HOW TO ACCESS AND USE MENUS AND WHAT KEYS DO WHAT?
$mart Gambler uses a familiar pull-down menu interface with a
minimum of levels. Menu selections may be made by:
(1) Positioning to them with the arrow keys and either
pressing "Pulling-down" or pressing "Enter."
(2) Entering the first character of the choice.
The "Esc" key cancels a selection or displays the last menu
accessed. To access the main menu directly, press the "F10" key.
The "F1" key accesses context sensitive help. The bottom of each
screen shows the available actions and keys. Certain operations
doing file importing, saving or retrieving, require pressing
"Ctrl+Break" to abort if needed. USE OF "SCROLL LOCK" IS NOT
RECOMMENDED AS IT CAUSES PROBLEMS IN SOME FUNCTIONS.
HOW TO INPUT INITIALIZATION AND CODE INFORMATION AND NEW DATA?
When selecting Initialization, Money Management-Edit, Casino
Codes-Edit, Type Codes-Edit, Input or Registration, a range input
mode starts. This mode allows typing in the requested items and
then changing position with the down arrow key. Press "Enter"
after entering all wanted items.
To correct an entry, position on it with the down arrow key and
either over type or press the "F2" key to edit it. When done
correcting, press "Enter."
After completing entry, a "No or Yes information is correct menu"
will be presented. Selecting "No" returns to the range input
mode. Selecting "Yes" goes on to the next step.
HOW TO VIEW, EDIT AND PRINT DATA, THE DATA FORM AND THE REPORT?
When selecting Data Form, Edit or View, a spreadsheet type mode
starts. In this mode, the arrow and page keys may be used to
move around the selected area and view the information.
In the data Edit area, the inputted data may be corrected by over
typing or pressing the "F2" key to edit. In the Data Form and
View report areas, certain unprotected items may be changed. No
items developed by formulas may be changed.
In these areas, spreadsheet type commands may be accessed by
pressing "F8." The available commands are copy, erase, format,
change protection if allowed and print and extract sections to a
spreadsheet program compatible file. Press "Esc" or "F10" to
return to the main menu. DO NOT PRESS "F8" THEN "F10."
HOW TO SELECT AND SET UP DOT MATRIX AND LASER TYPE PRINTERS?
$mart Gambler should not require any special printer setup
strings. All printing uses only ASCII characters and form feeds
and at 10 characters per inch. This is the default on most PC
printers. All printing is on 8.5 by 11.0 inch paper.
Special set up strings may be entered by selecting "Setup."
Consult the printer manual for specific strings wanted. Enter
them in preceded with a back slash character. Example: "\015" is
the set up string for most dot matrix printers to print condensed
print.
The type of printer to be used should be selected, either Dot
Matrix or Laser. The reason for this is to avoid any conflicts
with laser type printers that get a reset command. This is the
\027\069 setup string seen when selecting Laser printers.
The top margin may be changed but is not recommended. The
default value is zero but due to blank lines created, printing
begins one inch below the top of the paper. Select "TopMargin"
to change.
The bottom margin may be changed but is not recommended. The
default value is five but due to blank lines created, printing
ends one inch from the bottom of the paper. Select
"BottomMargin" to change.
HOW TO COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION SELF-MAILING FORM AND SEND?
When selecting "Registration" screens describing the benefits of
registration and how to register display. Keep pressing "Esc"
until a registration form displays for range input.
The screen is a self-mailing registration form to input your
name, address, phone number, diskette size and source of
shareware. Please indicate CompuServe, BBS name, Disk Vendor
name, User Group name or other source. After completing these
items: [a] Print the form [b] Fold as shown [c] Insert your check
taping the sides and bottom [d] Add postage stamp and mail. If
you prefer you may just print the form and clearly write-in the
information. Also you may also insert it into an envelope
addressing it as shown. Your questions, comments and suggestions
are welcome, write them in on the back side.
HOW TO REVIEW AND PRINT THE GAMBLING & CASINO GAMES TUTORIALS?
The $mart Gambler tutorial lessons contain important information
on gambling and casino games. To save memory, each tutorial
lesson remains on the disk until requested.
After selecting a tutorial, use the Page Down, Page Up, Arrow
Down and Arrow Up keys to position the information.
To print the entire tutorial, press the "F7" key. To print a
specific chart or section, position fully on the screen and press
Print Screen. This may be done by pressing the "Shift+Print
Screen" keys.
Press "Esc" when done reviewing the specific tutorial.
HOW TO USE THE PLANNING MENU FEATURES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
The Planning menu helps in planning gambling trips and sets up
the program to collect data by casino and type codes. The five
sub-menu choices in it are:
INITIALIZE: To define the name or title on forms and reports, the
starting and ending periods, the decimal points format and the
data filename. When $mart Gambler loads it looks for a data file
named SGAMB.WKB. The file name (not the extension) may be
changed and either specified as a parameter when loading (SGAMB
filename) or by selecting File-Retrieve after loading. The dates
may be entered as mm/dd/yy, dd/mm/yy or yy/mm/dd. The default
format is 0 decimal places.
MONEY MANAGEMENT: To input and edit the (1) trip bankroll amount
(2) length in hours of total planned play (3) length in hours of
individual session play (4) betting plan (5) quit percentage
point. From this information, $mart Gambler calculates a
recommended bet size, session bankroll amounts and session and
trip quit points. This information may be printed individually
or with the data collection form. See Money Management tutorial
for more explanation on money management techniques.
CASINO CODES: To define a list of up to ten different casino
codes and their names, planned to be tracked. Data then may be
inputted by casino code and the $mart Gambler report and graphs
will show results by casino. Selected samples for different
gambling areas may be imported from the current directory only.
TYPE CODES: To define the games or type of one game, planned to
be tracked. Data then may be inputted by type code and the $mart
Gambler report and graphs will show results by type. Selected
samples for different types may be imported from the current
directory only.
If playing only one type of game, the user may want to track
results by a specific feature of that game. This may be the
number of decks used in blackjack, the maximum odds bet in craps
or another breakdown that can be defined. Import the sample type
codes for the game played and edit as wanted.
If playing a variety of games, the user may want to track results
by game type. Import the Games sample type codes and edit as
wanted. If the user wants to track results by game type and a
specific feature, the best method would be to keep separate data
files for each game played. The reports for each game type then
may be compared.
IMPORTANT: If either Casino or Type codes change after data has
been inputted, recompute. Data for casinos or types deleted will
not be reflected in detail statistics but will be in the summary
statistics.
DATA FORM: To prepare a form to be used to collect gambling
session results while at the casino for later input into the
program. Certain items may be changed by over typing, editing
using "F2" or using the spreadsheet menu. Also displayed are
Money management limits as defined in that feature.
PRINT FORM: To print the data collection form. The form also may
be printed from the Data Form screen.
HOW TO USE THE REPORT MENU FEATURES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
The Report menu allows the $mart Gambler to input and analyze
their gambling results. From the information inputted, a data
base gets created and a statistical report and graphs developed.
The report provides summary statistical results with details by
casino and the type of games played. The report menu's six
sub-menu choices are:
INPUT: To input one gambling session's results from the data
collection form or other record. The date may be entered as
mm/dd/yy, dd/mm/yy or yy/mm/dd. The maximum sessions tracked is
currently set to 250. If preferred, data may be inputted
directly into the data base form by selecting Edit.
EDIT: To review the inputted data and make any corrections or
changes to it if required. The data base also may be printed
from this selection if wanted.
COMPUTE: To process new data and update the report and graphs.
VIEW: To view the $mart Gambler updated report. Certain titles
and other items may be modified using the spreadsheet menu.
PRINT: To print the $mart Gambler updated report.
GRAPH: To view graphs on cumulative results and casino and type
averages. Graphics display adapter required.
HOW TO USE THE FILE MENU FEATURES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
The file menu includes normal file maintenance items plus an
option of retrieving an example $mart Gambler data base and
report for learning the program's features. The seven sub-menu
choices in it are:
SAVE: To save the updated report by the file name provided in
Planning-Initialize. Default filename is SGAMB.WKB. The
filename but not the extension may be changed.
EXAMPLE: To retrieve an example data base and report. Provides
an example of the $mart Gambler program features.
BLANK: To blank out all information in the data base and report
currently in memory. Use this to start a new report under a new
name.
RETRIEVE: To retrieve a different $mart Gambler report. When
loading $mart Gambler this also may be specified on the command
line as a parameter. Enter SGAMB filename.
DIRECTORY: To change the default $mart Gambler DOS directory. It
is best to make it the current directory before loading.
LIST: To list filenames in the current directory. The path also
may be edited to list filenames elsewhere.
GOTODOS: To evoke the DOS command interpreter and do DOS
commands. Memory limitations may restrict the type of DOS
operations performed. To return to $mart Gambler, enter EXIT.
HOW TO SAVE NEW DATA ON RESULTS THAT HAS BEEN INPUTTED?
If new data has been inputted into $mart Gambler or other
maintenance type items done, it is important to save the file
before exiting the program. If it is not done, the new data will
be lost and have to be reentered.
Selecting File-Save prepares to save the file in the current
directory with the file name defined in Initialize. Added
automatically is the file extension "WKB." Press "Enter" to
accept this filename.
IMPORTANT: Data stored on hard disk drives should always be
backed-up to prevent loss in case of failure. Specify extension
"WKB" in any back-up program used and the $mart Gambler data
files will then be protected from loss.
If the file already exists, a "Cancel, Replace or Backup" menu
will be displayed. Selecting Cancel aborts the command.
Selecting Replace, overwrites the file on disk. Selecting Backup
changes the file extension of the current disk file to "BAK" and
saves the updated file as WKB.
To change to a different filename, press any character to modify
it or the directory.
If it is needed to abort the File-Save menu for any reason, press
"Ctrl+Break" keys.
HOW TO RETRIEVE DIFFERENT DATA INPUTTED IN ANOTHER FILE?
When loading $mart Gambler the default data file loaded is
"SGAMB.WKB." This may be changed by specifying a different data
filename in the operating system command line. Do this by
entering:
SGAMB filename
Alternately a different data file may be retrieved by using File-
Retrieve. A list of the extension WKB files in the current
directory gets displayed. Select the wanted one by pointing to
with the arrow keys and pressing "Enter."
Pressing any key will allow the filename or directory to be
modified. DOS wild card characters may be used to limit display
to a group of files.
HOW TO USE THE SPREADSHEET COMMANDS IN EDIT AND VIEW FEATURES?
When selecting Data Form, Edit or View, spreadsheet type commands
may be accessed by pressing the "F8" key. These may be used to
clean up errors or customize the area's features to something
different. The specific Spreadsheet menu choices and
explanations follow.
COPY: Copy a cell or range of cells. First establish the "from"
range. Do this by either using the arrow keys to establish a
range from where the cell pointer is now or press backspace to
reset and the period to anchor. After the "from" range is
established, move the cell pointer to the "to" range.
ERASE: Erase an unprotected cell or range of unprotected cells.
Use the arrow keys to establish a range from where the cell
pointer is now. Alternatively press backspace to reset range and
period to anchor.
FORMAT: Format a cell or range of cells to a fixed decimal place
format. Use arrow keys to establish range or backspace to reset
and period to anchor.
UNPROTECT: Unprotect a cell or range of cells to allow changes.
Use arrow keys to establish range or backspace to reset and
period to anchor.
PROTECT: Protect a cell or range of cells to disallow changes.
Use arrow keys to establish range or backspace to reset and
period to anchor.
PRINT: Print a range by using arrow keys to establish the needed
range or backspace to reset and period to anchor.
XTRACT: File extract a range to a spreadsheet compatible file.
Use arrow keys to establish range or backspace to reset and
period to anchor. A new file name must be defined each time as
an existing file cannot be replaced in Xtract.
HOW TO INTERPRET AND CORRECT POSSIBLE ERROR CONDITIONS?
When $mart Gambler fails normal execution, an error screen will
be displayed. This will show the error message along with
possible causes and corrective action recommendations.
If no possible cause or corrective action is defined it will show
undefined. Later versions of $mart Gambler will have
additional corrective action defined with experience.
Review the information and do any corrective action. When ready
to resume, return to the main menu by pressing "Esc."

Version 1.5 Update September 1993. Color changing, more
graphs and five easy steps to becoming a
$mart Gambler added.
Version 1.6 Repackaged for CD-ROM distribution January 1994.
When preparing to update to a new version, if the default data
file name SGAMB.WKB has active data, save it under a different
filename such as SGAMB1.WKB. Next install the new version and if
wanted retrieve the data file created from the old version.
DISPLAY ADAPTERS:
$mart Gambler should function with all monochrome and color
monitors and all display adapters.
If using a CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) and experiencing snow on
the display, press keys "Ctrl+F10" to clear it.
Hercules displays require an initialization be performed before
displaying graphs. Enter SGAMBH and a batch file provided will
run the MSHERC.COM initializing program and then start
$mart Gambler.
You may change certain screen color and gray scale elements by
selecting COLOR, LCD or MONOCHROME. Select Standard to return to
the default colors.
AUTOMATIC LOADING:
To make loading $mart Gambler easier from the DOS operating
system, a batch file may be created in the DOS root directory. To
create the file, enter the following at the DOS prompt:
COPY CON: SG.BAT
CD\SG
SGAMB (for Hercules display adapters use SGAMBH)
After entering, press the "F6" key and "Enter." Once this batch
file is created, entering a "SG" in the root directory will change
the current directory to SG and load $mart Gambler.
