┌──────────────────────────┐
│ DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE │
└──────────────────────────┘
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
some request registration while others require it, some specify a
maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with
printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead
is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

=================================================
OVERVIEW
=================================================
The Computer System Manager (CSM) is an application designed for
computer users both at home or in the business used to keep track of
all computer systems and the hardware (accessories) that have been
installed into them and the software that they are licensed to use.
Please note that this program IS NOT a disk manager but rather a tool
to either be used by businesses or at home to keep track of hardware
and software on computer systems.
Simple and straight forward menuing software allows you to add or
update records in the system using arrow keys and function keys to all
the features of the system.
Many standard reports are provided in different sequences to list
items from the files. In fact included in the software a Free Form
Report generator which will allow you to design, run and save your own
reports.
Several configuration options allow to configure CSM to your
specifications including printer support to support any printer on the
market.
Features
========
- Simple to use pull down menus and pop-up windows
- Context sensitive help available on all screens
- Organize information at the machine or system level
- Organize hardware information, disk drives, cards,
memory, printers, etc. installed on each system.
- Organize software information, determine what software
is licensed to each system
- Each system can contain as much information as needed
- Up to 2 billion entries can be entered into each of
the databases. You are only limited by the size of the
hard drive you are running the software on.
- Locating records is easy using the menus.
- Print options allow you to print on any printer that may
be available. Provided standard are the printer setups

for HP, IBM and several others.
- Many standard reports are provided. If you have specific
requirements then you can use the Free Form Report
generator and design your own.
- Complete tools are provided to manage your files and keep
them performing at there best.
- Fully configurable including screen color selection,
printer setup and more.
Installation
============
Please see the accompanying documentation for complete installation
instructions.
When the installation is complete:
- Review the VENDOR, SOFTWARE and HARDWARE tables
- Review and set the options file (Press [F6]) you
must set the printer to your own configuration
or some of the reports will not fit on regular paper.
- If the version of the software you installed had
sample files please review these to get a feel of how
the program works. If you want to delete these files
and start over then the following DOS commands can
be entered from the CSM directory:
DELETE SOFTW.DBF
DELETE HARDW.DBF
DELETE SYSTEM.DBF
And the next time you start up CSM add a U to the
command line as follows:
CSM U
This will build the new files for you.
System Requirements
===================
MS/DOS or PC/DOS 3.3 or higher
At least 2mb minimum hard disk space. Actual amount will depend on
the size of the various collections.
Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 3
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any standard printer including HP laser.
One floppy drive either 3 1/2 or 5 1/4 any density.
Limitations
===========
There are no real limitations in the CSM software. You may store as
much information as you like and are only limited by the amount of
hard disk space you have. Each of the Files may contain a maximum of
2 billion records which should be plenty for most users or businesses.
In the standard version of CSM only the Free Form report generator may
print to a network (Novell) printer. If you would like full network
(Novell) support contact us for special pricing.
Browsing The Files
==================
As you begin to add records to the various files the software will
automatically put you into a browse mode (when there is at least one
record). The following is an example of the browse screen for the
Vendor Table:
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Vendor Table ║
╠═══════════════╤═══════════════════════════════════╣
║ Vendor Name │ Full name of Vendor ║
╟───────────────┼───────────────────────────────────╢

║CA │Computer Associates ║
║CompUSA │CompUSA ║
║Intiut │Intuit ║
║Maxstor │Maxstor ║
║MicroSoft │MicroSoft ║
║SPC │Software Publishing, Inc ║
╚═══════════════╧═══════════════════════════════════╝
By using the [UpArrow] and [DownArrow] keys you can move to different
records in the file. Using the [PgUp] and [PgDn] keys you can move a
full screen at a time (about 16 records), and using [ALT]-[PgUp] or
[ALT]-[PgDn] you can move to the first record or last record in the
file. When you have found the record you would like to view or change
(indicated by highlighting) press the [ENTER] key. The record will now
be displayed.
Also note at the bottom of the screen there is a field used for
searching. If you have a large file you can use this field to
position the highlighted item to a range of records. For example if
you are in the SYSTEM file and have used the select key (see below)
for System ID and you are looking for a SYSTEM-01 then enter into this
Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 4
----------------------------------------------------------------------
field SYS or SYST or SYSTE or SYSTEM and the highlighted item will be
the first item. You can use this feature to move quickly through the
files.
If you would like to view records in a different order press the [F10]
key and a small menu will appear at the lower right hand corner of the
screen giving you the choices for the file you are browsing. The
following example illustrates the alternates for the Software file:
┌>Select Key<─┐
│ Product Name│
│ Program Type│
└─────────────┘
Each file in CSM has different selection keys so you will need to
experiment as to what select keys are best for you.
Screen Saver
============
After 2 minutes of inactivity CSM will display the following screen:
┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ The screen has been saved │
│ Press the spacebar to resume │
└──────────────────────────────┘
This box will move around the screen in a random pattern until such
time as you press the [SPACE] key at which time you will return back
to
the same screen you were at.

DATA ENTRY OF INFORMATION
=================================================
This is the menu that you will used to select the various files for
data entry (adding, changing, or deleting records) from the system.
Up selecting this menu item the following menu will appear:
╔═══════════════════════════╗
║ System File ║
║ Software Records ║
║ Hardware Records ║
╚═══════════════════════════╝
The first menu item under the DATA ENTRY item is SYSTEM. CSM has an
organization for keeping records together and can be summarized as
follows:
To add either hardware or software records there must
be a corresponding SYSTEM record to be used.
To delete a system record ALL of the hardware and
software records must either be deleted or reassigned
to another SYSTEM record.
Hardware and Software records are not linked together
with one another.
If you are using CSM for a business and you have items that do not
belong to a system we suggest that you create a dummy SYSTEM record
say using the SYSTEM ID of "UNASSIGNED" and place all those items
under this system.

========================
(This procedure may be accessed by pressing the [F3] HotKey)
This Pop-up Phone Directory will allow you to maintain a phone
database with names, addresses, and phone numbers of business and
personal contacts. If you have a modem, you can dial any of the above
phone numbers in the database. You may also print a pocket sized phone
directory of all the names in the database.

[ALT]-[R] Redial
[ALT]-[S] Set up communication parameters
The field "LD" is for long-distance. In situations where the person
has the same area code as you, yet is a long-distance call anyway, you
would want to set the "LD" field for that person to "Y". The value of
this field won't matter if the person has a different area code than
you.
AUTO-DIAL ******** CAUTION ********
IF YOU HAVE A MODEM, you can select [ALT]-[P] and dial the highlighted
number. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A MODEM, and press [ALT]-[P], this program
will throw you out and you will go back to DOS. ALL GOOD PROGRAMS HAVE
A WORK-AROUND. HERE'S MINE - IF YOU DON'T HAVE A MODEM, DON'T PRESS
[ALT]-[P]!!
COMMUNICATION PARAMETERS
------------------------
Check these settings before you attempt to use the auto-dialer.
They include,...
PBX: If this is on, all numbers dialed will be preceded by a "9"
and a half second pause. Default is off.
Modem initialization string: Sent to the modem before dialing the
number. Default is "ATZ".
Modem hang-up string: Sent to the modem after the call is
terminated. Default is "ATH".
Tone/Pulse: Set this to "T" for tone dialing, to "P" for pulse
dialing. The default is "T".
COM Port: Selects the COM Port to use for dialing. Default is 1.
Local Area Code: Your area code.
Timing Delay: This parameter exists because some modems like to
wait longer than others between commands. The default is 1
second. If you are experiencing timing problems, try setting
this to 1.50 or 2.0 seconds.

The Utilities menu is used to select general purpose functions that
are not directly related to the Hardware Software Information Manager.
When this menu item is selected the following menu will appear:
╔═══════════════════════════╗
║ Free Form Report Generator║
║ Reorganize/Sort ║
║ Set Screen Colors ║
║ Set Printer ║
╚═══════════════════════════╝
These functions include:
Free Form Report Generator
Reorganize/Sort

Add/Change Printer Configurations
Free Form Report Generator
==========================
Each report is based on a primary database you select from a window.
You select the fields you want in the report, specify upper and lower
limits of field values to select for the report, and you select a
printer configuration. If the configuration you want does not exist,
you can add a new one.
You can define as many reports as you want for each file. All reports
print in a columnar format with headings. Based on the printer
configuration you select, an effort will be made to print one record
per line by switching between print sizes and types. If a complete
record does not fit on one line, it will wrap to the next line between
two fields.
SAMPLE USAGE
------------
First, highlight "User-Defined Reports" and press [ENTER]. You will
see the following screen with the heading "List of Files". These are

Reorganize/Sort
===============
From time to time the files in Hardware/Software Information Manager
must be reorganized or sorted. If you find that you have lost some
records (maybe you turned off your machine or had a power failure)
then this function can be used to rebuild all the indexes in the
system.
This function will also optimize disk space by unused space from the
files (when records are deleted the disk space that they occupy does
not go away)
If any of the following situations occur then it is time to sort the
files:
It appears that records seem to be missing from one or
more files.
You have been deleting a lot of records.
You have been changing a lot of records.
This process should only take a few minutes depending on the size
(number of records) of your files. You will see messages indicating
progress as the sorting is processing.

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The Printer Setup Utility will allow you to define your own printer
configurations for the Computer System Manager. Four standard
configurations come standard with the product
The Printer Setup Utility is used by both the Free Form Report
generator and reports that need more than 80 characters to print, such
as the wide reports.
The Printer Setup Utility is selected directly from the submenu of
MISC.
When you are ready to use this function, highlight PRINTER SETUP, then
press [ENTER]. Once selected, the list of printer configurations will
appear.
The software uses three different setup strings to determine how to
lay out lines of text before the actual printing begins. These
strings also determine when a page is full and when to skip to the
Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 44
----------------------------------------------------------------------
next page, and finally what codes (escape sequences) need to be sent
to the printer also. The software will automatically select the
proper setup string and page size that best fits the report. If one
line of the report will fit in the width specified by WIDTH 1, the
level 1 Setup String will be used. If the line of the report is too
wide for the level 1 Width, but less than or equal to the Level 2
Width, the Level 2 Setup String will be used. If the line of the
report is too wide for the level 2 Width, but less than or equal to
the Level 3 Width, the Level 3 Setup String will be used.
If the report is still too wide, the software will utilize more than
one line on the page per printed record printed, and will print on
each line as many fields as will fit without breaking, and then will
wrap to the next line. If a line has to wrap to the next line, the
software will adjust the number of lines per page to compensate for
the fact that fewer records will fit on a page.
You can force the software to use the same Setup String, Width and
Line all the time by setting all three levels to the same value. This
is a good idea when you are using 80 column paper in a 130 column
printer.
Printer Setup Strings
---------------------
To follow along with this example, you need to select the printer with
the configuration ID of "HP", printer name "Hewlett Packard Laser Jet
II" from the list of printer configurations. Once selected, read the
following explanation of the Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Width and
Length Fields.
Notice the /027 in each of the Setup Strings and the Reset String.
Anytime you want to include a character in a string that cannot be
entered through the keyboard, you can enter a backslash followed by
the character's ASCII value. You MUST use three positions for the
ASCII value even if is less than 100. On a Hewlett Packard Laser
Printer, the Escape key, which acts as a control character, has an
ASCII value of 27. /027 was entered because three positions need to
be filled. This value (/027) tells the printer that the text to
follow is not to be printed, but is to interpreted as configuration
information
The Level 1 Setup String tells the software to set the printer to
Courier font, that 80 characters will fit on one line and that no more
than 55 lines of the page will be used.
The Level 2 Setup String tells the software to switch to the 16.6
characters per inch Pica font and that 130 characters will fit on one
line.
The Level 3 Setup String tells the software to remain at 16.6
characters per inch, but to switch to Landscape (sideways) printing.
Computer System Manager - Ver 1.4 Page 45
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, 170 characters will fit on one line (Width = 170) and the page
length will be reduced (Length = 40).

The Letter Writer
=================
The bad news is that this is not WordPerfect. The good news is that
this is not WordPerfect. Hopefully, this will be a lot easier to
master.
Theoretically, this program can write files up to 64K. But, and this
is a big BUT, you must have enough memory in your RAM to do it. You
must have enough available RAM equal to twice the size of the file you
are editing. In most cases this will never be a problem. But you might
not be able to write THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL.

If you attempt to write to a file that already exists, or append from
a file that does not exist, you will get a message to that effect.

ALT-B: BLOCK COMMANDS
---------------------
Blocks of text may be deleted, copied, moved, printed, or case
converted. You must first mark a block of text by pressing [ALT]-[B]
at the beginning, move the cursor to the end of the block and press
[ALT]-[B] again. If you wish to move or copy this block of text, move
the cursor to the target position, then press [ALT]-[B] again. You
will see a pop-up menu of block commands ("Move", "Copy", "Kill",
"Print", "Uppercase", Lowercase", "Erase Markers"). Select one of them
by moving the highlight bar to it, and press [ENTER].
ALT-F: FIELD INSERTION FOR MAIL MERGING
---------------------------------------
You can easily insert fields from the "Who I Know" database into your
documents to create merge mailings.
First move the cursor to the location where you wish to insert the
field. Then press [ALT]-[F] to display a window containing all
available field names. Move the highlight bar to the desired field
name and press [ENTER] to insert it, or press [ESC] to exit without
inserting a field.
Notice that the field name is surrounded by curly braces
("{"Smith"}"). When the document is printed, anything surrounded by
the curly braces will be replaced by the actual contents of the field.
If you have inserted fields into your document for Mail Merging and
press [ALT]-[P] to print, you will be asked if you want to print more
than one document. Pressing [Y] will call the "File Filter" program.
This program is discussed later.
ALT-T: WORD WRAP
-----------------
The Word Wrap mode is "on" when you enter this option. To turn them
off press [ALT]-[T], turn it back on by pressing [ALT]-[T] again.
INSERT MODE
-----------
To change from Insert to Typeover mode and back again, press [INS],
then [CTRL]-[W], then you will be asked "The name of the file to write
to". Leave it blank and press [ENTER]. (I know what you're thinking,
"What a rigamaroll", but for now this is the nature of the beast. I'll
work on this, try to make it simple by the next release.
ALT-L: PAGE LENGTH
------------------
The page length is set at 60 lines when you enter this option. You can
change it at any time by pressing [ALT]-[L].

ALT-M: MARGINS
--------------
The start up margins for the printer are set at left column 1 and
right column 80. However you can change these by pressing [ALT]-[M]
and entering the desired settings. When you change them the on-screen
display will adjust to reflect the changes. You may use larger values
than would appear on the 80 column screen. In such instances you
should toggle word wrap "off" and scroll to the right to display text
beyond the on-screen right margin. The current values of the margins
appears on the status line.
ALT-P: PRINTING
---------------
You may print the current file at any time by pressing [ALT]-[P].
Printing may be aborted at any time by pressing [ESC]. The format of
the printed page is determined by the current settings of the page
length and margins.
If you have inserted field in this document and wish to print a mail
merging, a filter will appear here to allow you to select which
records will be printed. (It is explained later in this chapter. (See
"FILE FILTER")
ALT-R: SEARCH AND REPLACE
-------------------------
You can search for all or only specific occurrences of a character
string. When you press [ALT]-[R], you will be prompted to first enter
the search string, then the replacement string. You will then be asked
if you want to replace all occurrences of the search string. If you
select [N]o, you will be prompted to enter the number of occurrences
to replace. Please note that the search begins at the top of the file
and continues either to the end of the file or until the number of
occurrences you specified has been replaced.
ALT-Y: CURRENT DIRECTORY / WILDCARD
-----------------------------------
This little word processor gives you the ability to change the working
directory or filemask at any time. When you first enter it, the
current directory will be set to the default DOS directory, and the
wildcard will be set to "*.*". If you would like to change either the
directory where this program looks for files or the wildcard used
(e.g., "*.txt", "*.doc"), press [ALT]-[Y] and enter the new
information. You do not have to enter slashes ("\") in front or back
of the directory UNLESS you include a wildcard.
For example, to change the current directory to "\MYSTUFF\", you only
need to enter "MYSTUFF" (no quotes). However, if you want the program
to only look for ".LET" files in the MYSTUFF directory, you must enter
"\MYSTUFF\*.LET".
