  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with version
  4. 3.1 of Almanac for Windows NT.  Topics discussed in

  15. REGISTRATION
  16. ------------
  17. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  18. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  19. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  20.  
  21. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  22. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  23. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  24. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  25. shareware.
  26.  
  27. Complete information on how to register Almanac
  28. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
  29.  
  30.  
  31. COMPATIBILITY
  32. -------------
  33. This version of Almanac has been specifically
  34. created for use with Windows NT.
  35.  
  36. If you are running standard Windows, a 16-bit
  37. version of Almanac is available from Impact
  38. Software.
  39.  
  40.  
  41. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.1 for the WINDOWS NT O/S
  42. ---------------------------------------------
  43. Almanac should be installed while running under
  44. the logon ID of the Almanac user.  Configuration
  45. information is maintained for the user in their
  46. area of the system registry.
  47.  
  48. Although this is the recommended approach to
  49. installation, you may have a specific need to
  50. install Almanac as Common system.  For example,
  51. if Almanac is maintaining an office schedule in
  52. a factory that operates multiple shifts, you may
  53. want the clerk for each shift to share the same
  54. Almanac system.  In this case, install Almanac
  55. for each user and specify the same target
  56. directory.  You may safely add users later -
  57. SETUP will not overwrite any existing data files.
  58.  
  59. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  60. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  61. You should place all of the files included in the release
  62. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  63. your hard drive.
  64.  
  65. SETUP requires about 500K bytes to complete the
  66. installation of Almanac for Windows NT.
  67.  
  68. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  69. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager.  Enter
  70. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  71. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  72. (for example, A:\SETUP).  Select "OK".
  73.  
  74. 1. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  75.    date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  76.    will not operate correctly if your computer is not set
  77.    to the correct date.
  78.  
  79. 2. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
  80.    Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
  81.    drives and paths for your install.  SETUP initially
  82.    sets these values for you so that you can just click
  83.    the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
  84.  
  85.    If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  86.    SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
  87.    to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  88.  
  89. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete.
  90.  
  91. If your Windows installation is configured for French,
  92. German, or Spanish language, or if you would like to
  93. customize Almanac for another foreign language, please
  94. read the following section.

  97. FOREIGN LANGUAGE OPTION
  98. -----------------------
  99. Although it would be difficult for us to create and
  100. distribute our shareware in multiple languages, it is
  101. important to try to meet the needs of the many
  102. customers who would enjoy such a capability.  Almanac
  103. 3.1 has been designed to provide the option of
  104. customizing the text that appears on the menu as well
  105. as the text of calendar displays and prints.
  106.  
  107. Almanac 3.1 will look for the file ALMSTR.TXT in the
  108. directory that it is executed from.  This file contains
  109. the foreign language equivalents for specific text that
  110. is used on Almanac's menus and displays.
  111.  
  112. If your Windows installation is configured for either
  113. the French, German, or Spanish language, Almanac's
  114. SETUP utility will ask you if you would like it to
  115. install the appropriate language information for
  116. you.
  117.  
  118. If you are running any other language than these or
  119. English, SETUP will direct you here for more
  120. information.
  121.  
  122. You can build your own ALMSTR.TXT file by first
  123. copying the ALMSTR.TXT file from your release disk
  124. into your Almanac directory.  (SETUP does not
  125. install this file - you should only copy it from
  126. the release package onto your hard disk if you
  127. intend to customize Almanac for a language other
  128. than English.)  This file is a sample language
  129. template that contains the English text used in
  130. Almanac's menus and displays.  You can edit this
  131. file with Windows NOTEPAD or other ASCII text
  132. editor, replacing the English text with the
  133. appropriate text of the language you would like.
  134.  
  135. It is important that you do not add or delete
  136. any lines from this file.  Each line of the
  137. file contains text that Almanac will substitute
  138. for a specific area in the program.
  139.  
  140. Menu items contain an ampersand (&) character
  141. in front of the letter of the text that will
  142. be underlined and used for Alt-key selection.
  143. Hot keys, such as Ctrl-P for File.Print
  144. cannot be changed from their English derived
  145. defaults.
  146.  
  147. Any line that contains the text "Reserved"
  148. is not used by this version of Almanac.  Do
  149. not delete any lines marked "Reserved" as
  150. this will cause any following lines to be
  151. incorrectly substituted within Almanac.
  152.  
  153. Almanac will automatically use the new text in
  154. ALMSTR.TXT the next time it is executed.  Be
  155. careful to leave the first line of ALMSTR.TXT
  156. unchanged.  This contains the major and minor
  157. version of Almanac so that later versions can
  158. avoid using the file if changes to the contents
  159. of the file must be made.
  160.

  162. like to send us, as well as any corrections that
  163. you think we should make to the files we are
  164. distributing!

  176.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  177.  
  178.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  179.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  180.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use
  181.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  182.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  183.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  184.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  185.  strictly prohibited.

  187.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  188.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  189.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  190.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  191.  
  192.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files
  193.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  194.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  195.  
  196.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac
  197.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  198.  limitations, and also the following:
  199.  
  200.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be
  201.         distributed in unmodified form, complete with the
  202.         file containing this license information.
  203.  
  204.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  205.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  206.         from Impact Software.
  207.  
  208.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  209.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  210.  
  211.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  212.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  213.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  214.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  215.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  216.            charge for the download of Almanac.
  217.  
  218.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  219.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  220.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  221.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  222.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  223.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  224.            details (enclose your catalog).

  226.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  227.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to
  228.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  229.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  230.            not to exceed five dollars.
  231.  
  232.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  233.  
  234.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  235.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  236.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  237.   purchase.
  238.  
  239.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  240.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  241.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  242.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  243.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  244.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  245.  
  246.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  247.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  248.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  249.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  250.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  251.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  252.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  253.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  254.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER

  256.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS

  258.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  259.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  261.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  262.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  263.   contents.
