  4. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
  5.  
  6. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  7. buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are
  8. expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
  9. request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
  10. trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
  11. to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
  12. manual.

  14. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
  15. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
  16. stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
  17. commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both
  18. cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in
  19. the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
  20. copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  21. specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
  22. before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  24. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
  25. find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
  26. commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
  27. easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
  28. low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
  29. guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

  33. Users of RT-Expert must accept this disclaimer of warranty:

  35. "RT-Expert is supplied as is.  The Real-Time Intelligent Systems
  36. Corporation disclaims all other warranties either expressed or implied,
  37. including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of
  38. fitness for any purpose.  The Real-Time Intelligent Systems Corporation
  39. assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may
  40. result from the use of RT-Expert."

  42. RT-Expert is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
  43. user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your friends, but you
  44. must share all the files you received, including this one.  The essence
  45. of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
  46. quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
  47. programmers to continue to develop new products.  If you find this
  48. program useful and find that you are using RT-Expert and continue to use
  49. RT-Expert after a 30-day trial period, you must make a registration
  50. payment of $49 to The Real-Time Intelligent Systems Corporation.  The
  51. $49 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer
  52. at any one time.  You must treat this software just like a book.  An
  53. example is that this software may be used by any number of people and
  54. may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as
  55. there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's
  56. being used at another.  Just as a book cannot be read by two different
  57. persons at the same time.

  62. Commercial users of RT-Expert must register and pay for their copies of
  63. RT-Expert within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
  64. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting The Real-Time
  65. Intelligent Systems Corporation.

  67. Anyone distributing RT-Expert for any kind of remuneration must first
  68. contact The Real-Time Intelligent Systems Corporation at the address
  69. below for authorization.  This authorization will be automatically
  70. granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
  71. guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin
  72. offering RT-Expert immediately (However The Real-Time Intelligent
  73. Systems Corporation must still be advised so that the distributor can be
  74. kept up-to-date with the latest version of RT-Expert.).

  76. You also agree to not distribute any software you create using RT-Expert
  77. for a profit.  You are allowed to distribute a program made using
  78. RT-Expert for free, as long as it was made with a registered version of
  79. RT-Expert, and you state somewhere in the opening or main help screen
  80. for the program that it was made using RT-Expert.  Any source code you
  81. create is your own, and you can distribute it, sell it, or keep it to
  82. yourself.  If you do wish to distribute a program made using RT-Expert
  83. for profit, please contact The Real-Time Intelligent Systems Corporation
  84. for information.

  86. You are encouraged to pass a copy of RT-Expert along to your friends for
  87. evaluation.  Please be sure to give them all the files that you
  88. received, and also please encourage them to register their copy if they
  89. find that they can use it.  All registered users will receive a copy of
  90. the latest version of the RT-Expert system and a printed and bound copy
  91. of the Tutorial Manual and the Programmer's Manual.
