Dox for PCB-FPS v1.0: (READ BETA.DOC TOO!)
The File Point System is not for the beginner as its installation is
complicated to say the least. On these pages I will tell you the steps needed
to properly install FPS in your PCB 15.1 or above system, but I have no real
intentions of holding your hand through every step. So if your up to it, before
we start, unzip all the files in the release package to a new sub-directory
on your hard drive with PCBoard, IN MY EXAMPLES I USE: C:\PCB\PPL\FPS
First you must have the PSA 'Notes' installed in your user base, for the
system to work at all, as the FPS stores the user's file points in the 4th
line of the notes. If your unsure how to do this, load up PCBSM.EXE and goto
the user records and then PSA's and install 'NOTES'.
Next, bring up your favorite text editor and re-configure the PCBFPS.CFG
file, this file is really simple and only the top 5 lines are important. The
first line is the path to your download.txt, FPS uses this file to locate the
uploaders of your files, since PCB doesn't maintain a filebase. If you trim
this file every month or so, no problem as most uploads see 90% of their
downloading in the first week anyways. This file can grow very large as time
goes on and this slows FPS down, so I also have included a small .EXE called
CLEANDL.EXE to help keep the FPS working as fast as possible, which will be
discussed later on in these docs.
The second line of the PCBFPS.CFG file is the number of bytes to equal
one file point when a user is downloading, ie: if you enter the number 50000
on this line the user will be charged 1 file point for every 50k in size the
file is. So a 1.4 megs file would cost 28 file points if set to 50000.
The third line is also a number, this one is the default number of file
points to be given to new users, since you are just installing this for the
first time, this number will represent the file points given to all users as
they sign on after this installation is complete. ie: entering a 500 here
will give all users 500 file points to start off, remember this includes new
users, so don't get too generous.
The fourth line again is a number used to represent the number of bytes
required for a user to recieve 1 file point in upload commission he will
receive immediattly after he uploads it. This serves as good insentive to
upload to your system, but don't set this number too low as these points will
be awarded regardless of the quality of the file. Be sure if you are running
a limited time board (0-7dayz) that your upload processor checks the dates etc
of the uploaded files. If it fails this test, no points will be awarded.
The fifth and final important line of the PCBFPS.CFG file is a percent,
without a percent sign, that represents the percent of the file point cost
the downloader pays, that will be given to the uploader as commission! This
is the single best way to get file points and will prove to be a major
incentive to get the hot files to your system first! ie: a file that cost
14 file points to download (and this number set to 50) would give the uploader
7 file points every time its downloaded!
Below is my current setup on my system:
C:\PCB\MAIN
100000
200
100000
50
The end result of this system would be that those members that contribute
quality, in demand, files to your system will never have any file point worrys
and the users that don't upload, or who's uploads are unwanted, un-popular
crap will be at best be living within a 1:1 ratio. (assuming you give as much
file point credits for uploading as you charge to download)
File points also make a great way to charge for access, if you're into
that type of stuff.
The entire system consisted of 9 PPE's, 3 EXE's, 2 Display files, and
the above mentioned CFG file. Are you scared? If so bail out now, else its
on with the show!
I have written a seperate small .DOC file for each of the PPE's/EXE's
that form the FPS (File Point System). Each one of these .DOC files explain
how and where to install each one of the utilitys. Good Luck! A multitasker
will help you out in the install alot, so you can read and do, without always
exiting your viewer to do each step. Most of the PPE's also have a another
file by the same name with the extension .PCB, these files contain the text
strings (and color codes) used for that PPE, allowing you to colorize or
edit to your own taste.
