CANADIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE ANNOUNCES THE CHOICE HOTELS CANADA
PERFORMERS-OF-THE-MONTH FOR JANUARY
Kevin Brown of the Detroit Jr. Red Wings, Michal Grosek from the Tacoma
Rockets and Matt Mullin of the Sudbury Wolves each received Choice Hotels
Canada Performers-of-the-Month honours in the Canadian Hockey League for
January.
Brown, a Mississauga, Ontario native recorded 13-18-31 totals in just 11
games this month including nine multiple point games to take over the lead
in the OHL scoring race and become the first OHL'er to hit the century-mark
this year. The Los Angeles Kings' 4th round draft choice in 1992 currently
has 42-58-100 point totals in just 43 games, one point up on Kingston's Keli
Corpse.
In January, Brown, who finished last season third in OHL scoring with 50-91-
141 totals, was named first star of the game three times as well as second
star twice and third star once in his 11 outings. On the year, Brown has 12
multiple-goal-games including three hat-tricks. He also has 11 power-play
goals, two short-handed tallies, five game winning goals and four insurance
markers to go along with 69 penalty minutes.
Each month this award is fiercely contested and January is no exception with
many players having exceptional stretches. Runner-ups for the player-of-the-
month in January included Craig Reichert of the Red Deer Rebels (13-16-29
totals in 14 games), Lonny Bohonos from the Portland Winter Hawks (13-17-30
in 12 contests), Verdun Collège Français star Jocelyn Langlois (10-16-26 in
11 games) and Sylvain Cloutier of the Guelph Storm who had 14-16-30 point
totals in 14 outings.
Mullin has emerged as one of the leading puck-stoppers in the OHL, a league
which has a bumper-crop of excellent netminders this year. The 19-year-old
Guelph, Ont. native moved over from Windsor in November and has compiled an
outstanding 2.71 GAA and a 13-4-2 win-loss-tie record in a Wolves uniform.
On the year, Mullin has a 3.26 GAA, which is second in the OHL, including
two shut-outs in 40 appearances.
During January, Mullin had seven wins in nine games giving up just 23 goals
for a 2.56 GAA.
Runner-up for the award in January was Jeff Calvert of the Tacoma Rockets.
In eight games, Calvert had a 2.25 GAA along with a 6-2-0 record in eight
games.
Grosek, a native of Vyskov, in the Czech Republic, started the year with the
NHL's Winnipeg Jets after being selected by them in the sixth round (145th
overall) in the 1993 Entry Draft. He was also selected by Tacoma in the 1993
CHL Import Player Draft (22nd overall) and joined the Rockets in December.
In his first full month in Tacoma during January, the 6'1", 183 lb. left
winger had stat totals of 14-12-26 in just 11 games. His month was
highlighted with a two-goal, six-point performance in a 7-5 win over Tri-City
on January 8th. During January he notched seven multiple point games and had
six power-play markers, five power-play assists, two assists on game winning
goals and one overtime game winning goal.
Grosek helped Tacoma post a 9-3-0 record during January which strengthened
their hold in third place in the WHL's West Division, seven points up on
fourth place Spokane and 13 back of Portland, who is in second.
Also considered for the rookie honours this month were Jamie Langenbrunner of
the Peterborough Petes, who had 7-14-21 totals in 11 games and Alexie Lojkin
from Chicoutimi, who was the QMJHL nominee for rookie-of-the-month for the
third time in four segments this year.
For their efforts the trio of winners will each receive an engraved trophy
compliments of Choice Hotels Canada as well as a weekend for two at any
Choice Hotels by Journey's End property in Canada. Each player will be
presented with their awards at an upcoming home game.
