- RGGUEST -
v1.10
by : Dennis Joslin
What is it?
RGGUEST is a utility for Renegade BBS's to make it much easier to
have/keep up a "GUEST" account on your BBS. RGGUEST will reset the guest
users account each time you run it (recommended after each logoff).
Read on to see exactly what it does. RGGUEST allows you to configure the
guest user's amount of credits, password and time left online.
Is this shareware or freeware?
It's shareware. Send me what you think it's worth. If you
think it's worth a buck, send me a buck, if you think it's worth a
grand, then send me that (I'm expecting THAT any day now)! I'm not writing
programs to make a living or anything, but I don't believe in crippling
my programs if they are unregistered. At the end of this .DOC file is a
form you can print out and send to me for registration. With registration,
I'll call your BBS as proof that it's been recieved and take a look around,
and send you a new version if I've written one.
OK, how do I use it?
First of all, create an account for the guest user. Usually, a name
of "GUEST" is used, though you can use whatever name you want. It is advisable
to set this user's access levels to the following...
* 1) No Deletion
** 2) No Ratio/Filepoints
3) Video Emulation to AUTO-DETECT
4) Can't Post Messages
5) Can't Play "Door" Games
6) Can't Vote
7) Can't Upload
8) Can't use the Offline Mail Reader
* - This users "number of times logged on" will remain at ZERO in the user
editor. RGGUEST does this for a reason. If it didn't, the guest user
would be prompted for his/her birthdate after so many calls, this would
be undesireable.
** - Use this so that the guest user won't have to upload, usually, these
users will be on for support of some sort, and will not want to upload
files in order to d/l. RGGUEST, when run, will take the "download K
today" and add it to the "total downloaded K," and do the same for
"numbers of downloads," and "number of logons." This will prevent
limits from being imposed, such as "# of d/l's per day," "D/l K
limit for today," and "Times logged on today."
Here's what mine looks like.....

To configure RGGUEST, run it with CONFIG as a switch (RGGUEST CONFIG)
A screen will come up and ask you information. First, the path to your
USERS.DAT file (In your DATA directory). Next, fill in the REAL NAME of the
guest user (normally, "GUEST"). Then, it'll ask you for "Amount of credits
to give guest user. This serves two purposes, first of all, it makes sure
they have enough access to logon, and stay on for their amount of time (if you
have time based on a credit system), and it keeps them from losing credits
by sending email, etc. The DEBIT field will be reset to zero when run to keep
that from building up. After that, you'll be prompted for a PASSWORD for the
guest user. In case you get some moron on that decides it'll be funny to
change the guest users password, or he happens to log-on on the date it's time
to change the password, it'll be reset back to what you have specified as soon
as they log-off and RGGUEST is run.
That's it for configuration. Just run it now! Set it up in your
batch file to run after each user, or if you're feeling real ambitious, set
RG up to shell out and create a file when guest logs on (off the start-up
menu, or something, (i.e. ECHO LALALA >GUESTWAS.ON), and have your batch
file check for the existence of this file, and run only if it exists (and
then delete it).
-*- v.1.10 - Bug Fix, it set the number of calls to ZERO, when that happens,
Renegade asks for the birthdate. Now it sets it to ONE total
call and seems to be working correctly....should've test it some
more first....hehe....
