Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you ever wish for a user friendly and powerful File Area Editor
for your PC-Board BBS? One that would provide an easy way to add new
files, edit descriptions, do the general maintenance of your file
conferences? Well, here it is!
It has a multitude of options, some of which are:
* Tag files to work on
* Move files through file areas/conferences
* Copy files
* Edit Descriptions
* Batch Descriptions with Auto Numbering capability
* Reorder File Areas
* Manipulate ARJ/LZH/SQZ/ZIP Archives
* View PCX/BMP/TIF/GIF/LBM graphic files
* Creation of new file areas
* Support for importing/exporting FILE_ID.DIZ description file
* Remove old or offline files
* Create Master file listings with configurable statistics.
* 5 Different sorting methods!
* Easy creation of new file areas
* Extremely configurable!
This program has all the options YOU need to maintain your file
areas, and then some! Do you need to remove those bbs ads from an
archive? FAE can do it! Do you want to delete a file and remove the
credit from the person who sent it? This program does that too! If you
can't find a special function you want, simply tell the author and he
will add it in a future version.
FAE supports PC-Board 14.5 and 15.0 systems. It recognizes the
different sizes of the PCBFILER.DEF file from these two versions, and
saves it using the appropriate size.
The history file (HISTORY.DOC) contains all changes made (new
features, bug fixes, etc.) since the last version.
You can divide the program in three parts: the Conference
Selection, the File Area Selection, and the Files Management section.
Press F1 from anywhere to get on-line help.
Registration
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since this program will be VERY useful to PC-Board Sysops, I
require a registration fee of 40$ US (40$ Canadian), and 5$ for
shipping. If you own a modem, you can get your registered version on the
support BBS once I receive the registration fee (thus saving the 5$
shipping cost).
The registered version has some additional features, for example:
* the Archive Manager allows you to view/delete/extract files.
* you can have a selection window when mass uploading files. With
this window, you can tag files to put on-line, view contents (with
archive manager if it is a compressed file) . . .
* the ability to select a default sorting method for when you use F3
in the file selection menu and in the conference selection menu.
* the ability to sort files 5 different ways. You can sort by
filename, extension, description, date or by size.
* Anything else that I add in future versions.
Registration gives you those features plus a year of updates free.
When that year expires, additional updates are 5$ US / Year (8$
Canadian) If you wish to register this software, send a MONEY ORDER only
to:

Installation
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAE is very easy to install. When performing the installation you
have two choices, either create a directory for FAE, or copy it directly
in your PC-Board directory.
When installing FAE in it's own directory, you must indicate to DOS
where to find the program by modifying your DOS path. This is necessary
because at run-time, FAE must be able to find some files (FAE.HLP,
FAE.DAT, and sometimes FAESET.EXE).
After copying the program files to a directory, the next thing you
need to do is run the FAESET program to configure FAE for your needs.
Help is available from anywhere in FAESET by pressing the F1 key.
Using FAESET
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAESET was written specifically to configure the FAE to meet the
needs of its users. It would have been fairly easy to hard code
everything, but this program will give you a bit more flexibility when
you are using FAE. You can call FAESET from any of the main sections of
the program by pressing the F9 key.
To move through the program, use the cursor keys to highlight the
command that you want and press ENTER to edit/access that line/block.
Also, hitting ESCape when editing a line will restore its previous
contents. Pressing ESC while moving through a block will return you to
the previous menu. Now, let's go through the 3 blocks of this program.
Default Text
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAE allows you to configure some text strings that it uses. Thus,
you have this section to allow you to choose what you want the FAE to
write in certain cases.
File Description: Default file description when mass uploading.
──────────────── When using the "Use FILE_ID" option, FAE uses
this description only if no FILE_ID.DIZ is found.
FAE Default: "No Description Given"
Uploader Name: When mass uploading files, FAE will append the name
───────────── entered here to the description of the file using an
"Uploaded by: " line. Leave this field blank and FAE will not add
any uploader information to the description.
FAE Default: <<BLANK>>
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 8 ]=-=-=-
Default Options
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When designing FAE, I decided to make the program as versatile as
possible, because sysops do have preferences. In this section, you have
a multitude of things that you can configure, here they are:
Min Offline: Specify the minimum percentage of files offline in an
─────────── area for it to be considered an offline file area.
It's used with the "Offline Scan" toggle, when using the "remove
offline" command. Please see "Offline Scan" for more details.
FAE Default: 0% (inactive)
Sort Method: When you sort file areas using F3, FAE will
─────────── automatically use this sorting method. Available
sorting methods are: by filename, extension, description, date
sent, file size in ascending or descending fashion.
FAE Default: by filename (Asc).
Mass Upload: Default method for mass uploads. This option is valid
─────────── when entering an empty file area, when FAE asks if it
should search for new files. If you answer yes, it uses the method
that you select here.
All Files - Uploads all files that are on disk but not
on-line.
Select Files- Lets you see the files you can upload and
select the ones that you want on-line.
FAE Default: Select Files
Offline Scan: This option says if the FAE should scan the current
──────────── area to figure out if it is an offline file area.
Using the value specified in "Min Offline", when a possible offline
file area is found, you are prompted wether or not you wish to
continue with the procedure.
FAE Default: Don't Scan Area
Archive Sort: FAE uses this field when loading files in the
──────────── archive manager. Available sorting methods are: by
filename, extension, path (if there are any), and finally, unsorted
(in the order the files were originally in the archive).
FAE Default: Unsorted
File Listing: This option is active, when the FAE displays the list
──────────── in the file selection menu, it checks if the file
exists and if it doesn't, instead of displaying the size, it writes
"-Off-".
FAE Default: Mark Offline Files
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 9 ]=-=-=-
Default Options (Continued...)
Use FILE_ID: With this toggle on, when mass uploading files, FAE
─────────── will check if a "FILE_ID.DIZ" file is present in the
current archive. If it finds one, it extracts the file and puts it
as the file description.
FAE Default: Ignore FILE_ID.DIZ
Sort Comments: If you have comment lines in a file area, use this
───────────── option! When using it, FAE will ignore comment
lines when sorting, it will sort around them automatically. When
not using this option, FAE sorts the entire file list, EVEN comment
lines (same as PCBFILER).
FAE Default: Around comment lines
Scan Trash: With this toggle, when deleting a file in an archive,
────────── you have the choice of putting that filename in the
trashcan file. This option will scan to see if it is already
present in the trashcan.
FAE Default: Scan Trash File
Save Changes: This toggle tells FAE wether prompt you before saving
──────────── changes made to a file area, or to save all changes
automatically. Use this option with caution, it's better have FAE
prompt you before taking action.
FAE Default: Confirm Save
External Programs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAE sometimes needs other programs to function adequately and you
can configure some of them here. You cannot configure the names of the
archive programs (i.e., PKZIP, ARJ, etc.) for obvious reasons.
Text Viewer: This is for the complete path to your favorite text
─────────── viewer. Remember, you need a text VIEWER, not an
EDITOR, mainly because if you make changes to the file, FAE does
not update the archive.
FAE Default: "LIST.COM" (if found in path) or <<BLANK>>
Extract Dir: This is the default extraction directory for the
─────────── Archive Manager. You can also change it by hitting
'P' in the archive submenu. By default, this field is blank, so
FAE will extract the files in the current directory (unless you
change it once in the archive manager).
FAE Default: <<BLANK>>
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 10 ]=-=-=-
External Programs (Continued...)
Trash File : You can use this field to specify the path and name of
────────── the BBS ads file. This file contains the names of
miscellaneous files that are sometimes added to promote a BBS. If
you already have a similar file for your BBS, then all you have to
do is specify the complete path and name of it.
FAE Default: "BBSADS.TXT"
Color Configuration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAESET also allows you to change the colors of the DIR files, in
the same style as PCBFILER. To use this option, the file PCBFILER.DEF
must be in your DOS path. If it is not, then the program will not allow
you to make any modifications.
To change the colors, all you have to do, is move to the block of
text you want to change by using the cursor keys. Then, use SHIFT+LEFT
or SHIFT+RIGHT to change the background color. To modify the
foreground, use SHIFT+UP or SHIFT+DOWN. Finally, use ESCAPE when you
are finished setting up the colors.
Master File Listing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAE can create a master file list by pressing F5 at the conference
menu, or by adding "/LIST" as command line parameter. This section of
FAESET allows you to configure some of the things that are in the file
listings.
List Name: Allows you to select the name of the file that will
───────── contain the master file list.
FAE Default: "PCBFILES.LST"
List Confer.: You can use this option to choose which conferences
──────────── FAE should include in the list. Leaving this field
blank tells the program that you want to include ALL conferences.
To specify the conferences to process, you can use different
methods. For example, "0-2,4" would use conferences 0 to 2 as well
as conference 4.
FAE Default: "0" (Include only the Main Conference)
Empty Text: When FAE creates the master file list, it might
────────── sometimes encounter an empty area. Here, you can
configure the text FAE writes in these cases.
FAE Default: "No files in this area!"
Area Stats: This toggle tells FAE wether or not to include the
────────── statistics for every area processed.
FAE Default: No
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 11 ]=-=-=-
Master File Listing (Continued...)
Confer. Stats: This toggle is used to determine if the statistics
───────────── for every conference should be put in the file list.
FAE Default: Yes
Total Stats: You can set this toggle on if you want the statistics
─────────── for ALL file areas displayed at the end of the
listing.
FAE Default: Yes
Using the FAE.INI file
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For even more configurability, FAE allows you to configure it's use
through the FAE.INI file. This is a straight ASCII text file containing
instructions for the program. The following commands are available:
[DefaultDisplay]: This instruction allows you to select the display
──────────────── that FAE will use when you enter a file area.
Setting this to 1 makes the program display the list with the file
size. Using the value 2 will make FAE display the list with the
file dates.
Example: [DefaultDisplay] = 1
[LoadConferences]: This parameter allows you to specify which
───────────────── conferences FAE should load in the conference
selection menu. The best use for this feature is when you have a
lot of conferences that have the exact same file areas as the "Main
Board". To specify the list of conferences, use the same method of
entry as usual (ie: 0,2-4 will load 0, 2, 3 and 4) you are limited
to a maximum length of 80 characters.
Example: [LoadConferences] = 0,10-15,20,23
[UpdateExitSize]: This toggle will tell FAE if it should
──────────────── automatically update the size of all files when
saving a file area. This flag will also provide a means to put
files back on-line if they were either 'OFF-LINE' or 'DELETED'.
Example: [UpdateExitSize] = Yes
[DescriptionFile] allows you to specify the name of the description
───────────────── file FAE will create when using the "Save
Description File" command. The default is FILE_ID.DIZ, but if you
prefer, you can create a DESC.SDI or anything else. The name must
not exceed 12 characters...
Example: [DescriptionFile] = FILE_ID.DIZ
[AutoKillDir] makes FAE remove its temporary directory #FAE# if it
───────────── finds one instead of prompting you. With this option
on, you don't have to use the /KILLDIR parameter.
Example: [AutoKillDir] = Yes
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 12 ]=-=-=-
[MakeDIRBackup] will force FAE to create a backup of a DIR file
─────────────── before it loads it in. FAE doesn't allow you to
overwrite a backup file without your authorisation.
Example: [MakeDIRBackup] = No
[BackupDirectory] Allows you to tell FAE where to create a backup
───────────────── of your DIR files. If this path does not exist,
FAE will create it automatically. The option to make backups
automatically is only available in the registered version.
Example: [BackupDirectory] = D:\PCBOARD\FILES\BACKUP\
[UseDLPaths] tells FAE to search all the download paths to
──────────── determine if a file is on-line or not. This option is
especially useful if you run a large BBS with areas that are spread
out through multiple directories. If an area uses only the attached
directory, you can leave this toggle to "No".
Example: [UseDLPaths] = No
[AutoIndex] tells FAE to automatically update the IDX file if
─────────── changes were made to a file area. This can be used in
the registered version only.
Example: [AutoIndex] = Yes
[Extensions]: This parameter is multi-line. Meaning that when you
──────────── must write [EndExtensions] to mark the end of the
instructions. Using this command tells FAE which external programs
to execute when it encounters a certain file extension when you use
the view command. You must have a period at the beginning of the
extension of FAE will ignore the line. It is also possible to pass
the following parameters to the program FAE executes:
%1 = Complete name and path of highlited file
%2 = Only the file name of current file (no path)
In the following example:
[Extensions]
.MOD = C:\MODS\MP %1
[EndExtensions]
You are telling FAE to shell to the program C:\MODS\MP when it
encounters the .MOD file extension.
[NoUploads]: This option is used when mass uploading new files. It
─────────── allows you to tell FAE which files you want it to
ignore. You can use wildcards (?,*) in the specified filenames.
To mark the end of your list, you must use [EndNoUploads].
Example:
[NoUploads]
*.BAK
[EndNoUploads]

Command Line Parameters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FAE also has support for some command line switches. The program
processes these commands in sequence (meaning you can specify more than
one) and exits when it's completes the job.
To specify the file conferences to process, use the same method as
in FAESET when you indicate the conferences to include in the master
file list.
Example: FAE /NEW:0,3,5-7 --> This command will upload
new files in conferences
0,3 and 5 to 7.
The available commands are preceded by a slash (/) and when you need to
specify conferences to process, they are ended by a colon (:).
? : Display help screen. It shows you all available
commands.
LIST : Generate master file list. You don't need to specify any
──── conferences to process. FAE will automatically use the list
you specified in FAESET.
NEW : Mass upload new files. FAE processes all the file areas
──── in the conferences that you specify on the command line.
Example: FAE /NEW:0 --> Upload new files in the "Main
Board" conference.
SORT : Sort file areas in the specified conferences. For now, it
──── sorts by file name, but FAE will be able to use the default
sorting method for each area.
Example: FAE /SORT:0,2 -> Sorts conferences 0 and 2.
CLEAN: Remove offline files in the specified conferences.
─────
Example: FAE /CLEAN:1 -> Removes offline files in
conference #1.
KILLDIR: This switch will force FAE to automatically remove the
─────── #FAE# temporary directory if it is present.
INDEX: Make FAE create .IDX files for all file areas, in all
───── conferences.
You can also combine all the previous parameters and FAE will
process them in sequence. When using the /? switch, the program
terminates automatically after displaying the help screen.
Example: FAE /NEW:0 /SORT:0-3 /CLEAN:0 /LIST
This example will mass upload new files in conference 0, sort
conferences 0 to 3, remove offline files in conference 0 and create the
master file list.
Conference Selection Menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you will find yourself when you load the program.
From this menu you select which conference you wish to work on or you
can do global conference commands. They available functions here are:
F2: Add New Files: You can mass upload all offline files for every file
───────────── area in a conference when you use this option. It
will show you the name of the current area it is working on, and
the number of files added.
The file description will be the one you entered in the setup
program. When your are using the load FILE_ID.DIZ toggle, and a
description file is found, FAE will use it instead.
Finally, you can use CTRL+F2 to mass upload files in all tagged
conferences.
F3: Sort All Areas: Eventually, you might need to sort your file areas.
────────────── Well, this should do the trick. It uses the method
you specified in FAESET. To abort the sorting, hit escape anytime
and the current file area will remain partially sorted. It's also
possible to sort all tagged conferences by using CTRL+F3.
F4: Remove Offline Files: This will scan the areas and remove the files
──────────────────── that are offline. Be careful not to use this
if you have an "Offline File" area, as it will remove all of the
files for obvious reasons. As an extra measure of protection, you
can use the MIN OFFLINE and OFFLINE SCAN options in the setup
program. As usual, CTRL+F4 will process all tagged conferences.
F5: Create file list: This option allows you to create the master file
──────────────── list of your BBS. FAE creates the file under the
name specified in FAESET. Another way to create it is to type "FAE
/LIST" at the command line.
F6: Create IDX files: This option tells FAE to create the index files
──────────────── (.IDX) that are used since PC-Board 15.1. Using
CTRL+F6 will process all tagged conferences.
T : Tag Conference: Tags the current conference to do batch commands on
────────────── selected conferences. Using CTRL+T will tag all
available conferences.
U : Untag Conference: Untags the current conference if it was tagged.
──────────────── Using CTRL+U will untag all tagged conferences.
ALT+J: Jump to DOS: If you need to check anything in DOS while you
─────────── are in this menu, this option will perform a DOS
shell, swapping current memory to XMS/EMS/disk for maximum
available memory.
Special Notes about this section...
───────────────────────────────────
* FAE will only display conferences that have file areas in them.

File Area Selection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After selecting a conference, FAE will show you the list of file
areas in that conference. From this menu you can select which area you
wish to work on or you can do global file area commands. The commands
affecting file areas are:
D : Delete File Area: This option deletes the current file area from
──────────────── your area list and asks you if you want to delete
the data file too. If you have shared data files, do NOT delete it
(unless you really want to). You cannot use this on the "New
Uploads" file area.
E : Edit File Area Stats: You can modify anything related to the
──────────────────── highlighted area using this command. You
cannot use this on the "New Uploads" file area.
N : Create New File Area: If you wish to create a new file area, this
──────────────────── command will allow you to do so. Just fill
the appropriate information. To abort this process, hit Escape
without entering an area name.
O : Reorder File Areas: You must press this key when on the area you
────────────────── wish to move, then the highlight bar will turn
red. Move up and down with the arrow keys and press enter to
select the current position. FAE inserts the area between the
others, but it does not overwrite anything. Note that when moving
up/down you cannot move down after the "New Uploads" file area,
also, you cannot use this on the "New Uploads" area.
P : Private Uploads Area: This command will allow you to enter the
──────────────────── the private upload area of the current
conference. You can use all of the regular file selection menu
commands when using this option.
ALT+J: Jump to DOS: If you need to check anything in DOS while you
─────────── are in this menu, this option will perform a DOS
shell, swapping current memory to XMS/EMS/disk for maximum
available memory.
Special notes about this section...
────────────────────────────────
* In supporting the "New Uploads" area, I had to take out some
commands because it's a bit harder to update a text file than it is
to update a file that uses file records. Edit is out because of
this, Delete is also out for obvious reasons, Reorder is out
because the new upload section is always the last area.
Files Management Menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After selecting an area, FAE will show you the list of files that
are in the area. If none are present, FAE will ask you wether it should
upload all the files that are in the area path. If you accept, one of
two things can happen:
1. The FAE will load ALL of the files in the area.
2. The FAE will allow you to pick the files that you want
uploaded from a list of files that are present in the
directory.
With a registered version of the FAE, you can choose what you want
to happen by using the Mass Upload toggle in the FAESET program. With
the evaluation version, FAE will upload all the files.
When all the files are loaded, you can have another set of
commands, which I will try to explain clearly in the following pages.
I will include a description of ALL of the features wether they are only
available in the registered version or not.
F2: Add New Files: This will process the current file area and add all
───────────── of the files that are on the disk but not in the
file listings. FAE uploads everything, and uses either a
FILE_ID.DIZ or the default description from FAESET to describe the
program.
^F2: Add Selected Files: You can also use this command to mass upload
────────────────── new files to the current area. FAE will
display a list of files that are not on-line. Then, you can browse
through the list using the arrow keys and select the files you want
on-line. To select an entry, press 'T' to tag the file (or CTRL+T
to tag them all), you can also use 'U' (CTRL+U for all) to untag a
file. It is possible to view the contents of a file by pressing
'V' when you are on the file to process. To put the files on-line,
press ENTER, to cancel the command, press ESCape. If you press
enter with no tagged files, then FAE will upload the highlighted
file.
F3: Sort All Files: Sorts all the files by default sorting method. For
────────────── Evaluation Copies, this only sorts by filename, if
you are a registered user, you can select the default method in the
setup program. Also in the registered version, is the CTRL+F3
command that allows you to select a method before sorting.
Available sorting methods are by filename, extension, date, size,
and finally by description.
F4: Remove Offline Files: This will scan the current file area and
──────────────────── remove all the files that are NOT on the disk
and are in the file list. The FAE will ask you to confirm before
proceeding so don't forget to avoid this if you have some offline
file areas. If you used the offline scan option in FAESET, then
FAE will warn you before proceeding if there is more than the
percentage specified in the setup program.
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 16 ]=-=-=-
^F4: Remove old files: This Allows you to remove files uploaded before
──────────────── a certain date. It removes the old files from
the list AND deletes them from your HD. Registered users have the
advantage of choosing wether the FAE removes all files automati-
cally, or if the user must be prompted for each file. The
unregistered version removes all old files automatically without
confirmation.
F5: Search for text: When you use this command, you will be asked for
─────────────── a search string. After you have entered the
string, FAE will search the file area STARTING FROM THE CURRENT
POSITION and will highlight the first occurrence of the text to be
found. After, you are free to move around, or hit enter to edit
the description/comment. FAE will display an error message if it
reaches the end of the list without finding the text.
F6: Search for next: Searches for the next occurrence of the string
─────────────── entered by using the F5 command. This command
also starts from the position where you are. If the text is not
found, FAE will display a message telling you so. Please note that
when you enter a search string, it is valid through out that
session of FAE.
F7: Batch Menu: First, to get to this menu, you need at least one
────────── tagged file. You have many useful features in this
menu, and these commands will affect ALL tagged files:
* Description: This choice shall prove to be very useful if you
─────────── want to modify the description of a program with
many disks. All you have to do is enter a description and
press enter.
Also, if you wish, FAE can auto-number the description by
adding pipe commands in the description. Use |1 to have the
first number displayed, and |2 for the second number. For
example, if you want to obtain the following result: "I'm a
big program (01/10)" all you have to do is enter this as your
description "I'm a big program (|1/|2)". If the number of
tagged files is greater than 10, FAE will automatically round
out the first number with a zero. You have to sort the area
for the numbering to work correctly.
* Uploaded by: This batch command will allow you to change the
─────────── name of the uploader (which is specified by
"Uploaded by: "). If there is no uploader for the file being
processed, FAE will append a line with "Uploaded by: " and the
user name entered.
* File Ext. : If you ever change your file compression method
───────── (i.e., use ZIP instead of ARJ), all of your files
on disk are renamed. Use this option to change the extension
of the files concerned. This way you can keep the file
information, without going through the trouble of re-uploading
everything in your file areas.
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 17 ]=-=-=-
* Touch File Size: If you ever need to verify the size of
─────────────── certain files, this option allows you to do
this. Use this for example if you remove BBS ads from
compressed files and the size of the archive changes. In
these cases, PC-Board displays the old size. This option
checks all tagged files and does updates when necessary.
F8: Toggle Size/Date: This command allows you to switch the display
──────────────── between one displaying the file size, and one
that shows the file date. When you use this option, FAE refreshes
the screen to show the proper display.
RET: Edit file description: You can change the description of the
───────────────────── current file by pressing ENTER. This part
is a very important one in FAE. You have many commands that are
available when you enter what I call the FAE Edit Mode. Here's a
list:
UP - Go up one line (Multi-line descriptions)
DOWN - Go down one line (Multi-line descriptions)
CTRL+I - Insert blank line. If you are currently editing a
file description, than a description line will be
added, if you are editing a comment line, then that
will be added.
CTRL+Y - Delete Line. When you are editing a multi-line
description, FAE will remove the line you are
currently on. If you are editing a comment line,
when no comment lines remain, FAE will exit from
Editing Mode.
CTRL+LEFT - Move one word left.
CTRL+RIGHT - Move one word right.
HOME - Go to beginning of current line.
END - Go to end of current line.
INSERT - Put yourself in Insert Mode. Does not overwrite
the string.
DELETE - Remove current character.
LEFT - Move one character left.
RIGHT - Move one character right. If you are editing a
comment line, FAE will scroll the display left when
you reach column 69.
BACKSPACE - Delete previous character.
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 18 ]=-=-=-
A : Add Blank Comment Line: Use this command to add an empty comment
────────────────────── line in the file listing. FAE adds it at
the current position, and treats it the same way as a comment line
when you are in Edit Mode.
C : Copy Files: Copies the DOS file to a specified destination, you can
────────── also use CTRL+C to copy all tagged files.
D : Delete File: Delete the current file from the file list, and
─────────── prompts you for confirmation to remove it from disk.
You can also mark the file as "DELETED". If you choose to do this,
FAE will not remove the DOS file unless you ALSO specified the
"Delete DOS file".
Also, there is a flag called "Remove Credit". When you use this,
FAE searches for the user who sent the file, and if it finds him,
removes credit for the size, and for the number of uploads. FAE
learns the uploader by the "Uploaded by" line. If none is present,
then no updates can be done. Of course, CTRL+D does the same thing
on all tagged files.
G : Get FILE_ID.DIZ: This command allows you to extract a FILE_ID.DIZ
─────────────── from an archive and put the contents as the
description of the current file. Using CTRL+G processes all tagged
files, when there is a line with the uploader name, FAE saves it
and appends it at the end of the FILE_ID.DIZ description.
M : Move Files: Moves the current file from one area to another in
────────── the same conference along with its file record. FAE
displays the list of available areas, you select where you want to
move the file(s) and press ENTER to confirm. Pressing ESCape while
in the area listing cancels this command. Using CTRL+M does the
same action on all tagged files.
N : Move file to another conference: Move the current or the tagged
─────────────────────────────── files (CTRL+N) to a file area in
another conference. First, the program shows you a list of all
available conferences, press ENTER to select where to move the
files or ESCape to cancel. After, FAE will display the file areas
if the conference you chose. Here again, press ENTER after
selecting an area, or hit ESCape to cancel. The program will also
move the file physically to the directory of the area specified.
O : Move Files Offline: Moves the DOS file to a specified destination
────────────────── but leaves the file information in the current
area. Thus, putting it offline. If you use CTRL+O, all tagged
files will be processed.
P : Purify Archive: Allows you to remove unwanted BBS ads from
────────────── archives. If you use the trashcan file in the
archive manager, this function uses the same file to process the
archive. You can use CTRL+P to clean all tagged archives.
R : Rename file: This will allow you to change the filename of the
─────────── current file. If the original file exists on disk,
then FAE will rename it physically to the name entered.
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 19 ]=-=-=-
S : Save FILE_ID.DIZ: This command will make FAE save the description
──────────────── of the current file to a FILE_ID.DIZ file. It
will also put it in the archive. FAE will warn you if there is
already a FILE_ID.DIZ before overwritting it. CTRL+S will perform
the save action on all tagged files.
T : Tag File: Tags the current file to do batch commands on the
──────── selected files. Using CTRL+T will tag all the files in
the area.
U : Untag File: Untags the current file if it was tagged. Using CTRL+U
────────── will untag all tagged files.
V : View Archive/File: FAE will either display the current file in the
───────────────── file viewer, or will load it in the archive
manager. The program can also display GIF files, by loading them
to the viewer specified in FAESET. With the evaluation copy of
FAE, you can't view GIF files.
ALT+J: Jump to DOS: If you need to check anything in DOS while you
─────────── are in this menu, this option will perform a DOS
shell, swapping current memory to XMS/EMS/disk for maximum
available memory.
ALT+S: Display free space: Displays the free space of every drive
────────────────── present from C: to Z:
Special Notes about this section...
────────────────────────────────
* When editing multi-line descriptions or comment lines, FAE will
highlight the entire block that is with this file. Note that you
cannot move past the top or bottom limits of this block.
* When deleting lines with CTRL+Y, FAE will not delete the current
file if you are on a one line description file. It will only clear
the current line.
* Comment lines can be longer than the 68 columns the program
displays the text in. In these cases, when you are in edit mode,
FAE will scroll the display right when the cursor is at position
68. FAE always scrolls the entire block of comment lines, instead
of only the current line.
* If you don't use the "Uploaded by" feature of PC-Board, then you
can't remove credit from the uploader when deleting files.
* One small annoyance in FAE happens when you move files through file
areas or file conferences. This little problem occurs when the FAE
can't move the file. FAE tells you something like "ERROR: Cannot
move FILENAME.EXT". Actually, it does move the file through the
DIR files, but it does not move it physically.

Archive Manager
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The complete Archive Manager is only available to registered users.
There might be some hidden bugs I did not find, but for general
maintenance of archives, it does the job quite well. To use this
feature, you need to have PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, ARJ.EXE, LHA.EXE and
SQZ.EXE in your DOS path. If, you do not have any LZH files on your
BBS, you don't need LHA.EXE. This might seem stupid to mention, but I
don't want people panicking over this. In future versions, there might
be an Edit command, and a virus scanner. But for now, here are the
current functions:
RET: View File: Extracts the current file and loads it into the external
───────── viewer. If the file is also an archive, FAE shows you
the contents, and you can view files in that one also.
A : Archive Statistics: This command will show you the name of the
────────────────── current file, as well as some statistics
related to it. You can also see the archive type, and wether or
not the file is protected by a security enveloppe.
C : Clean Archive: Allows you to remove all files present in the
───────────── compressed file that are in the trashcan file. Of
course, you must confirm before the FAE processes the archive.
D : Delete File: Deletes the file from the archive but first it asks if
─────────── you want to add the deleted file to the trashcan. The
trashcan is the BBSADS.TXT file supplied with the FAE and is a list
of BBS ads, and other useless files that inflate compressed files
for nothing. CTRL+D deletes all tagged files, but does not offer
to put the filenames in the trashcan.
E : Extract a file: Extracts the current file to the specified default
────────────── directory. Using CTRL+E produces the same result
for all tagged files.
G : Archive Password: Allows you to indicate the password for encrypted
──────────────── ZIP/ARJ files. Please keep in mind that this
feature is not available for LZH and SQZ archives. Every time you
enter a new archive, FAE resets this field to blank for security
reasons.
I : Test file integrity: This option allows you to test a compressed
─────────────────── file. But for now, it does nothing if the
file is corrupt. This is not a virus scanner!
P : Change Extract Path: This option will allow you to change the
─────────────────── default directory where files are extracted
when using the archive manager. If the directory specified does
not exist, FAE will offer to create it for you. Changes made here
are valid until you exit the program.
-=-=-=[ PC-Board FAE Documentation (c) 1993 Steffan Surdek - Page 21 ]=-=-=-
S : Sort Files: Allows you to sort the files in the present archive.
────────── You can presently sort by filename, extension, packed
size, date and path. I will add more methods if it becomes
necessary. This only processes the displayed list, it DOES NOT
affect the archive contents in any way.
T : Tag File: Tags the current file to do batch commands on the
──────── selected files. Using CTRL+T tags every file in the
list.
U : Untag File: Untags the current file if it was tagged. Once again,
────────── CTRL+U untags all tagged files.
ALT+J: Jump to DOS: If you need to check anything in DOS while
─────────── you are in this menu, this option will perform a
DOS shell, swapping current memory to XMS/EMS/disk for maximum
available memory.
Special notes about this section...
────────────────────────────────
* FAE recognizes archives through their signatures not by using the
file extension. So don't be surprised if a file is loaded in the
Archive Manager but doesn't have the proper file extension.
* Some files in archives have special characters in their names
(i.e., spaces or !) when processing these, it is better to tag them
and then do the command that you want to do. This problem usually
happens because archiver uses the character in question (! to pass
a file list) or ignores it on the command line (space). I will fix
this in the next version.
* The code for processing SQZ files is very preliminary, but it
should process most files correctly. If you find a file that FAE
cannot use, please send it to the support BBS.
Suggestions When Using FAE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I designed FAE with speed in mind. I'm writing this program using
a 286 computer (yeah, really!) so when I say that it's fast, I'm talking
on a slow computer. Most of the configurable options will either speed
up or slow down the FAE, but some are necessary.
* The first thing that I suggest is using the "Offline Scan" option
in FAESET. Why? Because if you use the remove offline command in
an area with many offline files, you can lose a lot of files in a
matter of seconds.
But, when using the "Offline Scan", FAE will alert you if a file
area has more than a certain percentage of offline files in an
area. This protects you from scrapping an entire area accidentally.
* Another option that I recommend, is the "Sort around comment" flag.
With this on, when sorting, FAE will ignore all lines that are
there as comment lines, it sorts around them.
* One feature that is good (and not planned!) happens with comment
lines. If there is a file name as the first word, when mass
uploading files, FAE will not upload this file. This is very
useful if you update your master file list every night and it
always has the same name.
* When in the file listings, you can do SHIFT+letter to jump to the
first/next file name beginning with that letter.
Future Plans
~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Make FAE faster and smarter.
* Put in a search for duplicate files.
* Support more archive types in the archive manager (suggestions are
welcome!).
* Add more conference wide commands
* Expand command line parameters.
* and much... much more!
Editing Commands
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While editing, there are many commands available. Here they are:
CTRL-Left : Move left one word
CTRL-Right : Move right one word
Left Arrow : Move left one character
Right Arrow : Move right one character
Home : Move to beginning of line
End : Move to end of line
Backspace : Delete previous character
Delete : Delete current character
CTRL-Backspace : Delete previous word
CTRL-Y : Delete line
Insert : Toggle Insert/Overwrite mode
Return : Accept and save edited line
Escape : Abort edition and restore previous entry.
Known Bugs/Problems
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this section, I will briefly show some problems that ─>MIGHT<─
occur with this program. I tested rigorously, but I do not have time to
fix everything. So here is a rundown of a few of the bugs that I know
are present at this time:
* When moving files, should it be from one area to another, of one
conference to another, if you get a message "ERROR: Cannot move
FILENAME.EXT", this message says it cannot physically move the
file, either because the file is not present on disk, or because
there is a problem with the destination path (i.e., file doesn't
exist, disk full, etc.). FAE still moves the file record to the
new location though.
If this is a problem for anybody, leave me a message, and I'll fix
it ASAP.
* This is a dumb bug, but here goes. The program might crash if you
do not specify a text viewer, mainly because it won't know what to
do with the file. I'll fix this shortly.
Technical Support
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can get technical support by either by calling the support
board, or by sending me a letter directly. Unregistered users will get
help by mail only if they send me a self-addressed stamped envelope.
When contacting me for support, tell me about your equipment (XT, 386,
486, etc.), also mention the nature of your problem. Don't just say
things like: "When I press enter, I can't edit the description". Try to
be as specific as possible, and also, if you can recreate the problem,
tell me how so I can help you.
If you have suggestions, or comments, don't be a stranger, I take
note of every new idea and try to put it in the program.

All FAE users (registered or unregistered) are welcome to call the
support BBS to get answers to their questions. When creating your user
account, tell the sysop you are a user of the program, and you will get
access to the support conference.
