INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the TURF.v93 Thoroughbred Handicapping System!
This is the TURF.v93 operations manual on file TURF.DOC. It
contains all the information you will need to install and run
your TURF.v93 system.
If you would like to print this file, type:
COPY TURF.DOC PRN:
at the DOS prompt.
ABOUT THE TURF.v93 PROGRAM
The TURF.v93 Thoroughbred Handicapping System is a powerful
and highly advanced, highly sophisticated, yet easy-to-use,
thoroughbred race handicapping system. It combines sound,
well-established race handicapping principles with scientific
statistical analysis methodology, applied to years' worth of
actual race data, to create a handicapping tool which can
be used at race tracks, from Belmont Park to the county
fair, at OTB or anywhere thoroughbreds are racing and a
Daily Racing Form or similar publication is available.
It includes a full-screen data entry system, with on-line,
context-sensitive help, and a rating capability which will
help even the novice race-goer predict the outcome of
thoroughbred races.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The author is a professional Software Engineer (a fancy name
for Computer Programmer) who has been programming computers
since before PCs even existed. His first handicapping program
was written on punch cards in a batch job entry mainframe
environment. He has worked for years as a defense contractor,
writing programs for highly sophisticated, high-tech defense
and intelligence projects. His experience in handicapping
horse and dog races dates back even further than that, having
patronized and collected race data for many years from a
variety of tracks as diverse as Garden State and Atlantic
City to Churchill Downs and Keeneland to Turf Paradise and
the county fairs of Arizona, as well as Greyhound tracks in
both Florida and Arizona and Jai-Alai frontons in Florida.
He has combined his many years of experience in high-tech
computer programming and scientific statistical analysis
methodology with sound, well-established handicapping
principles to create this powerful, yet easy-to-use,
automated handicapping system.
ABOUT VERSION 1.00
Don't be misled by the version number; this is not a new
program. This is the same program the author has been
using as his personal handicapping system for years. It
has been debugged, tested and put to use in the real world,
i.e. at the race track. Real money has been wagered based
on the predictions from this program. You too can be
confident that with the TURF.v93 system as your handicapping
tool, your hard-earned money is not being thrown away. You
will have a definite edge over all the other bettors who are
still wagering "by the seat of their pants" or using old-
fashioned handicapping methods to support their selections.
And just in case you're one of those people who might wonder
why, if this system is so good, would the author decide to
sell it to others and not keep all the valuable information
provided by it to himself? A good question! It just so
happens that, at the time of this writing, the author lives
in a small town in Arizona which doesn't have a race track.
The nearest racing is a long drive away and the author can't
get there as often as he might like. His misfortune; your
gain.
ABOUT RACE HANDICAPPING
Having said all that about the power of the TURF.v93 system
to predict races, a reality check is in order. No handi-
capping system, including TURF.v93, is magic. This is not
a crystal ball which can peer into the future and guarantee
its user great wealth from race wagers. What the TURF.v93
system is, in fact, is a powerful predictor of the PROBABLE
outcome of races. It examines multiple factors regarding
the race being run, the entries in the race and the recent
past performance history of those entries, and weighs those
factors to compute the PROBABILITY of each entry winning
the race. Remember that some races cannot be handicapped.
Some races are won by animals that seem to have no business
running, let alone winning. Some runners that seem to be
head and shoulders above the rest of the field - a "lock" -
don't come in. Some wagers that actually do win don't pay
enough even to cover the amount of the wager. There is no
substitute for sound human judgement. Don't throw money
around like you expect to win every race you handicap or
profit on a wager which is a bad investment. Pick and
choose your wagers wisely. Remember, the ultimate goal of
race handicapping is not to be able to brag about how many
winners you can predict, but to profit on the wisdom of
your selections over the selections of the other bettors.
The TURF.v93 system is a powerful tool which can provide
the confidence for its users to do that, but the sound
human judgement part is left to each user to exercise.
WARRANTY
This program is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind,
expressed or implied. The author cannot be responsible for
any damage or loss, indirect or consequential, resulting from
the use of this program.
BACKING UP THE TURF.v93 MASTER DISK
Please be sure to make a backup copy of the master disk before
proceeding with installation. This is your safety net in case
anything should ever happen to your original disk. In case of
an accident, you'll be glad you have it.
To make a backup copy:
>Type:
DISKCOPY A: A:
and press ENTER. Follow the prompts, inserting the TURF.v93
master disk when the SOURCE disk is requested and your backup
disk when the TARGET disk is requested. When the copy is
completed, press "N" for "No More Copies". (If you have two
floppy disk drives you may be able to substitute the command:
DISKCOPY A: B:
for the above.) See your DOS manual for more details on the
DISKCOPY command.
INSTALLING THE TURF.v93 PROGRAM
The TURF.v93 master disk contains the following files:
TURFV93.EXE - the automated installation program,
READ.ME - a quick-start, informative introduction to
the TURF.v93 system, and
README.BAT - a simple listing utility to assist in the
reading of the READ.ME file.
If you have the ShareWare distribution disk for the TURF.v93
system, your master disk should also contain the files:
REGISTER.DOC - the program registration form,
UPGRADE.DOC - the version upgrade registration form, and
VENDOR.DOC - the program distribution information file.
The following is the recommended procedure for installing
your TURF.v93 system on a hard drive; you may need to taylor
it somewhat to your particular needs:
>At the DOS prompt, create a subdirectory called TURF.
To do this, type:
MD \TURF
and press ENTER.
>Go to the subdirectory you just created by typing:
CD \TURF
and pressing ENTER.
>Insert the TURF.v93 master disk in drive A and type:
A:TURFV93
and press ENTER.
(If you use drive B for your installation disk,
substitute "B:" for "A:")
>When the installation is complete, your TURF directory
will contain at least the following files:
TURF.EXE - the TURF.v93 program executable file,
TURF.HLP - an on-line help file,
TURF.TRK - a directory of American thoroughbred
race tracks,
READ.ME - a quick-start, informative introduction to
the TURF.v93 system,
README.BAT - a simple listing utility to assist in the
reading of the READ.ME file, and
TURF.DOC - the TURF.v93 operations manual (this file).
If you have the ShareWare version of the TURF.v93 system,
your TURF directory will also contain the files:
REGISTER.DOC - the program registration form,
UPGRADE.DOC - the version upgrade registration form, and
VENDOR.DOC - the program distribution information file.
If you have the enhanced TURF(Plus).v93 system version,
your TURF directory will also contain the files:
TURFREVU.EXE - the TURF_REVIEW program executable file,
TURFREVU.DOC - the TURF_REVIEW operations manual,
HOL34160.08 - a sample Race Data File,
SAMPLE.DIR - a sample Race Data Directory File,
SHOWDATE.EXE - the SHOW_DATE utility for translating
encoded dates, and
SHOWDATE.DOC - the SHOW_DATE utility operations manual.
Your TURF.v93 system is now ready for use. Store your
original disk in a safe, clean place.
CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM
Depending on how your system is configured for video display,
you may need to install the video driver ANSI.SYS. You will
know if your system requires ANSI.SYS if, when you start the
program, you get "garbage" (actually "Escape sequences") all
over your screen instead of neat, organized display. The
basic procedure for installing ANSI.SYS is to include the
following command in your CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=ANSI.SYS
You may need to include a "path" to ANSI.SYS if your system
can't otherwise find it. See your DOS manual for more details
on the installation of ANSI.SYS.
OPTIMIZING PROGRAM PERFORMANCE
If your computer system uses a RAMDrive, you will want to
configure your TURF.v93 system to optimize performance.
Assuming your RAMDrive is logical drive D (if it is any
other letter than "D", just substitute that letter for the
letter "D" in the following command), do the following:
>At the DOS prompt (or in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file), type:
SET TEMP=D:\
Note that there are no spaces in this command except
between "SET" and "TEMP".
If you would like to create a RAMDrive for optimization,
refer to your DOS manual on the use of the "RAMDRIVE" command
and the "CONFIG.SYS" file. This is entirely optional, however.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
Start the program from the TURF subdirectory. If you are
not certain which directory you are in currently, type:
CD \TURF
and press ENTER. Now simply type:
TURF
and press ENTER.
(The program assumes, by default, it is talking to a color
monitor. If you have a monochrome monitor, or you expe-
rience display problems, replace the "TURF" command with:
TURF /NC
and the program will proceed on the assumption it is now
talking to a monochrome monitor.)
RUNNING THE PROGRAM WITH PRELOADED DATA
If you wish to review or revise data which has been previously
stored in a Race Data File, you may preload the data from the
file when you start the program. This is particularly useful
if you choose to store race results on your Race Data File.
You normally don't know the outcome of a race when you're
handicapping it, of course, and you don't want to retype all
that data just to store results with it. Instead, you would
reload the file, add the results and then store the updated
version. You also may want to update certain values which
you learned at post time, such as "added weight", to rerun
predictions and monitor the effect.
To preload a Race Data File, simply add the file name to the
command line when you start the program. If your race data
is in a file named HOL34160.08, simply type:
TURF HOL34160.08
or
TURF HOL34160.08 /NC (for monochrome display)
to start the program.
(Refer to the section on "THE RACE DATA FILE" for an expla-
nation of standard Race Data File naming conventions.)
** This feature is not available in ShareWare versions **
RUNNING THE PROGRAM WITH RESTORED DATA
If you were handicapping a race with TURF.v93 and, before you
finished and got your predictions, there were a power failure,
or your kids pushed your computer's "RESET" button, wondering
what would happen, all would not be lost. You may start the
TURF.v93 program using the "RESTORE" function and recapture all
the data you had entered before the near disaster. TURF.v93
maintains a temporary file called TURF$DAT.TMP which will reside
on disk after your power is restored and until TURF.v93 is run
the next time. This file becomes your Race Data File for pre-
loading. Simply type:
TURF /RESTORE
or
TURF /RESTORE /NC (for monochrome display)
to start the program.
** This feature is not available in ShareWare versions **
NAVIGATING THE DATA ENTRY SCREENS
TURF.v93 is a full-screen data entry system. It functions in
many ways like a standard text editor. The cursor is moved by
the UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys, as well as the TAB,
Shift-TAB, HOME and END keys. Deletions are made with the
DELETE and BACKSPACE keys and OVERSTRIKE/INSERT mode toggling
is available with the INSERT key. Entire fields and/or screens
may be cleared using the Alt-C key (hold the "Alt" key while
simultaneously pressing the letter "C").
Numerical data entry may be accomplished most conveniently at
the numeric keypad where you may utilize the "+" and "-" keys
in conjunction with the numeric keys. Many default values are
available by pressing the "+" and "-" keys as well as easy
access to predefined lists of values. (This is true as well
for many non-numeric values.)
The following is a complete list of special key functions:
1. Insert : toggles between INSERT and OVERSTRIKE modes.
2. Delete : removes the character under the cursor.
3. BackSpace : removes the character to the left of the
cursor.
4. LeftArrow : moves cursor one character to the left.
5. RightArrow : moves cursor one character to the right.
6. Home : moves cursor to the extreme left of the
current field.
7. End : moves cursor to the extreme right of the
current field.
8. "+" : sets current field to the next value in an
ascending list of presets.
9. "-" : sets current field to the next value in a
descending list of presets.
8. Enter : accepts current field value as is and jumps
to the next field.
9. Alt-C : clears current field or, if field is already
clear, initializes entire data entry screen.
10. Tab : jumps to the next data entry field.
11. Shift-Tab : jumps to the previous data entry field.
12. UpArrow : jumps to the data entry field above.
13. DownArrow : jumps to the data entry field below or to
verification box.
14. Escape : returns to the previous data entry screen.
15. "?" : invokes context-sensitive help screen.
16. "??" : invokes general program operation help.
(this list)
GETTING ON-LINE HELP
Typing "?" at any time during the running of the program
accesses the context-sensitive on-line help utility. The
current data entry field is explained in full at the touch
of a keystroke. Press the ENTER key to page through the
help screens for the current topic and then to return to
the current data entry screen. (The help function may be
aborted by pressing the ESCAPE key.)
Typing "?" a second time accesses the general program
operation help screen. This screen summarizes the special
key functions available for data entry and editting.
DATA VERIFICATION
Each data entry screen includes a verification box. This
will enables you to verify your entries before moving on
to the next screen. By default, the cursor moves first to
the box marked "OK". Pressing ENTER here will accept the
entries as you entered them and move on. If you made an
error in some entry, or for some reason wish to make a
change, press the UP arrow to return to the data entry
field which you wish to edit. If you must redo the entire
screen, press Alt-C. Press ESCAPE or move to the box marked
"CANCEL" and press ENTER to abandon the screen and return to
the previous screen.
ENTERING DATA
The following pages detail the data entry screens provided by
the TURF.v93 system. A sample screen is included for each
level of data entry with detailed instructions for each field
on that screen. The screens are presented in the order they
will be seen.

The first data entry screen you will see is the "Track Screen".
It will provide general information about the track for which
today's races are to be analyzed. Enter data as follows:
TRACK TODAY
Enter the track abbreviation for the site of today's race.
The TURF.v93 program recognizes mostly all of the standard
2-3 letter track abbreviations used by the Daily Racing
Form and other publications, such as:
"Hol" for Hollywood Park, or
"CD" for Churchill Downs
On entry, the full name of the track site will be displayed
at the top of the data entry dialog box. (If the display
shows "<Unknown Track>", the code you entered is simply
not listed on the track reference file, TURF.TRK. Check
that you have entered the proper abbreviation for this
track before proceeding. If the code is in fact unlisted,
this will in no way affect the proper operation of the
TURF.v93 program.)
Upper/Lower case is not significant in track code entries.
DATE TODAY
Enter the date of today's race.
All dates are entered in "mm/dd/yy" format where:
"mm" represents the month,
"dd" represents the day of the month, and
"yy" represents the year.
Digits may be entered directly from the keyboard or the
"+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease a
current value.
The year defaults to the current calender year.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
OK [ ] Cancel [ ]
Past performance data is provided by the "Paceline Selection
Screen". Use this screen to select any and all past performance
pacelines deemed significant indications of today's possible
performance. Pay particular attention to the paceline selection
recommendation listed below under the DATE entry. Enter data as
follows:
DATE
Enter dates of past performances, beginning with the most
recent race and proceeding backwards chronologically.
All dates are entered in "mm/dd/yy" format where:
"mm" represents the month,
"dd" represents the day of the month, and
"yy" represents the year.
Digits may be entered directly from the keyboard or the
"+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease a
current value.
The year defaults to the value which is within a calender
year of today's race date.
Press ENTER after all race dates have been entered.
Recommendation: Enter at least the 3 most recent past
performances, regardless of class, distance or quality of
performance. Then, optionally, add any relatively recent
older races which may be deemed significant indications of
today's possible performance.
TRACK
Enter track abbreviations for the sites of past
performances.
The TURF.v93 program recognizes mostly all of the standard
2-3 letter track abbreviations used by the Daily Racing
Form and other publications, such as:
"Hol" for Hollywood Park, or
"CD" for Churchill Downs
By default, pressing the "+" key will automatically enter
the code for today's track site.
Upper/Lower case is not significant in track code entries.
DISTANCE
Enter the distance of past performances.
Certain distances may be entered directly from the
keyboard; all others must be entered by using the "+" and
"-" keys to step through a list of predefined race distance
labels, starting with the distance of today's race.
Distance values entered directly from the keyboard are
limited to numbers from "3" to "7" (assumed to be furlongs)
and the number "1" (assumed to be 1 mile).
The complete list of predefined distance labels accessed by
the "+" and "-" keys is as follows:
3 f. : 3 furlongs 1 mile : 1 mile
3½ f. : 3½ furlongs 1&40yd : 1 mile + 40 yards
4 f. : 4 furlongs 1&70yd : 1 mile + 70 yards
4½ f. : 4½ furlongs 1 1/16 : 1 1/16 miles
5 f. : 5 furlongs 1 1/8 : 1 1/8 miles
5½ f. : 5½ furlongs 1 3/16 : 1 3/16 miles
6 f. : 6 furlongs 1 1/4 : 1 1/4 miles
6½ f. : 6½ furlongs 1 5/16 : 1 5/16 miles
7 f. : 7 furlongs 1 3/8 : 1 3/8 miles
7½ f. : 7½ furlongs 1 7/16 : 1 7/16 miles
1 1/2 : 1 1/2 miles
Occasionally, races are listed at some distance other than
those listed above. Do not try to approximate distances.
If a race distance is unlisted, leave the field blank.
TRACK CONDITION
Enter the track condition for past performances.
Track condition codes may be entered directly from the
keyboard or by using the "+" and "-" keys to toggle the
set of predefined track condition code labels.
The set of track condition code labels consists of:
Fst : fast track
Off : off track, any condition other than fast
To enter track condition codes directly from the keyboard,
enter the first letter of the code.
For: Fast track Enter: "F"
Off track "O"
Upper/Lower case is not significant in track condition code
entries.
CLASS
Enter the class of past performances.
Class levels may be entered directly from the keyboard or
by using the "+" and "-" keys to step through a list of
predefined class labels, starting with today's class.
The complete list of class labels is as follows:
Mdn : Maiden DbyT : Derby Trial
Clm : Claiming StkT : Stakes Trial
Alw : Allowance Fut : Futurity
Hcp : Handicap Dby : Derby
FutT : Futurity Trial Stk : Stakes
To enter class directly from the keyboard, enter the first
letter of the class, if the race is not a trial, or enter
"T" followed by "F", "D" or "S" if the race is a trial.
For example:
For: Maiden class Enter: "M"
Futurity class "F"
Futurity trial "TF"
Upper/Lower case is not significant in class code entries.
By default, leaving the class field blank, but then
entering a value in the price field, will be assumed to be
Claiming class.
Occasionally, races are listed at some other class level
than those listed above. The following substitutions are
recommended:
For: Stakes Consolation race Use: Allowance class
Starter Allowance race Claiming class
If any other class is unlisted, leave the field blank.
PRICE
Enter the claim price of past performances, if the race is
a claiming race, or the purse, if listed.
Price values may be entered directly from the keyboard or
the "+" and "-" keys may be used to increase or decrease
a current value in increments of $500.
By default, if the class field is blank and a value is
entered in the price field, it will be assumed to be a
claiming price.
When all data required by the "Paceline Selection Screen" has
been entered, verify entries as "OK" to move to the next screen.

Additional past performance data is provided by the "Calls
Screen". Enter data as follows:
WEIGHT
Enter the weight this horse carried for past performances.
Weight values may be entered directly from the keyboard or
the "+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease a
current value, starting with today's carrying weight.
CALL
Enter this horse's position at each call in past
performances. The call positions required are:
Break : first call after the start
Stretch : last call before the finish
Finish : finish position
Call positions may be entered directly from the keyboard or
the "+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease a
current value.
If a horse did not finish ("DNF") or for some other reason
has no position listed for a particular call, leave that
field blank.
LENGTHS
Enter the number of lengths behind the winner, or lengths
ahead if this horse was the winner, in past performances.
Lengths values may be entered directly from the keyboard or
by using the "+" and "-" keys either to advance or decrease
a current value, or to step through a list of predefined
partial length codes, if the value is less than 1/4 length.
If the lengths value is less than 1/4 length:
Partial length values may be entered directly from the
keyboard or by using the "+" and "-" keys to step through
a list of predefined partial length codes.
The compete list of partial length codes is as follows:
No : nose
Hd : head
Nk : neck
To enter partial length values directly from the
keyboard, simply enter the 2-letter partial length code.
Upper/Lower case is not significant in partial length
code entries.
If the lengths value is 1/4 length or more:
Lengths values may be entered directly from the keyboard
or the "+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or
decrease a current value.
To enter lengths values directly from the keyboard, enter
the whole number value, NOT rounded to the nearest
length. If the value is less than 1 length, the field
may be left blank.
A second field is provided for fractions of a length,
measured in quarters. This fraction also may be entered
directly from the keyboard or by using the "+" and "-"
keys to increase or decrease the value in increments of
one quarter.
To enter fractions directly from the keyboard, enter the
number of quarters, "1" for 1/4 length, "2" for 1/2
length and "3" for 3/4 length.
If a horse did not finish ("DNF"), was out of the finish
picture ("OOP") or for some other reason has no listed
lengths behind value, leave the entire lengths field
blank.
When all data required by the "Calls Screen" has been entered,
verify entries as "OK" to move to the next screen.

speed in today's race. Enter data as follows:
TIME
Enter the winner's time for past performances.
All times are entered in "m:ss.f" format where:
"m" represents minutes,
"ss" represents seconds, and
"f" represents fifths of a second.
Digits may be entered directly from the keyboard or the
"+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease a
current value.
Note: Some race programs will list both the winner's
time and a computed time which is an estimate of a
horse's actual running time in a race. Do not use
this estimate. Use the official winner's time only.
SPEED INDEX
Enter this horse'e computed speed index for past
performances.
Note: A speed index is that number, typically in the
range of 1 to 100, which indicates a horse's
speed relative to the quality of horses which have
previously run at a particular track. The speed
index is often listed with a second value, as in
"89-17". The number after the hyphen is a track
variant and is to be ignored.
Speed index values may be entered directly from the
keyboard or the "+" and "-" keys may be used to advance
or decrease a current value.

backwards from the most recent race, in which this horse
was the listed favorite, whether the horse won or lost
those races.
Note: A listed favorite is typically indicated in the race
program or Racing Form by an asterisk next to the
horse's listed odds for each race.
Values may be entered directly from the keyboard or the
"+" and "-" keys may be used to advance or decrease the
current value.
If the horse was not the favorite in its last race, leave
the field blank.

Upon completion of data entry for each post position in the race,
the "Prediction Screen" appears. Here each entry in the race
is listed in the order the TURF.v93 rating system predicts it
will finish. Note the "Score" column to the extreme right of
the screen. This number measures the relative probability of
each animal winning the race. Here are some general guidelines
to help you in making your wagering selections:
1. If the top score far exceeds the second-to-the-top score,
you have a strong selection.
2. If the top scores are relatively close, then the race is
probably wide open.
3. Any score over 400 usually indicates a strong contender.
4. Conversely, any score under 300 usually indicates a non-
contender which can be ignored.
(This is a "rule of thumb" only, you must be the ultimate judge.)
The other values on the screen are for informative purposes only;
they have already been factored into the scoring. They are:
Class - a numerical value indicating the relative class level
at which this entry has been competing with some
measure of success. An exclamation mark indicates
a particularly high rating for this field.
PCR - Proven Class Rating, an indication of recent success
at today's (or comparable) class level.
OBR - On-Board Rating, a numerical value indicating the
relative consistency of this entry finishing "On-Board"
or "In-the-Money". An exclamation mark indicates a
particularly high rating for this field.
Speed - a numerical value indicating the relative speed
capability of this entry, running at today's (or
comparable) distance. An exclamation mark indicates
a particularly high rating for this field. If only
asterisks ("****") are present, there are no
significant races to rate.

PROGRAM OUTPUT - THE LOG DATA FILE
The TURF.v93 program produces a log file called TURF.LOG.
This file summarizes the predictions for all the races you have
entered since loading the program. It may be printed to hard
copy, thus providing an invaluable reference tool which may be
carried to the race track and reexamined as wagering decisions
are being made. An example file is included on the next page.

The "Log Data Output File", TURF.LOG, is an enhanced version of
the data displayed by the "Prediction Screen". The top portion
of the file for each race is, in fact, an exact duplication of
that screen. Refer to the previous section devoted to the
"Prediction Screen" for explanations of the "Score", "Class",
"PCR", "OBR" and "Speed" values.
The "Log Data Output File" continues, however, with a Speed
Rating summary for each entry. Each of the past performance
pacelines is listed with the following summary information:
Date - the date of the past performance.
Days - the number of days since that race was run.
Dst - the change in distance (in yards) from that race to
today's distance. Numbers greater than zero indicate
"going longer today" or an increase in distance.
Similarly, negative numbers indicate "dropping back"
or a decrease in distance. A zero indicates the race
was at today's distance.
SR - a "raw" Speed Rating for that performance, adjusted for
track surface condition and change in distance.
Wgt - the change in weight (in pounds) from that race to the
weight being carried in today's race. Numbers greater
than zero indicate an increase in weight while negative
numbers indicate a decrease. A zero indicates the same
weight was carried as will be in today's race.
SR+ - the "adjusted" Speed Rating for that performance, based
on "SR" above, but further adjusted for change in weight.
Again, as with many of the values on the "Prediction Screen",
these summaries are provided for informative purposes only; they
have already been factored into the scoring.
THE RACE DATA FILE
If you opted to save race data at the "File Output Confirmation
Screen", all data entries for the current race will be written
to a Race Data File. This Race Data File may be reviewed and/or
revised as preloaded data on subsequent runs of the TURF.v93
program. (Refer to the section on "RUNNING THE PROGRAM WITH
PRELOADED DATA" for details.) It also may be analyzed by a
utility program called TURF_REVIEW, described below under
"REGISTRATION".
Race Data Files are named according to the track where a race
is run, the date of the race and the race number. The naming
standard used is:
tttddddd.rr
where:
ttt represents the track in its standard Racing Form
abbreviation, such as "Hol" for Hollywood Park;
ddddd represents the date of the race as converted to
a 5-digit code which is unique for each day in
the current century; and
rr represents the race number, with leading zero as
needed.
The file name "HOL34160.08", for example, represents the 8th
race at Hollywood Park on July 11, 1993.

SHAREWARE
If you have a registered version of TURF.v93, you may skip
these sections of the documentation. This information is
directed at those users who are using the limited-use, trial
version of the system.
Your version of the TURF.v93 Thoroughbred Handicapping System
is user-supported software, or ShareWare. That is, it is not
free software. It is copyright (c) 1994 and the intellectual
property of its author. Non-registered users are granted a
limited license to use the TURF.v93 system on a trial basis
for the purpose of determining whether it is a suitable product
for their needs. Use of the TURF.v93 system, except for this
limited purpose, requires registration. Use of non-registered
copies of TURF.v93 by anyone is strictly forbidden.
All users are free to copy and distribute the trial version of
the TURF.v93 system for the trial use of others subject to a
few restrictions:
>TURF.v93 must be copied in unmodified form, complete with
all licensing and registration information.
>No fee, beyond a nominal handling charge, is charged for its
use, copying or distribution.
Distributors should read the file VENDOR.DOC for more details.
REGISTRATION
A TURF.v93 registration provides the user license to use the
system on a regular basis. Not only does this registration
fulfill a legal obligation for users who wish continued use
of the product, but it supports the ShareWare system of user-
supported software. Without user support for products, the
authors of this and other programs cannot afford to upgrade
and enhance their programs, not to mention create new programs
for public use.
Beyond issues of legality and clear conscience, however, there
are further benefits to registering the TURF.v93 program.
>You will be eligible for technical support. If you have any
questions regarding the operation of the TURF.v93 system,
feel free to write. (Sorry, mail support only. This staff
of one couldn't possibly afford the time to provide phone
support and still program the computer, not to mention go
to work and occasionaly spend time with the kids.) Comments
and suggestions are always welcomed.
>You will be able to upgrade to an enhanced version of the
TURF.v93 system - TURF(Plus).v93. For just a few extra
dollars, you will be sent this enhanced version which con-
tains increased capability over the trial version. (Rest
assured the trial version is in no way a "crippled" version
of TURF.v93; the identical full-screen data entry system,
on-line help facility and scientific race prediction formulas
are available in each. TURF(Plus).v93 is simply a superset of
the trial version.)
TURF(Plus).v93 will, first of all, bypass those introductory
and sign-off screens which, after you've read them once or
twice, you really don't need to see again. More importantly
though, the enhanced version contains a data save/restore
function which will permit you to save all the race data
you've entered into the system. The trial version does not
save your data. With the TURF(Plus).v93 enhanced system:
>>You can store files containing all the races you'll ever
handicap. With these files, you can review race predic-
tions after the race has been run. You can update your
original data entries (for instance, to revise "added
weight", a value not available until post time) and rerun
your predictions to monitor the effect. You can store with
your race data, the results of the races you've handicapped,
including pari-mutual prices. And you won't have to retype
the entire race data to do all this because the data restore
function will reload the race for you. With the addition of
the TURF_REVIEW program, described below, you can even keep
a running accounting of how your program is doing, race
after race, day after day, year after year.
>>You will be sent an additional program called TURF_REVIEW.
TURF_REVIEW keeps a running account of how your handicapping
system is doing. You can review 1 race or hundreds of races
just by entering the name of a Race Data File, which has
been saved by your enhanced TURF(Plus).v93 program, or a
directory of Race Data Files. You will then see a composite
tally of how many winners your program has picked, as well
as how many places or shows, how many Quinellas, Exactas or
Trifectas, and even how successful it has been picking by a
variety of boxing and wheeling strategies. This could be a
valuable quide to how you might wish to bet on future races.
>>You will be sent an additional utility program called
SHOWDATE which converts dates to and from the unique,
5-digit date code used in the naming of Race Data Files.
>>You will be sent full, printable documentation on both the
TURF(Plus).v93 and TURF_REVIEW programs.
