MAKEWILD TIPS
Here are some tips about using MAKEWILD for the first
time in setting up your board:
Follow the instructions in the manual: but be alert
to the following:
GENERAL INFORMATION PART I
6. Set number of conferences at 1000. This way
you can block off certain areas for conferences
with the same theme.
7. Give yourself about 10 more file areas than
you need. Unfortunately there is no way to move
file areas, you simply have to add on to the
bottom.
8. External doors. Give yourself about 6 more
than you currently have. For future expansion
sake.
12. Make this path read: C:\WC30\WCWORK\NODE1
GENERAL INFORMATION PART II
3,4 should be N and Y, respectively. You want to
swap out on DOORS and Menu Hooks.
6. Hold overlay in EMS - Yes , if you have
EMS.
8. Default number of lines 23.
10. YES - this automatically generates filebase
keywords, so the user doesn't have to fill them
in manually.
11. YES Don't be sloppy and have your menu
screens scroll and run into each other on the
screen.
12. YES - take modem off hook on exit...so that
if someone calls when the board is off it will
get a busy signal instead of continuous ringing
(which happens when you drop to dos from the Idle
Screen, by the way!)
16. YES Have this on - if you have a quotes.bbs
file in your DISP directory.
GENERAL INFORMATION - PART III
2. If YES, this means that a file called from the
security profile for that level is displayed: it
has whatever name you give it in the Security
Profile section. This means that every time this
sec level logs on THIS FILE is the first thing
they will see. It is good for communicating
messages to users in a given level.
4. FIREWORKS are the coolest!
7. You can force the bulletin menu if you want,
so that in logging on the user has to at least
pass by the first screen .... or you can answer
YES here which makes the bulletins menu optional.
9. It is best for event management later on to
have this set at military time eg. 1800.
SECURITY INFORMATION
1. OPEN means open to the general public. CLOSED
is another option, which means only people who
are already logged on, can get on. They have to
contact you first, in other words, to belong to
your board.
2. If YES, then those with MASTER SYSOP access
can DROP to DOS on their remote system. THis is
good if you call in long distance and need to get
to DOS to manipulate files on your system. The
DOORWAY program is needed to to this though.
DON'T LET ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS POWER....your
entire system is at the hands of those with this
access.
MODEM DEFINITION - PART I
All of this needs to be configured with the proper
.mdm file. Run WCMODEM from the Home Directory
and this will automatically be configured for
you. If you are running a 14.4K modem be sure to
lock the baud rate at 19200 (#6).
MODEM DEFINITION - PART II
This too, is part of the general config for your
modem gotten by running WCMODEM and selecting
your brand of modem. If you have any problems,
call your mentor!!!
EXTERNAL PROTOCOLS
Wildcat really doesn't need to use any, as all of
the protocols are built in!
MAIN MENU DEFINITION
The only thing that needs changing here is one of
the hooks if your have a Time Bank Door and want
it to run from the Main Menu. Edit the HOOK 1 to
read T for Time Bank Door, then fill in the
name and the lowest security level to access the
door. You will need to make a MAIN1.RUN (bat
file) and put it in your NODE 1 directory.
To operate an autocallback verifier from the Main
Menu you would use HOOK 2 and name it A for Auto
Callback Verifier. Give it a security level of 1
since you want the newuser to be able to use it.
Make a MAIN2.RUN file and put it in the NODE 1
directory. The directions on how to do this are
clear in the User Manual.
MESSAGE MENU DEFINITION
This stays pretty much as it is: you can plug in
two HOOKS here as well, but I can't think of a
reason for them right now! The only letter
change would be T for D or vice versa for the
TOMCAT MAIL DOOR. It could be D for DOWNLOAD
TOMACAT MAIL - this is the way it is on my board.
But I have seen it T as well.
FILE MENU
This stays generally as it is. There are hooks
here too, but I can't think of a reason to use
them as of this writing.
SYSOP MENU DEFINITION
This stays generally the same.
SECURITY PROFILE DEFINITION
This is an all important part of MAKEWILD.
BEFORE YOU GET ANY USERS preset your security
levels. You don't have to keep them at WC30 or
WC40 etc. You can give them regular names like
FULLUSER, REGULAR, TEEN, ADULT.
This is the place to toggle on the restrictions
to DOORS, CONFERENCES and FILES (UPLOAD &
DOWNLOAD ACCESS). Wildcat has airtight security,
if these things are set correctly. This is also
where you can activated FAST LOG-ON - this allows
users who use *USER NAME to go straight to the
Main Menu, bypassing all of the opening screens;
and !USER NAME, straight to the TOMCAT MAIL DOOR.
This can be used as an incentive to get people to
donate to the board....only give this feature to
those who contribute!
You can have practically as many security levels
as you want, up to a thousand or so, I believe.
I have about 30 right now on my board, a lot of
them are clones of each other, with subtle
differences for different purposes - those who
contribute just a little more than someone else,
gets a little more privileges.
You can also set daily time limits here. You can
set it so a certain call gets a restricted amount
of time, but the total time for the day is twice
that or more. Or you can simply make the daily
limit also the call limit - which is what I do,
meaning when the time is up, it is up for the
whole day!
This is the place to name to Security display
file name...a .BBS extension is automatically
added to what you put here, and that is what is
displayed when that level logs on!
There is a copy feature where the level can be
copied, which makes it easy to clone levels and
then make the subtle differences to them.
FILE AREA DEFINITION
After creating the empty file areas by giving the
number of file areas in GENERAL INFORMATION PART
I - now you simply highlight each area and then
hit enter, which will give you a pop-up screen
and two spaces to fill in blanks: the exact name
of the file area as you want it to appear on the
File Menu Listing; and also the exact path to
where the files in that directory are stored on
the hard drive.
e.g.
File Area Name: DOS Utilities
File Area Path: C:\WC30\DOS-UTIL\
The trailing backslash is necessary at the end.
Back at the highlighted area, if you hit F2, you
will be able to set flags for upload security,
download security and conference security for
each file area. The upload security means:
which security access level do you want to have
permission to upload to this particular area.
Generally I reserve the right to upload anywhere
on the board to myself, as Sysop. I like to see
who is uploading what before it goes on the
board. The download security: this mean which
levels do you want downloading from this
particular file area. Conference access: I have
ALL of my flagged on! (ALT-S) This means that no
matter what conference you are in you will be
able to download this file from the File Menu.
Unless of course you have the board set up where
File Areas match the Conferences. That is a
whole other ballgame.
CONFERENCE DEFINITION
This is where it is important to have a LOT OF
SPACE to play around with. That is why I
recommend having 1000 conferences created in
GENERAL INFORMATION PART I. Give yourself ROOM
TO EXPAND.
I have Conference 0 as a General Post Office and
Conference 1 as Private E-Mail. My next
conference however is number 100. 100-110 are
system related files. Then I go up to 150 where
there are a few on UReVU: restaurants, movies
etc. Then we go up to 200 where there are a few
on Computer Related Topics, etc. then on to 250.
This leave big gaps in between each grouping for
future expansion. When the listing appears on
the screen there are no gaps, but there are
groups of conferences in the same number range.
This is much better than bunching everything all
together, then suddenly realizing that you are
forced to put something in space 75 that should
really have been squeezed in at the 25 mark.
After highlighting the numbered conference you
are present with a screen which asks information
from you, like: Conference name as it will appear
on the listing, the conference sysop: here I put
my name, as sysop, in ALL the conferences,
because no matter what conference a user is in,
when he writes a message to the Sysop he intends
it to go to ME! and not the conference Sysop who
might happen to be a co-sysop: if HIS name is in
there, I will never get the message, he will and
he will wonder what is going on.......so it is
easier all around for me to put MY name is all of
them! Maximum number of messages! here is a
place to put a ceiling on the volume of messages
in a given conference. Only allow 50 messages,
say, in a given, conference, then at 51, it will
erase #1 etc. to make room...... This is for lazy
sysops and co-sysops who don't like to clean out
conferences. THere is nothing worse than having
year old messages in a conference though!
Number of questionnaires has to be set in EACH
conference for the same total amount that you
actually have. If you have 20 questionnaires
available on your Questionnaire Menu, or at
least potentially will have, then put 20 in EACH
conference on the board! This is just the way it
works!
The same goes for # of bulletins, I have 300. So
I put 300 in EACH conference. This would be a
way to allow certain bulletins for certain
levels, though, if you wanted to take the time to
do it!
TOGGLES: Allow message attachments to messages.
THis should be set to yes....which would allow
the user to attach a file to his/her message.
Prompt to kill messages: should be set at YES,
for space sake on the board: if a message is no
longer needed it should be deleted to make space
for an active message. Force all messages
private: only conferences where it is expected to
have mail private should this be toggled: like
Private E-Mail Conference; and individual mail
conferences.
DOOR DEFINITION
THis doesn't do a darn thing except the names of
the doors!
IDLE SCREEN DEFINITION
There are two hooks here: one to enter MAKEWILD
for read-only purposes; the second to activate
the WCPRO Program, which does not come with WC
but can be purchased separately. WCPRO is a
sophisticated statistical program to manipulate
all of the databases, and generate reports on
them. I have it and use it a lot! Makes life
easier! I recommend it! Get it from MSI!
