  1.   About Printer's Daemon

  4.   Welcome to Printer's Daemon, Shareware Version 1.10S!  Printer's Daemon is
  5.   a drag & drop text file printing utility for Microsoft Windows, Version 
  6.   3.1 or later. (Sorry, this application will not work with Windows 3.0 or 
  7.   earlier.)  Printer's Daemon appears as an icon on the Desktop.  Select one
  8.   or more text file names in the Windows File Manager. Drag the names to the 
  9.   Printer's Daemon icon, and the files will be printed on the default Windows
  10.   printer.  Options for Printer's Daemon are accessed by clicking on the 
  11.   icon and selecting an item from the System Menu.

  14.   Installation

  17.   The archive file you extracted, PDEMON.ZIP, contains this file 
  18.   and the file PDV110S.ZIP. Copy PDV110S.ZIP to a temporary directory, 
  19.   and "unzip" it.  It will create the following files:

  28.   Copy PDAEMON.EXE to your Microsoft Windows default directory, normally
  29.   named \WINDOWS. SUBEZ.VBX and CMDIALOG.VBX are support files for Printer's 
  30.   Daemon; copy them to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. We recommend the use
  31.   of the Windows File Manager for these tasks, and would NOT overwrite files
  32.   of the same name but with later dates.

  34.   One additional support file is required to use Printer's Daemon Version
  35.   1.10S:   VBRUN300.DLL, the runtime module for Visual Basic 3.0. If you run
  36.   any other Visual Basic 3.0 programs, you have this file, probably in your
  37.   \WINDOWS or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Otherwise, VBRUN300.DLL is 
  38.   available from the same BBS, on-line system or software distributor where
  39.   you obtained PDEMON.EXE.

  41.   To execute Printer's Daemon, add its icon to a Program Manager Program 
  42.   Group, or click on PDAEMON.EXE in File Manager.

  45.   NOTES ABOUT THIS VERSION
  46.   ------------------------

  48.   1.  ABOUT THE ICON - We are not promoting Satanism with this design, and
  49.       we're sorry if it offends anyone.  We believe that icons should be 
  50.       distinctive, and the VB Expressions Desktop Assistants all look back 
  51.       at their "bosses".  (Look for Draggin' Viewer and Trash Free-K!) For
  52.       the record, in Unix-land, a "daemon" is a disconnected process that 
  53.       offers utility services, such as printing and mail.  And, in the 
  54.       printing industry, a "printer's devil" is an errand boy, especially
  55.       one who takes the printed sheets off the press.  Pretty natural, huh?

  57.   2.  Printer's Daemon is a drag & drop client.  The Windows File Manager is
  58.       the most available drag & drop server.  Printer's Daemon gives you the
  59.       option to start File Manager with the Printer's Daemon application. 
  60.       Printer's Daemon defaults to start up the File Manager; to change 
  61.       this option, uncheck the "Start File Manager" option in the Printer's 
  62.       Daemon System Menu. Printer's Daemon will store the last setting of
  63.       "Start File Manager" when closed normally in the file PDAEMON.INI and
  64.       restore the setting when restarted. Turning off your computer before 
  65.       exiting Windows is bad computer hygiene!

  67.   3.  Printer's Daemon initially defaults to "Always On Top" mode. This keeps
  68.       it visible when another window covers it.  If you are annoyed by holes
  69.       in your maximized documents, toggle "Always On Top" off by clicking
  70.       the system menu option.  Printer's Daemon will also store the last 
  71.       setting of "Always On Top" in the file PDAEMON.INI, and restore it
  72.       on start-up.

  74.   4.  Printer's Daemon initially defaults to the "Courier New" TrueType
  75.       font.  You can select a different font by clicking on "Select Font..."
  76.       in the System Menu.  Printer's Daemon will store the selection in 
  77.       the PDAEMON.INI file, and restore the choice when you restart 
  78.       Printer's Daemon.  Hint: most text files (like this one) look more 
  79.       "natural" printed in a fixed character font like "Courier New" rather
  80.       than proportional fonts like "Arial".

  82.   5.  You can choose a different printer, orientation or paper size by
  83.       clicking "Printer Setup..." in the System Menu.  This choice becomes
  84.       the new Windows Default Printer.
  85.  
  86.   6.  Printer's Daemon checks the first 128 characters of your files 
  87.       for non-printable characters. If it detects any, Printer's Daemon
  88.       will warn you, and ask if you want to continue.  VB Expressions takes
  89.       no responsibility for the results of ANY file being dropped into your
  90.       printer queue.

  92.       Better to be sure it's text before you try to print! (There's where
  93.       Draggin' Viewer can help!)

  95.   7.  Close Printer's Daemon by clicking on "Close" from the system menu.

  97.   8.  Help can be obtained by selecting "Help..." from the system menu.
  98.  
  99.   9.  The Postscript printer driver that shipped with Windows 3.1 is buggy!
  100.       If you have problems with the first letters in each sentence being
  101.       cut off when printing with Printer's Daemon on a Postscript printer, 
  102.       check the "About..." button for the Postscript printer driver in the 
  103.       Control Panel (after clicking on "Setup..."). The defective driver is
  104.       Version 3.50. The PSCRIPT.DRV file in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory is 
  105.       dated 3/10/92.  It will not work properly with Printer's Daemon!  To
  106.       obtain an updated driver, call Microsoft or your printer manufacturer.
  107.       You can also download new drivers from the MSL Forum on CompuServe.
  108.       Version 3.51 and Version 3.55 have been shown to work with Printer's
  109.       Daemon.

  123.  You can also look for other VB Expressions utilities: additional Desktop 
  124.  Assistants (like Printer's Daemon) include Draggin' Viewer, a drag-and-drop
  125.  file viewing and editing utility, and Trash Free-K!, a drag-and-drop file 
  126.  deletion utility. Smartclp is a Windows Clipboard enhancer, PM Fonts allows
  127.  you to change your Program Manager fonts from the Microsoft default to any
  128.  installed screen font and PM Group Sorter allows you to set the order of
  129.  your Program Manager Groups. Good stuff (if we may say so ourselves!)
