  2. How many On-Line services are out there?

  4.      Many different numbers are tossed about yet no one seems to know
  5. for sure.
  6.  
  7.      On-Line services run the gamut from hobby BBS's to product 
  8. support, private corporate lines and public and private data searches.  
  9. These services include everything from Genie to Compuserve, from Bank 
  10. of New York to Dow Jones, from the Asymetrix Support BBS to The Exec-PC
  11. BBS. From The Well to the Firehouse BBS.

  13.      To raise the stakes a bit higher, how many BBS users are there?
  14. The numbers may be quite a surprise to anyone who has an interest.
  15. Commercial enterprises, publishing houses and direct marketers all have
  16. a stake in knowing the answers to these questions, and The Roy Hobbs
  17. is going to attempt to answer them.

  19.     The Roy Hobbs BBS, for more than three years bringing the  
  20. news and views to its Users each Day, is going to embark on a 
  21. project that is sure to raise some eyebrows and interest 
  22. a wide variety of people, the first comprehensive census of on-line 
  23. services ever undertaken.

  25.      Modeled after the United States' decennial census, we are going to
  26. take a snapshot of the BBS world on March 1, 1994. Just how we aim
  27. to accomplish this is why you are reading this now.

  29.      This is not a project that we have undertaken lightly. It is a 
  30. project that has been in the planning stages for quite some time, and 
  31. something that is going to require the cooperation of many separate 
  32. entities, all working together toward a common goal.

  34.      With the enclosed attachment I hope to briefly outline what you 
  35. can do to assist us in this endeavor. The results will be of benefit to
  36. us all. We thank you for your cooperation.

  38.      Moreover, we will assure you that the personal information that we 
  39. will ask of you will not be used for any commercial purposes whatsoever 
  40. and will be destroyed on June 1, 1994. It will only be used by the 
  41. staff of this Bpoard for statistical purposes in compiling the results of 
  42. Census '94 Questionnaires. Your personal name, phone number and home
  43. address will never appear published in any way shape or form.
