  2. ** INTRODUCTION
  3.  
  4. README.TXT file for TNGEPLST.* and DS9EPLST.*.  Written by Blake 
  5. Nancarrow.  Read it!  Don't be lazy.  It'll only take a minute...
  6.  
  7. This file accompanies the Star Trek TNG and DS9 episode guides.  They are
  8. WordPerfect 5.1 documents.  The guides are meant to be small and portable,
  9. ideal for the coffee table.  They are fairly easy to print for yourself as
  10. long as you use an appropriate font but, MOST IMPORTANTLY, print their
  11. pages in the appropriate order.  This is particularly true if you do not
  12. have a duplex printer at your disposal.  Also, to assemble the guides, you
  13. will need a fairly large stapler (with a 4╝ inch reach)...  Finally, this 
  14. document has a graphic on the front page:  if your printer doesn't like 
  15. these graphics then suppress or delete them.
  16.  
  17. ** DUPLEX PRINTING
  18.  
  19. Originally, these documents were produced for an Epson dot-matrix printer.
  20. A lot of manual effort is required in printing them.  If you have a duplex
  21. printer, that is, one that can print automatically to both sides of a sheet
  22. of paper, then you can put all this technology to use.  New documents have
  23. been designed for printing on an Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IID or IIID
  24. duplex laser printer.  They look great on this printer *and* require
  25. considerably less effort on your part!
  26.  
  27. ** THE NUMBERS
  28.  
  29. The guides, in their final form, are 4¼ inches wide and 11 inches tall.
  30. This is achieved by folding normal 8½ by 11 inch paper in half across the
  31. length.  They are bound like a book with staples.
  32.  
  33. The Next Generation document is 14 pages in length;  Deep Space Nine is 6
  34. pages long.  When folded in half, in a booklet form, they have then twice
  35. as many "pages."  Before you print these files, ensure they are the correct
  36. length.  If your "small" printer font is too large, WordPerfect will
  37. automatically extend the document but this will adversely affect the paging
  38. in the guide.  DON'T PRINT THEM IF THEY ARE LONGER THAN 12 OR 6 PAGES.

  55. ** LOADING OR RETRIEVING
  56.  
  57. When you load any of these documents, you will likely receive a warning that 
  58. the printer driver is not found, "formatting for default printer."  This
  59. is a normal WordPerfect warning when you build a document with one
  60. printer but print using a WordPerfect that doesn't know about that
  61. printer.  Ignore this specific warning but be sure to check the fonts
  62. that WordPerfect uses in place of the ones I selected.  And, once again,
  63. preview the document to ensure it is the proper length.  See the notes
  64. below about changing the document and WordPerfect to work.
  65.  
  66. ** PRINTING ON A DUPLEX PRINTER
  67.  
  68. You can print your own copies quickly if you have the following:
  69.  
  70.         microcomputer
  71.         WordPerfect 5.1
  72.         a duplex printer such as an HP LaserJet IID or IIID 
  73.     decent fonts
  74.         20 sheets of nice paper
  75.         6 minutes
  76.  
  77. Load each document, adjust fonts if necessary, preview it, VERIFY THE
  78. LENGTH, and send it to print.  Simple, huh?
  79.  
  80. Arrange the pages in stardate order with the cover facing out.  Staple
  81. carefully on the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.
  82. Presto!
  83.  
  84. ** PRINTING ON A NON-DUPLEX PRINTER
  85.  
  86. You can still print copies if you have the following:
  87.  
  88.         microcomputer
  89.         WordPerfect 5.1
  90.         non-duplex printer such as an Epson LQ
  91.     some small fonts
  92.         20 sheets of nice paper
  93.         35 minutes
  94.  
  95. The Next Generation
  96. -------------------
  97.  
  98. Print the first 7 pages on one side of 7 pieces of paper.  Keep them in
  99. order!  Then print pages 8 through 14 on the opposite sides of these 7
  100. sheets.  Insert the sheets in the order that they were printed in the first
  101. run.  In other words, the WordPerfect page 8 is printed on the back of
  102. sheet 1, the WP page 9 on the back of sheet 2, et cetera.  Use the
  103. Multiple Pages command in the Print menu (M or 5) and enter "8-14" and
  104. press Enter.

  106. Arrange them in stardate with the cover facing out.  Staple carefully on
  107. the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.  See?

  109. Deep Space Nine
  110. ---------------
  111. Print pages 1 through 3.  Keep pages in order!  Send pages 4 through 6 to
  112. print.  Insert previously printed sheets in same order from first fun.
  113. WordPerfect's page 4 will print on back of sheet 1, WP page 5 will print on
  114. back of 2, etc.  Use the Multiple Pages command.

  116. Arrange into stardate order with cover facing out.  Staple careful along
  117. spine and fold in half.
  118.  
  119. ** OTHER PRINTERS
  120.  
  121. Obviously, you may not have these printers.  You can still print this
  122. document if you use fonts that are not too large.  The bulk of the document
  123. (particularly, each episode's description) is generated using the Epson's
  124. Roman font set to a horizontal pitch of 15 characters per inch.  The
  125. episode titles and stardate are printed in Roman 12 cpi.  The page header
  126. is in Sans Serif 12 cpi double-high.  The entire document is printed with a
  127. standard vertical pitch of 6 lines per inch.

  129. ** FONTS
  130.  
  131. In each of the documents, there are *some* specific fonts requested.  You
  132. may not have these available so some changes on your part may be necessary.
  133. The bulk of the document uses font size "attributes" however so as to
  134. minimize the impact of not having certain, esoteric fonts...
  135.  
  136. The episode description text is printed at a smaller size by using the
  137. "small" font attribute (selected via the Font [Ctrl-F8]|Size|Small command).
  138. By default, this is 80% the size of the normal font used by WordPerfect.
  139. If your "small" font is too large, you must select a smaller printer font.
  140. Do not attempt to replace the [SMALL] [small] print codes;  that is too
  141. difficult.
  142.  
  143. You can easily alter what WordPerfect interprets as small by
  144. using the command:  Setup [Shift-F1]|Initial Settings|Print Options|Size
  145. Attribute Ratios.  By default, this number is around 80%;  make it smaller,
  146. say 40 to 60%.
  147.  
  148. These settings are stored in the printer driver so it must be updated.
  149.  
  150. - go into the Print menu [Shift-F7]
  151. - select the Printer command (S)
  152. - highlight the printer for adjustment
  153. - select Update (U or 7)
  154.  
  155. The printer update is required if you do not have a Postscript printer.
  156.  
  157. ** GRAPHICS
  158.  
  159. A graphic of the Next Generation logo is included on the cover page of
  160. this guide.  If it does not print correctly on your printer, suppress
  161. the printing of graphics from the WordPerfect print menu.  Conversely,
  162. it you can print the graphic, ensure WordPerfect uses the highest 
  163. graphics quality.
  164.  
  165. - access the Print menu (Shift-F7)
  166. - select Graphics Quality (G)
  167. - set to not print (N or 1) or set to high quality (H)
  168.  
  169. ** CLOSING
  170.
