CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION
1.1 Hardware Requirements
To install The Last Byte Memory Manager, your computer must have
a means of providing read-write memory in the Upper Memory Area
between 640k and 1 megabyte. This is possible if you have any
of the following, listed in order of preference:
o One of the shadow ram memory controller chips
listed in this document, or
o An expanded memory board (EEMS, LIM 3.2 EMS, or LIM
4.0 EMS), or
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ NOTE: Using a LIM 3.2 EMS board is not advised │
│ as a method of providing upper memory. It pro- │
│ vides only 64k of upper memory and prevents ap- │
│ plication software from using expanded memory. │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
o Fixed RAM memory already resident in the upper area
(such as the 32-bit "Built In Memory" installed in
some Compaq 386 machines), or
o A 386sx, 386, 486, or 486sx processor and the
Microsoft Windows 3.0/3.1 or DOS 5 versions of
EMM386.
1.2 Checking Compatibility Using CHIPSET
CHIPSET is a program that attempts to determine if your computer
has one of the memory controllers required to use The Last Byte
Memory Manager. To run CHIPSET, simply enter its name on the
command line:
A>CHIPSET
and follow the prompts. CHIPSET will try to identify the
particular memory controller you have, if any. If it can't find
a memory controller, it will look for fixed memory in the upper
area or expanded memory as a means of installing The Last Byte
Memory Manager. If it is successful, it will give you the
option of automatically linking to the INSTALL program to setup
for use of The Last Byte Memory Manager.
CHIPSET automatically senses whether you have a color or

monochrome display to determine how to present data on the
screen. However, you may force the mode by using one of the
command line options: /MONO or /COLOR (for monochrome liquid
crystal displays).
If your computer has one of the listed devices, then The Last
Byte Memory Manager should work on your computer.
1.3 Supported Chipsets
Key Software Products is continually adding support for new
chipsets as they become known to us and technical information
can be obtained. Those that are currently supported in version
2.40 are listed in the paragraphs below. Some that we know of,
but which cannot be supported are listed near the end of this
document.
In what follows, you will occassionally see "+32k" appended to
the end of the total amount of shadow ram indicated for a
particular chipset. This means that there is additional shadow
ram in the F000-FFFF region, but that it is read-only; however,
if you have a VGA or EGA adapter and a "split" bios, you may be
able to gain up to an additional 32k by using the MOVE=OVERLAY
option of LASTBYTE.SYS.
An adapter card (like some disk controllers) that uses a portion
of the upper memory address space usually requires that shadow
ram in the same address space be disabled. Thus shadow ram is
usually organized into segments that can be individually enabled
or disabled. Even though an adapter may only use a small
portion of one shadow ram segment, the entire segment must be
disabled. How this affects your system can be determined by the
information under the columns labelled "Organization".

1.3.3 AddTech Research (PCChip)
AddTech chipsets are usually labelled "PCChip" or "Hedaka".
AddTech designs their chips for use on their own motherboards,
and they identify their chipsets by the motherboard part
numbers. There is at least one AddTech chipset that is used on
two different motherboards with different motherboard part
numbers. To avoid confusion, The Last Byte Memory Manager
refers to these chips using "PCCHIP" followed by a unique
number.

The 84021 provides up to 384k of memory, but any of the first
two and last two 64k blocks might be "locked" and unavailable
due to the design of your particular bios. This may reduce the
amount of memory from 384k to as little as 128k.

1.4 Unsupported Chipsets
If your computer has shadow ram capability, then it probably has
a shadow ram memory controller. However, some of these chipsets
cannot be supported by The Last Byte Memory Manager for reasons
shown below.
Some of these chips, however, do have hardware EMS support and
thus many of their motherboards come with an EMS device driver
designed specifically to take advantage of this capability. So
in many cases, you can install this driver first, and then The
Last Byte Memory Manager can use it to manage the upper memory
area.
1.4.1 No Shadow Ram Support
Some of the older chipsets do not provide shadow ram
capability.
Examples: VLSI Technologies 82C100 series
Western Digital chipsets
Texas Instruments TACT82300 series
Early Suntac chipsets (ST62BC001-6)
United Microelectronics Corp. UM82C231
1.4.2 Shadow Ram is not Read/Write
Some chipsets have shadow ram, but can only put it into either
write-only mode (for copying rom contents to ram), or read-only
mode (to prevent accidental writes into what's supposed to be a
copy of rom). The hardware EMS in some such chipsets sometimes
provides a limited amount (e.g., 64k) of Hi-DOS memory, but only
if the user doesn't need expanded memory.
Examples: CONTAQ 82C591 (no hardware EMS support)
Headland/G2 (many do have hardware EMS however)
ACC Microelectronics (many do have hardware EMS)
USA Integration (USAi) (no hardware EMS)
1.4.3 Overly Complex Control
The Last Byte Memory Manager software is table-driven, making it
relatively easy to adapt to different memory controller
architectures, but there are limits!
Examples: Zymos/Appian System 90 chipset

Silicon Integrated System (SiS) 85C310.
1.4.4 Locked Configuration Registers
Some memory controllers are designed so that they can be
"locked" at the end of the main bios initialization, requiring a
hardware reset to unlock, and thus preventing The Last Byte
Memory Manager from accessing the controller.
Examples: Intel 82335, 82335SX
1.4.5 Configuration I/O Ports Reassigned
Some memory controllers are designed so that the "index/data"
pair of I/O ports used to access the configuration registers can
be reassigned to different I/O addresses. This makes the
configuration registers effectively inaccessible to The Last
Byte Memory Manager since it has no way of knowing what new I/O
port addresses may have been established within the main bios.
Examples: Texas Instruments TACT84500
GS Technology GS62CS03
