  1. Improvements in HyperRead Generator 5.0 over version 4.4:

  3. 1) HyperRead Generator can now create an encoded text file that makes
  4. editing existing HyperRead documents without destroying the links easy.
  5. This file is not the final ASCII file that is distributed, but a
  6. special file that can be edited in most word processors without
  7. destroying the HyperRead links and then converted back to a text file
  8. and HyperRead control file by HyperRead Generator.
  9. 2) HyperRead Generator now contains a built-in version of Document
  10. Cleaner, which converts most text files that are not compatible with
  11. HyperRead to a compatible format. If HyperRead Generator detects that
  12. the file contains control characters or has lines that exceed 79
  13. characters, it will offer to save the original text file with the BAK
  14. extension and create a new text file. The new file will have shortened
  15. lines (always broken at a space, of course), tabs will be converted to
  16. a series of spaces, control characters (except page feeds) will be
  17. removed, and optional left and right margins will be added to the text.
  18. 3) The <B>ack command listed on the bottom of the screen is now grayed
  19. out when you have not made any link jumps. This gives an easy visual
  20. guide to when you have backtracked to the bottom of your series of
  21. hypertext jumps.
  22. 4) When using the <S>earch function, the screen cursor now goes to the
  23. start of the search text in the line where it is found, instead of being
  24. at the start of the line as in previous versions.
  25. 5) When pressing keyboard keys, such as J or L, HyperRead Generator 5.0
  26. now responds even if you are holding down the Alt or Ctrl keys, even 
  27. though this is not necessary. It also responds to the Home and End keys
  28. while the Ctrl key is pressed, even though the Ctrl key is not necessary.
  29. This is done to increase compatibility with other text editor and word
  30. processor programs, since people who are in the habit of pressing the
  31. Alt or Ctrl keys while pressing hot keys sometimes get confused when
  32. HyperRead Generator does not respond when they press hot keys while
  33. holding down Alt or Ctrl.
  34. 6) When listing possible document files as new files to be hypertexted,
  35. HyperRead Generator 5.0 does not display some of the file names that
  36. are obviously not document files, such as EXE or COM files. It still
  37. lists any file that might remotely be a document file, meaning any file
  38. that it does not specifically recognize as another type of file.

  40. The HyperRead read-only module version 5.0 contains features 3, 4 and 5
  41. above. It is also 7 bytes smaller than HyperRead 4.4.

  43. Improvements in version 5.1 over 5.0:

  45. The HyperRead read-only module version 5.1 contains a new disk access
  46. routine that causes the document loading and most large movements
  47. within the document to take about 1/5th as long as with version 5.0.
  48. Unfortunately, version 5.1 is 333 bytes larger than version 5.0.

  50. HyperRead Generator 5.1 fixes a small bug in HyperRead Generator 5.0.
  51. The bug caused it to "lose" any HyperRead link to the first line of the
  52. document when you saved the file as an encoded text file and then
  53. converted this file back to a normal HyperRead file. This problem seldom
  54. surfaced, since links to the first line of the document are rare.
  55. Note: Because of this fix, encoded text files (ETF files) created by
  56. version 5.0 are not compatible with HyperRead Generator 5.1. 
  57. HyperRead Generator 5.1 is also faster in some aspects of disk reading
  58. than version 5.0, although the improvement is not as great as in the
  59. read-only module.
