February 22, 1994 For Immediate Release Release No. 33
Jovanovski / Fichaud / Bêty / Quint Lead Respective Leagues After the
Fourth Segment of the 1993-94 Canadian Hockey League Valvoline Top
Draft Prospect Award Voting
Ed Jovanovski of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires, Éric Fichaud from the Chicoutimi
Saguenéens and Sébastien Bêty from the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Deron
Quint of the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds each lead their respective league in
voting after the fourth segment of the 1993-94 Canadian Hockey League
Valvoline Top Draft Prospect Award. This award is voted on each month during
the regular season by a panel of media members the three major junior leagues.
The results were announced today after each panelist was polled for the top
eight National Hockey League prospects as of now in the league in which he or
she covers.
Jovanovski was the only unanimous winner, picking up the maximum 32 points
which represented a first place vote on all four Ontario media ballots.
Fichaud and Bêty were tied in the Québec league with 25 points each while
Quint had 28 to edge out last segments winner Jeff Friesen by only one point.
Jovanovski has had an outstanding first two-thirds to his rookie season in the
OHL, after being selected second overall by the Spits in the 1993 OHL Priority
Selection. The 17-year-old Windsor, Ont. native has already established
himself as one of the top rearguards in the OHL and one of the top defensive
prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. A member of the Ontario/Western
Selects at the recently held CHL Chrysler Cup Challenge, the 6.03, 202 lb.
graduate of the Windsor Jr. B's has 11-27-38 point totals as well as 176
penalty minutes in just 49 games.
Jeff O'Neill, a sophomore centre with the Guelph Storm finished second in the
OHL voting for the second straight month after being first in each of the
first two segments. The King City, Ont. native is currently fifth in league
scoring with 34-67-101 point totals in just 53 games and is second in the
Ontario loop in assists. Owen Sound netminder Jamie Storr is third in the
OHL after back-stopping Canada to a gold-medal at the World Junior Hockey
Championships while Niagara Falls' Jason Bonsignore is 4th and North Bay's
Vitali Yachmenev 5th.
In just his second season in Chicoutimi, Fichaud has quickly become one of
the league's top puck-stoppers and a top goaltending candidate for next
summer's draft. Fichaud is currently fourth among QMJHL goaltenders with
a 3.25 GAA and an impressive .903 save percentage in 54 games. Appearing in
89% of the Sags 61 games to date this year, Fichaud currently leads the
Québec league in minutes played with 3,025, wins with 31 and saves with 1,684
and is one of the reasons why Chicoutimi is battling for top spot in the
Frank-Dilio Division.
Bêty, a promising your defenceman in his second season in Drummondville, was
selected by the Voltigeurs 5th overall in the 1992 QMJHL midget draft. The
6'2", 205 lb. Bêty is a St-Bernard, Qué. native. Finishing just one point
back of Fichaud and Bêty in the QMJHL voting this segment was Daniel Goneau
from the Laval Titan while Mathieu Dandenault from Sherbrooke was fourth.
Quint didn't take long in becoming one of the top WHL rearguards. The
Durham, New Hampshire native who played last year with Taber High School,
has 10-21-31 point totals in his first 49 Western league games. At 6'01,
185 lbs., the left-shot defenceman was recognized for his talents lately
when he was named to the Ontario/Western Selects squad in the CHL Chrysler
Cup Challenge.
Friesen had an outstanding first two-thirds this year and currently has
44-57-101 stat totals in just 54 games. Winner of the Toshiba Office
Products CHL Rookie-of-the-Year Award last year, Friesen was a member of
Canada's National Junior Team at the 1994 World Junior Hockey Championships,
also helping Canada capture the gold medal. The sophomore left winger is
currently sixth overall in WHL scoring despite missing six games while at
the World Juniors.
Three other top prospects, Ryan Smyth of the Moose Jaw Warriors, Jason Wiemer
from Portland and Spokane's Jason Podollan finished third, fourth and fifth
respectively in the WHL.
The media members were asked to evaluate players based on their overall skill
and ability and their changes of being chosen high in the upcoming NHL Entry
Draft. Players are not necessarily judged therefore, strictly on their
performance over the last month but on their overall potential. Only players
eligible for the 1994 NHL Entry Draft are able to compete for this award, that
being players born between January 1, 1974 and September 15, 1976 and not
already drafted by an NHL team, or signed as a free agent. Votes are
tabulated based on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 point system with 32 points being the
maximum that one player could receive.
Each month the committee's top eight selections will be released with the top
finisher from the league on the year-end ballot becoming that league's
representative at the CHL's National Awards Presentation, held during the
Memorial Cup festivities. From the three final nominees, an overall winner
will be chosen and presented with the Valvoline Top Draft Prospect Award.
Last year's overall winner was Alexandre Daigle of the Victoriaville Tigres,
who later was selected first overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1993 NHL
Entry Draft.
