  18. This document discusses the use of Novell DOS 7 features with the
  19. OS/2 operating system.

  30. ISSUE
  31.  
  32.      Novell DOS 7 and OS/2 are compatible and will work well
  33.      together.  The compatibility of the full features of NOVELL
  34.      DOS 7 will be covered in this document.  OS/2 is a separate
  35.      operating system and uses a separate shell to operate DOS
  36.      applications.  Many of the features in NOVELL DOS can be run
  37.      under both operating systems; some will only work while
  38.      booted under NOVELL DOS.  Other features cannot be used
  39.      because of conflicts with OS/2, and any use of these
  40.      features should be with extreme caution.

  42.      Definitions:
  43.  
  44.      DOS Shell      The DOS shell provided with OS/2.  This DOS
  45.                     Shell is not Novell DOS 7 specific; although,
  46.                     it will use the EXTERNAL commands in the DOS
  47.                     PATH.
  48.  
  49.      Virtual Disk   This is the Virtual Disk Image feature of
  50.                     OS/2.   This is not to be confused with a RAM
  51.                     disk.

  54.      NOVELL DOS FEATURES
  55.  
  56.      DELWATCH       DELWATCH will not operate in a DOS shell
  57.                     under OS/2 but will operate on a Virtual
  58.                     Disk.
  59.  
  60.      DELPURGE       DELPURGE operates successfully in the DOS
  61.                     shell and on a Virtual Disk.
  62.  
  63.  
  64.      DISKMAP        DISKMAP operates successfully in the DOS
  65.                     shell and on a Virtual Disk.
  66.  
  67.      DISKOPT        DISKOPT operates successfully in the DOS
  68.                     shell and on a Virtual Disk; however, it is
  69.                     not recommended that you run DISKOPT in a
  70.                     multitasking environment.
  71.  
  72.      DPMS           DPMS will not operate in a DOS Shell or a
  73.                     Virtual Disk.
  74.  
  75.      PASSWORD       PASSWORD shows incorrect version of operating
  76.                     system in an OS/2 environment.  Novell DOS
  77.                     files and directories with passwords are not
  78.                     secure.
  79.  
  80.      NWCACHE        NWCache can be used under either operating
  81.                     system but will not provide any benefit while
  82.                     booted under OS/2.  OS/2 has its own cache,
  83.                     which makes NWCache unnecessary.  This
  84.                     feature should not be used on a Virtual Disk.
  85.  
  86.      SCRIPT         SCRIPT does not function in a DOS Shell or
  87.                     Virtual Disk.
  88.  
  89.      SECURITY       If Security is enabled, OS/2 WILL NOT boot
  90.                     under any circumstances.  Security should not
  91.                     be used.
  92.  
  93.      STACKER        Extended partitions of the hard disk can be
  94.                     compressed with Stacker while booted under
  95.                     Novell DOS 7.  These partitions can be read
  96.                     by OS/2 if Stacker for OS/2 is loaded in the
  97.                     OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file.  Applications on the
  98.                     compressed drive will be accessible while
  99.                     operating in either environment.  The Virtual
  100.                     Disk will need the driver and the STACKER.LOG
  101.                     to access the drive.  Novell recommends that
  102.                     you do not compress the boot drive, because
  103.                     it is very difficult to get both operating
  104.                     systems to recognize the partition.
  105.  
  106.      TASK MANAGER   TASK MANAGER will not operate in a DOS shell
  107.                     under OS/2.  OS/2 is a multitasking
  108.                     environment, so TASKMGR is unnecessary on the
  109.                     Virtual Disk.  Task Manager will operate in
  110.                     the Task Switcher mode.
  111.  
  112.      UNDELETE       UNDELETE will operate in a DOS shell under
  113.                     OS/2 and on a Virtual Disk.  Novell
  114.                     recommends that UNDELETE should not be
  115.                     operated in a multitasking environment.
  116.  
  117.      XCOPY, XDIR    Both XCOPY and XDIR function in a DOS shell
  118.                     and a Virtual Disk; however, caution should
  119.                     be used when copying or moving OS/2 files. 
  120.                     They carry extended attributes that are not
  121.                     transferred by DOS.  Copying or moving an
  122.                     OS/2 file without its extended attributes can
  123.                     result in lost functionality.

  126.      INTERNAL COMMANDS
  127.  
  128.      These commands are taken over by the OS/2 environment, so
  129.      they are no longer internal to Novell DOS.   For more
  130.      information on the internal commands for OS/2, Refer to your
  131.      OS/2 documentation.

  133.      VER       VER shows OS/2 in the OS/2 DOS shell but will show
  134.                Novell DOS 7 in Virtual Disk.

  137.      EXTERNAL COMMANDS
  138.  
  139.      The following Novell DOS external commands work with certain
  140.      exceptions:
  141.  
  142.      FORMAT    In FORMAT all switches, with the exception of /S,
  143.                function correctly.  The /S switch will cause the
  144.                system files to be copied; however, the disk will
  145.                not be bootable.
  146.  
  147.      TREE      TREE works fine in either environment but provides
  148.                statistics in a different format than the OS/2
  149.                version.
  150.  
  151.      EDITOR    EDITOR works fine in the DOS shell but has
  152.                different features than EDLIN.
  153.  
  154.      MEM       MEM works in DOS shell but provides statistics in
  155.                a different format than the OS/2 Version.  The /A
  156.                /U switch will cause the session to hang because
  157.                of an upper memory conflict.
  158.  
  159.      SYS       SYS copies the system files for Novell DOS;
  160.                however, the disk is not bootable.  SYS does work
  161.                in Virtual Disk but takes the files from the disk
  162.                image rather than the hard disk.

  164.      The following external commands are included with OS/2 and
  165.      should be used when in the OS/2 environment:

  167.      CHKDSK.COM, FORMAT.COM, MODE.COM, XCOPY.EXE, DISKCOPY.COM,
  168.      DISKCOMP.COM, REPLACE.EXE, COMP.COM, MORE.COM, PRINT.COM,
  169.      FIND.EXE, KEYB.COM, BACKUP.EXE, FDISK.COM, RECOVER.COM,
  170.      LABEL.COM, TREE.COM, SORT.EXE, UNDELETE.COM, ATTRIB.EXE,
  171.      RESTORE.EXE, MEM.EXE
  172.  
  173.      Other external commands have not been tested at this time. 
  174.      Refer to the OS/2 documentation for features that can be
  175.      used in OS/2 to avoid these conflicts.
