
  67.         present.

  69.       * On re-displaying the Zip list after viewing a Zipped file, the
  70.         list will be positioned to the file just viewed.

  72.   12. The TAB size can now be set via the Preferences dialog.
  73.   
  74.   13. A description of a button's function can be displayed by clicking 
  75.       the right mouse button over the button bar.
  76.  
  77.   14. The 256 character per line limit for text files can now be changed
  78.       to any value between 80 and 1024 by adding a parameter to the
  79.       WNBROWSE.INI file (MaxLineLen=nnn).

  81.       Note : While you can view files that contain long lines in text mode
  82.              by scrolling, you will not be able to print such files (unless
  83.              you have a very wide printer !). It is my intention to add
  84.              word wrap printer support in a future release of WnBrowse.

  86. Bugs Fixed
  87. ----------
  88.  
  89.    1. On rare occasions, searching backwards in a hex file did not 
  90.       find all matching strings.
  91.  
  92.    2. Viewing a file contained with a ZIP file with no extension name
  93.       (.ZIP .EXE etc) failed.
  94.  
  95.    4. WnBrowse now checks the data provided by Windows about fonts
  96.       for errors. WnBrowse will now cope with 'Problem' fonts rather
  97.       than falling over (with a zero divide exception).

  99. Known Problems
  100. --------------
  101.  
  102.    1. GPF failure opening a Windows program for browsing.
  103.  
  104.       On very rare occasions, WnBrowse will fail while opening a Windows
  105.       EXE file. The problem occurs when extracting the version information
  106.       from the file. I have only discovered one file that causes this
  107.       problem so far (the install program for Microsoft Access STFSETUP.EXE)
  108.       The bug is in a Windows support library VER.DLL and will be fixed by
  109.       Microsoft in due course (I hope).
