**** GolfLog *************************************** -Origin- ****
GolfLog was first written in the spring of 1992 as a personal
database to be used to keep track of my Golf scores and to
give some insight on the progress, or lack of same, of my Golf
game. No thoughts of distribution were entertained at that
time. At first it only kept the scores of each individual game
in the database. I soon added the ability for keeping the
hole scores of each individual game. Next came the averages,
then totals for Pars, Birdies, etc. By early summer of the same
year the ability for it to figure a Handicap Index that would
be close to the one provided by the United States Golf Association
was added. After spending quite a bit of effort developing
a formula that would provide reasonably accurate results and
comparing the results that GolfLog provided to the ones that
were obtained from the U.S.G.A. it was then the decision was
made to release GolfLog to the general public. The method
for distribution was through the Shareware Distribution Network
located in Meriden, CT and operated by Ray Kaliss. A copy of
the shareware version was placed on a floppy diskette and mailed
in late summer. Within a few days of the mailing, GolfLog was
being distributed via computer operated electronic bulletin
boards all over the world via the Shareware Distribution Network
with a filename extension of ".SDN"
In mid August, 1992, the first order was received, It came from
of all places, New Zealand. Soon after that first order, came
orders from all over the United States, Germany, Sweden, South
Africa, Australia, New South Wales, Canada, Mexico, England,
France, Spain, and Switzerland. All the while, GolfLog was
being revised, tweaked, updated, added to, etc. and a caller
to RiverBend BBS could download a revised version almost on
a weekly basis.
The revisions and updates to GolfLog have somewhat stabilized
now and revisions are issued only when major changes are made.
Hopefully you will find GolfLog to be of help in providing
up-to-the-minute information about your own Golf game and
will see fit to send in the registration fee and obtain the
full blown registered version.
Many changes and additions have been made to GolfLog since
the beginning, all with the intent of making GolfLog the most
popular database for Golfers available. From looking at the
sales volumn, we like to think that GolfLog has achieved this
goal despite the lack of any advertising other than through
the Shareware Distribution Network.

When extracting the archive GOLFLOG9.ZIP, to be assured you're
getting an authentic copy of GolfLog, you should see "-AV" to
the right of each filename as it's being extracted. After the
extraction process has completed, you should see at the bottom
of the list of extracted files a small rectangular box indicating
that the archive was obtained direct from RiverBend BBS. If you
see this then you will know the archive has not been modified or
tampered with after it left RiverBend BBS. (NOTE: This does not
apply to the archive with the ".SDN" extension.)
If the above information does not appear, it does not necessarily
mean the archive is bad, however it will mean the archive has
been "unzipped" and rearchived since it left RiverBend BBS.
While we prefer that GOLFLOG9.ZIP remain in its original archive
package, we have no control over what happens to the archive
after it leaves RiverBend SoftWare or RiverBend BBS.
If you prefer to have an authentic copy of GOLFLOG9.ZIP that
you know has not been modified or altered in any way, then
you should call RiverBend BBS and download the latest version.
First time callers have limited download privileges and can
always download the latest version of GolfLog.
If you prefer to call RiverBend BBS and get directly into the
system without having to go through the "first call verification"
routine, just call either of the two numbers listed below and
when asked for your FIRST and LAST name, enter "GUEST" and press
your <Enter> Key. You will then be allowed into the system
and will be able to download the latest version of GolfLog.
Here's how to do it...
You will see: "Enter your FIRST and LAST name:"
You then type: "Guest" and press <Enter>
NOTE ** Type "Guest" only 1 time. Do not type "Guest Guest"

rename GOLF_386.COM to GOLFLOG.COM and you'll get a much faster
running version of GolfLog.
**** GolfLog ******************************** -Quick Start- ******
QUICK START
~~~~~~~~~~~
>>>>> N O T E * See the CHANGES.TXT file for additional instructions
and last minute changes regarding this version (v9.0e)
of GolfLog.
1.. If you're running a 386, or 486 computer then use the
file GOLF_386.COM as it's faster than the "XT" version.
If you're running an XT you must use the version of
GOLFLOG.COM that's in the archive.
2.. Copy GOLFLOG.COM to a separate directory on your hard drive.
The directory can be named C:\GOLF as an example.
3.. Change to this directory and type GOLFLOG and press <Enter>
4.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [A] - Add Golfer
4a.... Complete the information at the screen that appears
asking for information (name, sex, age, etc). If all the
information entered is correct, press "Y" for Yes.
5.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [2] Add Course
5a.... Complete the information at this screen. You should
be able to get all the needed information from a scorecard
for the course you're recording. After you enter a Course
Record in the database you will not have to enter it again.
>>>>> The Course Manager/Club Pro should be able to tell
>>>>> you what the USGA Slope and USGA Rating is for the
>>>>> Course (it may also be found on the score card).
6.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [1] Add Game
6a.... Here you will need the scorecard from the game you're
about to record. Complete the questions at this screen, save
the record and a Game Record will be added to the database.
NOTE GolfLog will work best if you run the version compiled for
your machine type. If you have a 386 or 486 machine then run
the 386 version (GOLF_386.COM) and rename it to GOLFLOG.COM for
best results. If you're upgrading from an earlier version, just
rename the appropriate ".COM" file to GOLFLOG.COM and copy it
over the top of the older copy you already have.
**** GolfLog ************************************* Page -1- *****
INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog can be run from a floppy diskette or from a hard disk.
If it is run from a floppy diskette, use a new diskette with
no other files on it except GOLFLOG.COM (GolfLog will run much
faster from a hard disk).
NOTE * Rename the proper executable file (*.COM) to GOLFLOG.COM
using the DOS "Rename" command if you using other than an XT.
Example: RENAME GOLF_386.COM GOLFLOG.COM
To rename the "386/486" version
If you run GolfLog from a hard disk, make a separate directory and
call it something like GOLF or GOLFLOG. Your prompt, when in this
new directory, should look similar to C:\GOLF> (Note that GolfLog
will run much faster on a hard disk than it will when run from a
floppy). Copy GOLFLOG.COM to the new directory. Make sure that
you have at least 250k free space available on your hard drive.
After you have GOLFLOG.COM on a floppy diskette or in a directory
on your hard drive, simply type GOLFLOG and press your <Enter> Key.
This will bring up the Main Menu screen where you will see all the
options available to you.
To get started properly you should:
1.. Enter yourself as the first Golfer Record
2.. Enter at least one Course Record (See note below)
3.. Enter at least one Game Record
NOTE: Course Records and Golfer Records need only be entered one
time. From then on, the Course and Golfer will be available
to you along with any others you may have recorded.
See the CHANGES.TXT file for additional instructions if you're
upgrading from a previous version of GolfLog.

WHAT GolfLog DOES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog is a database program that allows a Golfer to keep up
with the progress of his/her game in several different ways. It
keeps detailed accounts of each game and allows the user to pull
up any Game Record for an extensive review of that particular game.
The Summary of all games provides the Golfer with the totals of
many different facets of the game. If you want to know how many
strokes you have made since you started keeping records, it's in
the Summary. Other interesting items are also provided such as
the average strokes per hole for all the holes you've recorded,
the totals of all the Pars, Birdies, Bogeys, etc. for an entire
golfing season. This summary will probably be the most interesting
and informative source of game progress you will ever be able to
find. Need to know how much you've spent on Green Fees and/or
Cart Rental Fees? It's right there in the "Summary".
You can pull up for review, the score card for any game you've
recorded and check to see just what the score was on any hole you
wish. Need to know WHO you played what COURSE with on a given
DATE and what your SCORE was? No problem! If you entered names
of your playing partner(s) when you recorded the game, all that
information is right at your fingertips.
GolfLog will maintain stats for 8 different Golfers, 50 different
Golf Courses and 2000 different games (250 games per Golfer).
These figures represent the capabilities of GolfLog when
registered only.
USER KEY DEFINITIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<SpaceBar> ............ The "Space Bar" Key
<Enter> ............... The "Enter" or "Return" Key
<Esc> ................. The "Escape" Key
<BackSpace> ............. The "BackSpace" Key
<F10>+<Enter> ........... The "Quit to Menu" Keys
Arrow Keys (UpArrow and DownArrow) are to be used to move up
and down the Main Menu. The RightArrow and LeftArrow Keys should
NOT be used when running GolfLog as they serve no purpose.
It's only necessary to press these Keys ONCE when asked to do
so. Pressing them more than one time may cause the next screen
to appear and disappear before you get a chance to read it.
DO NOT use the "Arrow Keys" to move from one question to the
next. Each question requires an answer AND a response from
the <Enter> Key before it will record the answer. After answering
a question, press the <Enter> Key one (1) time before moving to
the next question.
Note.. The options listed on the Main Menu are "Hot Keys". This
means you DO NOT have to hit the <Enter> key after you press them.
Questions requiring a Yes or No answer are also "Hot Key"
options. They will be listed as [Y/N] Just press "Y"
or "N" without pressing the <Enter> Key afterwards.
The prompts that ask "<S>ave Start<O>ver <Q>uit/NoSave"
are also "hot keys" and do not require the <Enter> key being
pressed after the "S", "O", or "Q" keys are pressed.
** NOTE: Questions that show a prompt like "[Y/n]" indicate
that the "Y" Key is the default and by pressing the <Enter> Key
in place of pressing "Y" will get the same result. Whichever
letter is in uppercase is the default key. If both letters are
in uppercase as in "[Y/N]", then the actual letter key must be
pressed. It doesn't matter if you type "Y" or "y" as GolfLog
will convert lowercase letters to uppercase on the fly.

REQUIREMENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog requires a computer rated as being 100% IBM compatible.
Most clones on today's market will meet this requirement. GolfLog
requires a computer to have at least 512k of conventional memory.
Most computers available on the current market will have 640k as a
minimum with many offering 1 MegaByte or more. If you do encounter
memory problems running GolfLog, disable any TSR (Terminate-Stay-
Resident) programs such as pop-up clocks, note pads, menus, etc.
A minimum of 350k of free memory is an ideal operating environment
for GolfLog.
Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain the following statements:
FILES=20 (or more)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS (or directory where ANSI.SYS is located)
If running GolfLog in a multitasking environment (Windows, OS/2,
DESQview, etc.), set "Writes to screen" to YES if asked.
GolfLog has been tested on many different type and brands of
computers. These machines varied from 8086 XT machines up to
80486 machines running at 66 Mhz. All of the test machines
were rated as being 100% IBM compatible.
Add Course
~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you enter the information about the course(s)
you and the other Golfer's play on. Once a Course Record is

**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/5 *****
Add Game Record (Save your scorecards)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you enter all the information on the score card
about the game(s) you've played. You should always bring the
score card home so you can be assured of entering the correct
information about each hole you played. When entering the
number of holes played, the only two answers accepted here are
either 9 or 18. Note that results from 9 hole games are now
used in the NET figures.
When you mark your score card be sure to mark the number of
greens hit in regulation, fairways hit, putts, sand save attempts,
etc. See page [A/16] for a simple method of recording this
information for each hole.
When entering a new Game Record, after you select the Course
where the game was played, your Course Handicap will be
figured for you (only if you've recorded at least 10 full
18 hole games and have had GolfLog compute your Handicap Index).
1. Select the Golfer for whom the Game is to be recorded
by using the Up/Down Arrow Keys. When the Golfer's
name is highlighted, press <Enter>. You may also press
the <Esc> Key to exit back to the Main Menu if you wish.
2. Select the Course where the game was played by using
the Up/Down Arrow Keys. When the correct Course
is highlighted, press <Enter>. You may press the
<Esc> Key to exit back to the Main Menu.
3. The next screen to appear will be the "Add Game"
screen. Enter the date the game was played or you
may press the <Enter> Key to select the current date.
4. Enter the names of the persons playing with you.
This field is limited to 30 characters, so it's best
to use only the first names if you were playing in a
foursome. Press <Enter> if you played alone.
5. Enter the amount of the Green Fee paid. You may skip
this prompt by pressing <Enter>. By doing so will
cause a zero value to be entered into the record for the
amount of the Green Fee.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/6 *****
6. Enter the amount paid for a Golf Cart rental. If
no rental fee was paid, press <Enter> to skip to
the next prompt.
7. Enter the number of holes played. The only figures
acceptable here are 9 or 18. If you enter a number
other than 9 or 18, GolfLog will stay at this prompt
until either 9 or 18 is entered.
NOTE * If you enter 9 for the number of holes played,
you must then tell GolfLog whether you played the
first (front) nine or the second (back) nine holes.
8. Enter the score for each hole as the next prompts
appear. GolfLog will accept values of from 1 to 25
for any of the hole scores. DO NOT use the Arrow
Keys (Right/Left Arrow) to skip around on these
prompts. After you enter the score for a hole,
press <Enter> to go to the next hole. If "ESC" is in
effect, hole scores over the maximum will be adjusted.
9. Enter the number of Greens reached in regulation.
One (1) stroke is regulation for a Par 3 hole, two (2)
strokes for a Par 4 hole, and three (3) strokes for a
Par 5 hole.
10. Enter the number of Putts the Golfer had during the
entire game.
11. Enter number of Fairways you hit from the Tee Box.
DO NOT include Par 3 holes in this figure. If the
ball lands in the fairway on a Par 3 hole, this is
considered a Green missed rather than a Fairway hit.
12. Enter the number of times the Golfer was in a green-
side sand bunker.
13. Enter the number of times the Golfer made Par after
being in a greenside sand bunker.
14. If the Golfer made any wager with his/her playing
partners, enter the amount won here. If the Golfer
had several wagers with different people, enter the
total amount(s). See NOTE on page [A/7] for some
additional information regarding this entry.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/7 *****
15. If the Golfer lost any wagers, enter the total amount
lost here. (See NOTE below)
16. The next prompt will inquire if you wish to rate the
Club/Course. Press "Y" to do so or "N" to skip this
prompt. You may also press the <Enter> Key if you
wish to skip this function and have the default value
of 5 given to each of the five categories.
If you press "Y" for Yes, you MUST assign a value of
from 1 to 10 for five different categories.
The five categories are:
1. Greens
2. Fairways
3. Course Layout
4. Facilities
5. Personnel
17. The last prompt will give you the opportunity to:
Save the record by pressing the <S> Key
Start Over by pressing the <O> Key
Quit without saving the record by pressing the <Q> Key.
If the record is saved you will have added a Game Record
to the database.
This completes the adding of a Game record. To review this
record, select Item #3 from the Menu and then select the
Golfer and Game Record from the lists provided.
Wagers:
N O T E * Many times a Golfer may make several wagers with
different playing partners. When entering the Amount WON from
these wagers, DO NOT subtract the loss from one wager from the
winnings of another. For example, if you had a $5.00 wager
with one player that you won and a $3.00 wager with another
player that you lost, you should enter $5.00 for the amount
won and then enter $3.00 for the amount lost. Leave the
calculations to GolfLog to do for you.
Review Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here you will be presented a list of all Game Records in the
database. Use <UpArrow> and <DownArrow> to select the Record
you wish to review by moving the highlight bar up or down the
list then pressing the <Enter> Key. These records will be
listed in order of low score first ascending to high score at
the bottom of the list. Press <Esc> to exit to Main Menu if
you don't want to continue at this point.
NOTE: If there's scores of 100 or higher, these scores will
be listed before the low scores (due to the way MS-DOS
prefers to display numbers in sequence).
The Golfer's name will also be shown along with the date the
game was played.
You will first be shown a screen listing all the information you
entered when you first stored the record in the database. Other
information that GolfLog has compiled for you will also be shown
on this screen.
The second screen will be the score card for that game.
See Print Records [A/13] for instructions on how to print the
Game Record and Scorecard.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/9 *****
Summary
~~~~~~~
You must first select the Golfer whose summary you wish to see
by moving the highlight bar up or down the list and pressing
the <Enter> Key when the Golfers name is highlighted.
When at the list of Golfers, you can press <Esc> to exit back
to the Main Menu.
This is a summarization of all the games the selected Golfer
has played. This will probably be the most interesting screen
you will see and be the one most often referred to when you
want to see how your game is progressing from week to week.
This screen will provide over 30 different items for you to
review regarding all the games you've recorded to date.
A Summary screen is available for each Golfer in the database.
The Summary is also available for printing by using the
Print Summary option at the Main menu.
Delete Game, Golfer, Course Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you can delete Golfer, Game, and Course Records.
You will always be given the option of stopping before the
actual deletion is done. Note that when a record is deleted,
it cannot be recovered again. Also note that when a Golfer
Record is deleted, the Game Records for that Golfer will also
be deleted.
NOTE.. When you select a Record to be deleted, GolfLog saves
a copy of the current Record database and names it
GAMES.BAK, COURSE.BAK or GOLFER.BAK depending on the
type of record deleted. Note that these ".BAK" files
will contain a copy of every record in the current file
of the selected type.
When you arrive at the list of Records available for deletion,
you can press the <Escape> Key to exit back to the Main Menu if
you change your mind. No records are deleted if the <Escape>
Key is pressed at this point.
When deleting a Game Record, you will first be presented with
a "PickList" of the Golfers in the database. Select the Golfer
whose game you wish to delete then GolfLog will present you with
another "PickList" of the selected Golfer's games. Follow the
procedures described above to complete the record deletion.

Course Handicap List
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here you will select a Golfer and, provided he/she has already
established a Handicap Index, then be shown a list of all the
Courses recorded in the database. After selecting the Golfer,
select the Course and the Course Handicap information will
appear.
If a Golfer shows to have a "0" Course Handicap, then he/she
either has not been assigned a Handicap Index by GolfLog or
he/she is a "scratch" Golfer with a Course Handicap of "0".
These Course Handicaps are what you should use when playing
the course selected.
When entering a new Game Record, the Course Handicap is
figured for you by GolfLog and will be inserted into the
record of the game being added.
Course Handicaps are figured based on the Golfers current
Handicap Index, the Slope, and the Rating of the course
being played.
The Course Handicap screen will also indicate if the Golfer
is using Equitable Stroke Control ("ESC").
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/12 ****
Display Golfer Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option will display the selected Golfer's record showing
name, age, sex, address, phone numbers, Handicap Index, their
USGA type Differential and the number of Games on record.
If the Golfer selected is 50 years old or older, the record
will indicate that the Golfer is classified as a Senior.
This has meaning when determining total scores, handicaps,
etc.
If the Golfer selected is a lady or under the age of 17, the
status line will indicate that they are a Lady and/or Junior
Golfer for the same reasons stated above.
When you arrive at the list of Golfers, you can always press
the <Escape> Key to exit back to the Main Menu.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/13 ****
Print Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option permits you to select the Game Record you wish to
print then prints the Game Record and the score card for that
game. This requires a printer capable of printing in the
standard 80 column format.
GolfLog requires a configuration file from which it gets the
Printer Port number (1 for LPT1, 2 for LPT2, or 3 for LPT3).
This file is created by GolfLog and, unless the user changes
printer ports, will never have to be changed. If it does
need to be changed, the Utilities option at the Main Menu
is used to make the necessary changes to the configuration
file. Most computers default to Printer Port 1 (LPT1) and
all the user needs to do is enter '1' when asked for the Port
number.
If you have trouble with GolfLog not printing the Game Records
or Summary, go to the Utility Menu and select option [1] and
set your Printer Port number to the one your computer uses.
Parallel Port 1 is the most commonly used. It's also listed
as LPT1 and PRN in later versions of MS-DOS.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/14 ****
Print Summary
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option allows you to select a Golfer from the database
and print his/her complete summary of all games recorded.
See the Print Records information on the preceding page [A/13],
for additional details about printing the Summary and Game
Records.
**** GolfLog ********************************* Appendix A/15 ****
Handicap Index
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you determine your USGA type Handicap Index
along with those of three other additional players if you
have them recorded in the database. You must have a minimum
of ten (10) full 18 hole games recorded in the database for
the Golfer selected before GolfLog will compute the Handicap
Index for you.
The Handicap Index determined by GolfLog should be reasonably
close to the one determined by the U.S.G.A. You will notice that
the Handicap Index provided by GolfLog is more "up to the minute"
than the official Index provided by the U.S.G.A.
NOTE ... An "official" Handicap Index can only be determined
by the U.S.G.A. Contact your local PGA Professional (or your
Club Pro) about getting an official U.S.G.A. Handicap Index.
>> A Golfer does not play off his/her Handicap Index. You must
>> determine the Course Handicap for the course being played. GolfLog
>> will do this for you when a game is recorded in the database AND
>> you have previously determined your Handicap Index.
N O T E * It's not unusual to see a Handicap Index of 12.5 with
a Course Handicap of 15.
1. Select the Golfer you wish to determine the
Handicap Index for. Press <Escape> if you wish to
exit back to the Main Menu at this point.
2. Select the Course. This should be the Course most
often played or the Golfer's "home" course. The
course selected MUST be an 18 hole course. 9 hole
courses can't be used for Handicap Index purposes.
GolfLog will, at this point, compute the selected Golfer's
Handicap Index based on either the last 10 full 18 hole games
or the last 20 full 18 hole games. If the Golfer has at least
10 games saved but less than 20, GolfLog uses the last 10 game
records that were entered in the database and match the
selected golfer's first and last name. If the selected Golfer
has 20 or more games stored in the database, GolfLog uses the
last 20 records that were entered and match the Golfer's first
and last name.
Keep Your Scorecard!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order for GolfLog to provide you with accurate information,
you have to feed it the correct data. To provide GolfLog with
correct information, you must enter it directly from your own
score card. Always bring your scorecard home with you!
Your card should have a small box for recording the score for
each hole. This box is where you need to enter the additional
information.
PAR = 4
Hit Fairway from Tee -----=> F SS <=----- Saved Par from Sand
Use FX if missed. Use SX for a missed
Score for this hole ------=> 4 Sand Save.
Missed Green in reg. -----=> GX P1 <=----- Number of Putts
Use G if hit in reg.
The above example would show the following:
1. The Golfer's drive landed in the fairway
2. The 2nd shot landed in a Sand Bunker
3. The Green was NOT hit on the 2nd shot
4. The Golfer blasted out of a Sand Bunker and
one-putted to save Par.
--------------------------------------------------------------
PAR = 4
Missed Fairway from Tee --=> FX
Score for this hole ------=> 5
Hit Green in regulation --=> G P3 <=----- Number of Putts
Use GX if missed
The above example would show the following:
1. The Golfer's drive did NOT land in the fairway.
2. The 2nd shot landed on the Green.
3. The Golfer had 3 Putts and made Bogey for this hole.
