ARCHIVE DATABASE (Registered Version Only)
This function will archive your database files and store them in the
\ARCHVIE directory. This function should be used to minimize the
size of the database if you are running a very active system. Every
time you archive the database, BATS will set up a new database with
only the USER NAMES preserved allowing you to still maintain optimum
scanning and statistic totals. Archiving the database does not lose
any information, it simply stores it in a more compressed format.
The log scanner will also do this if it detects that the database is
reaching its limits. When the log scanner archives the database
automatically, it will create a semaphore file that BATS recognizes
when loading. If you ever accidentally archive the database, you
can restore it by unzipping the archive into the BATS directory.
The archive name will be the month and day of the first and last
call and the extension will be the year of the last call.
~~~
[1/2]
EXIT BATS
This will exit BATS and return you to DOS. ESC will also allow
you to return to DOS.
~~~
[1/3]
PURGE A USERS DATA
This will purge a user's account information from the DATABASE
and all entries pertaining to their account. It is real handy in
situations where you create a TEST USER just for purposes of seeing
if your system works correctly for new users. It will permanently
remove the information from the database, but will not in any way
affect the BBS.
~~~
[1/4]
VIEW ARCHIVED (Registered version only)
This will view an archived database that you may have created or
BATS created when the database became full. If BATS detects that
the database is getting too large, it will automatically archive
the database and then it will create a semaphore file informing BATS
what reason it had, so that when you load BATS the next time in user
interface mode, it will explain what has happened.
~~~
[1/6]
REGISTER BATS
BATS is not free, it is Shareware. The cost for using BATS is as
follows.
$12.00 for non-commercial
$19.00 for private-commercial (BBS's that charge)
$25.00 for commercial (BBS's used as support for a corporation)
For more information on cost please read BATS.DOC
This option will appear if you have not registered BATS, it will
allow you to fill out the questions required to create a
registration form, it wil then generate REGISTER.FRM in the current
directory. This should be printed out and mailed in with the amount
stated above. You may also use the form contained in BATS.DOC, but
this is to make it easier for me to read and for you to create.
~~~
[2/1]
VIEW CALLS TO SYSTEM
This will allow you to view all call activity on your system telling
you who called, their log on and off time, and their baud rate
connection.
Special to View Calls:
When you press ENTER on the highlighted call, BATS will then search
for that person's activity and allow you to view all activity for
that person on that day. This lets you see what someone did on a
specific day much easier than before.
~~~
[2/2]
VIEW CARRIER DROPS
This will allow you to view all carrier drops on your BBS by who and
when it happened. This is a good method to see who habitually hangs
up on the system. Keep in mind that many doors will allow the user
to log off and fool the BBS into thinking they dropped carrier.
~~~
[2/3]
VIEW DOOR ACTIVATED
This will allow you to view all external programs that the BBS logs
as being activated. BATS will track the name of the program executed,
the time it was executed and the user who executed it.
SPECIAL TO DOORS: You can have BATS rename certain strings and
IGNORE others making the database more readable. For more
information, please read the descriptions in ALASDOOR.LST and
IGNRDOOR.LST.
~~~
[2/4]
VIEW DOWNLOADS COMPLETED
This will allow you to view all downloads completed on the BBS by
who, when and what file was downloaded. This can be very helpful.
For example, if someone uploads an infected program to your system,
you can find out who downloaded it and inform them of the virus.
This part of BATS can be very helpful in determining who has
downloaded what.
~~~
[2/5]
VIEW INTERACTIVE EMSI SESSIONS
This will allow you to view all calls negotiated with the IEMSI logon
process. IEMSI is a logon system that is supported by many mailer
terminal programs and other terminal packages that allow the user to
call the system without having to press any keys until they reach the
main menu.
~~~
[2/6]
VIEW MESSAGES POSTED
This will allow you to view all messages posted by whom and what area
the were posted in. It lets you see what areas that users post in
the most.
~~~
[2/7]
VIEW PASSWORD FAILURES
This will allow you to view all password failures that have occurred
on your system, this allows you to see who may be a problem user or
whose account may be tampered with. BATS tracks the user name, the
password attempted, and the date-time of the failure.
~~~
[2/8]
VIEW QUESTIONNAIRES COMPLETED
This will allow you to view all questionnaires completed on the BBS
so you can always keep on top of the answers. BATS tracks the
questionnaire file name, the user name and the date-time of the
completion.
~~~
[2/9]
VIEW SYSOP PAGED
This will allow you to view all pages to the SysOp. BATS will track
the user who posted it, the reason they requested chat (if
available), if the page was answered and the date-time of the page.
This allows you to write the user a letter asking them what they
wanted if you like.
~~~
[2/10]
VIEW UPLOADS COMPLETED
This will allow you to view all file uploads to the BBS completed.
BATS will track the name of the file, the user who uploaded it and
the date-time of the upload. This is very helpful in determining
who has uploaded what without having to load the BBS, or other file
managers. It will also allow you to search for who uploaded that
nasty virus.
~~~
[2/11]
VIEW USER's ON FILE
This will allow you to view all users who have been tracked BY BATS.
This is in no way linked to the BBS user file and is independent of
it. The database tracks the name, first call, last call and their
security level on the LAST CALL. The nice thing about this is you
can always call up any user that may have been deleted from the BBS
because they did something wrong or they just stopped calling.
~~~
[3/1]
CATEGORY REPORT (Registered version only)
This will generate a report on one of the nine tracked
categories, to be output to the printer, or disk. It allows you to
see what has happened in the selected category since the database
has been tracking. Its good for looking over the BBS in your leisure
time.
~~~
[3/2]
DATABASE REPORT (Registered version only)
This will generate a report on the nine categories of the database,
to be output to the printer, or disk. It allows you to see what has
happened on the BBS in all of the categories for viewing in your
leisure time.
~~~
[3/3]
USER'S REPORT (Registered version only)
This will generate a report on a user's total system activity,
to be output to the printer, or disk. This allows you to see what a
particular user has done on the BBS if need ever arises to evaluate
him/her.
~~~
[3/5]
SYSTEM ACTIVITY GRAPH
This will display your system's activity as a graph. The graph
will always show at least ONE entry for each category to prevent
any problems with the average computations. It allows you to see
the overall activity of the BBS in a graphical format.
~~~
[3/7]
USER FILE STATISTICS
This will tell you the total users tracked, and total slots
available. It lets you look at how full your database is. You
should always have around 25% of your slots free, and it should
never become 90% full, if this happens, you should increase the
size of your user file by using BATSINIT. If this ever occurs, you
need to manually back up the database and start over new, you
cannot change the SIZE of the user file without replacing it,
and all of the databases are linked to this file as an index.
~~~
[3/8]
DATABASE STATISTICS
This will tell you the total number or entries in the nine
categories BATS tracks. If any entry exceeds 30,000 BATS will
automatically archive the database the next time it scans and
starts a fresh one, but USERBATS.DAT will not be lost.
~~~
[3/9]
AVERAGE STATISTICS
This will tell you the average statistics for the nine categories
per total users and calls. It lets you know the average activity
per call and per user.
~~~
[3/10]
AVERAGE CALL LENGTH (Registered version only)
This will tell you the average call length to the BBS. It takes
a little time to calculate because it reads in each call and
computes total length in hours, minutes, and seconds.
~~~
[4/1]
DOORS ACTIVATED
This will search for doors activated by keywords.
~~~
[4/2]
DOWNLOADS ACTIVATED
This will search for downloads completed by keywords, it allows you
see who has downloaded a specific file.
~~~
[4/3]
MESSAGES POSTED
This will search for messages posted by area.
~~~
[4/4]
QUESTIONNAIRES ACTIVATED
This will search for questionnaires completed by keywords.
~~~
[4/5]
UPLOADS COMPLETED
This will search for uploads completed by keyword.
~~~
[4/6]
USER'S ACTIVITY
This will search for a user's activity in the categories available.
It is probably one of the most popular used commands.
~~~
[99/1]
BATS has encountered an error while attempting to locate
USERBATS.DAT or another system file. This could be caused by the
following problems:
1) You are not in the correct directory, BATS need to be executed
from the directory you have placed all of its files in and it
is highly recommended that you place it in its own directory.
2) You have not created USERBATS.DAT with BATSCFG.EXE. This is
required and needs to be done before you can scan any log files
or run BATS in interactive mode.
3) ALASDOOR.LST, IGNRDOOR.LST, BATS.CFG or BATSLOGS.CFG are not in
this directory or are missing.
4) The directorys /ARCHIVE /ARCHIVE/TEMP and /LOGS are not created
under the directory BATS is in, RUN BATS.EXE to fix.
~~~
[99/2]
There is an error with the database, either you have not scanned
any logs yet, or you need to run ??TOOLS /SORT to remove any
entries that may be bad. If you are still encountering this error
...Please contact the author for assistance.
~~~
[99/3]
The printer is not responding and BATS cannot print to it. Please
check your connection, paper and power and try it again.
~~~
[99/4]
BATS has encountered a fatal error and cannot continue. Please
consider that you have something configured incorrectly and that
you are in fact in the proper directory. Please take down the
error number shown on the next page and send it to the author with
any information you can provide if you cannot resolve this problem.
~~~
[99/5]
PKZIP(tm) has not created the archive file. Please make sure that
you do in fact have the path pointing to where PKZIP is located
and that you have a sufficient amount of memory available. A full
memory size window is required if you are using a multi-tasker.
~~~
[99/6]
The log scanner has indicated that your database has reached
theoretical limits in size and has automatically archived the
information in the database to a dated archive located in the
ARCHIVE directory. The user file information HAS been preserved
for totals and if you are a REGISTERED user, you will be able to
view this database from the BATS menu VIA Files>View Archived.
~~~
[99/7]
Your database is empty, we cannot archive the database when it
contains no entries. If you have recently received a message that
told you your database was archived automatically, and you are a
registered user, you can use the VIEW function to examine it.
~~~
[99/8]
Now that BATS has purged out user information from the DATABASE,
we need to remove it so that proper user identification can result.
THIS MUST BE DONE AND BATS WILL NOW EXIT! I would like to take this
moment to explain that large databases require extra memory that
BATS could be occupying and the exit will de-allocate the RAM so
sort can do its job.
Activate your ??TOOLS.EXE with the following command
??TOOLS.EXE /SORT
After this is done, you may access BATS again.
This is mandatory!!!!
~~~
[99/10]
USERBATS.DAT is missing or has not been created with BATSCFG.EXE
upon its original installation. BATS.CFG, BATSLOGS.CFG,
ALASDOOR.LST and IGNRDOOR.LST must also be in this directory for
BATS to operate correctly.
~~~
[99/11]
COMMAND LINE ERROR
You must specify an option on the command line.
??TOOLS /SCANLOG <n> where <n> is the node number in BATSLOGS.CFG.
You use this option to scan after each BBS call. You should
make sure that BATSLOGS.CFG line entries are the same order
as your node numbers. If you have a two line BBS then line
one should be entry one in BATSLOGS.CFG and so on. With
this option you can maintain an up to the minute database.
??TOOLS /SCAN
You use this option at midnight. It is required you scan
scan after each call or not. This will clean up the
temporary log that BATS stores in the LOGS directory and
either delete or archive it for later reference.
??TOOLS /SORT
This sorts the database files. You must run this seperate
from /SCAN or /SCANLOG <n>
You use this to sort the database, highly recommended if
you are a multinode system.
~~~
[99/12]
You have not registered BATS as of this time. BATS is Shareware
and as such you are required to register it after three weeks of
use. Registration will disable this message, activate the
unavailable options in BATS, provide you with a toll-free access
number to the author and allows the author to develop more
products in the future. Registering BATS now will ensure that
any future features will work as soon as they become available,
all future versions will work with the same key as listed in the
license agreement in BATS.DOC. For more information please read
BATS.DOC.
~~~
[99/20]
Registration Key Validation Failure
Your registration key does not match the name entered in BATS.CFG.
If the information SEEMS to be correct but you are still having
problems, verify info in BATS.CFG and use all uppercase characters
for your name and BBS name. If you are still having problems with
this, please contact me via the toll-free technical support number
you received with your key. (US and Canada only)
~~~
[99/22]
There is an isufficent amount of string space available to this
program to
continue. This is the result of insufficent memory available for
the job that the program needs to do. It is a serious condition
and if you are running in a multitasker try and increase the
amount of available conventional RAM to the maximum. If you
already have the maximum and you are still encountering this
problem, please contact the author with as much detail about
your system and what you were doing when this error occoured.
