WHAT'S NEW
Version 3.25 has had added to it the information concerning registration by
credit card using the Public (software) Libary. A problem has been corrected
which occurred occasionally as a result of a memory conflict in returning to
the 50 line hi-res screen from a help call. An immediate refusal to proceed
with the further narrowing of a search once no "hits" remain has been added to
the search screen.
The only changes to version 3.24 are those necessary to permit the system to
run from read-only media such as a CD ROM. To run that way, the current
directory must be one with write access and the ROM directory must be in the
path, or appended with the APPEND drive:\dir /X:ON /PATH:ON command. If running
a registered version from read-only media the LICENCE.PGF file (the "key file")
should be in the current directory where it will override the (unregistered)
one on the ROM.
Different STOPWORD and DELIMIT files may also be included in the current
directory to override those on the ROM.
LAN use from a shared read-only drive or directory may be achieved by treating
the directory as a ROM.
Racontex 3.23 differed from 3.1 in only a few ways. A few bugs have been fixed
and the display routine has been altered so that pressing => at the last
occurrence of a search criterion no longer returns you automatically to the
"search criterion" screen, you have to press ESC to get back.
Racontex now runs under WINDOWS, using a single screen for user dialog. It
also still runs under DOS.
Association of Shareware Professionals documentation has been added to this
release, but apart from minor changes to the Registration Reminder Screen to
comply with ASP requirements there has been no chnage in function to what is
now a very stable program.
DOS 4.01 is not fully compatible with earlier versions of DOS and many programs
have had to be revised to work with it. Racontex is one of them, and version
3.23 will work with DOS 4.01, 5.0 and 6.0 as well as with previous versions.
The program may now be navigated using a mouse, as well as the keyboard.
The main addition is WordPerfect 5.1 support in the search program. When the
[P] option is used to write to a WordPerfect file, version 3.1 wrote in
WordPerfect 4.2 format, which WordPerfect 5.0 automatically converted.
WordPerfect 5.1 does not, but it will read WordPerfect 5.0 files. Racontex now
writes as a default in WordPerfect 5.0 format. If you only have WordPerfect
version 4.2 you may still obtain files it can read by putting the option /WP42
on the command line when starting RACONTEX.
Virtually all of the major word processors will read WordPerfect 5.0 files
successfully, including MicroSoft Word for Windows.
Since Racontex appends to a file if you give it the name of an existing
file, it now checks the file type and if the file is written in WP 5.0 or 5.1
it writes in that format, even if the /WP42 option is set. If the file is in
WP 4.2 format it writes in that format even if /WP42 is not set.
Printer and File export has been expanded so that all pages of a document, or
all pages matching the search criteria may be exported (previously only the
currently displayed page could be exported for each key press).
To aid in protecting proprietary information published in Racontex form, an
option has been added which makes a database "non-portable" (illicit copies
won't work) and limits file export to the current page.
The REGISTER program makes possible registration by the use of a "registration
number" which may be given by telephone or other means, principally intended to
allow the author to correct misspellings on the identification line of
registered copies.
The LOAD routine now operates on larger files (or breaks them into larger
pieces) which speeds up the load by 30% or so.
The limit on document size has been raised from 8,000 pages to 16,000 pages.
If RACONTEX is invoked without a filename on the command line, it now presents
a menu of files it finds in the current subdirectory, and these may be selected
by mouse or arrow keys.
A new module RCNTXWIN.EXE is now included, which is a windows program. It
looks after all of the user dialogue, and runs the the other programs for you.
PIF files and an icon for RACONTEX are included. You start it by the command
WIN RCNTXWIN from the subdirectory in which you keep your RACONTEX files.
The delay in the "Commercial" screen for unregistered users has been reduced to
3 seconds from 5 seconds to comply with ASP requirements.
The INSTALL procedure now sets up on-line documentation, to be read within
RACONTEX, as a RACONTEX database.
