  14.    [ ChatBox 2.7 New Features 03/04/94 ] -------------------------------------
  15.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  16. *  ChatBox may now always use (Sysop's choice) the VIP Sound when a VIP Caller
  17.    pages.  By default, ChatBox will only use the Sysop defined "VIP Sound"  if
  18.    a VIP Caller is actually paging outside normal paging hours.  A new  toggle
  19.    in CBSETUP will cause ChatBox to ALWAYS use the VIP Sound when a VIP Caller
  20.    is paging, even if the page is occurring during normal paging hours.  After
  21.    selecting #1 from the CBSETUP main menu,  press PgDn once to edit this  new
  22.    ChatBox setting.
  23.  
  24. *  When  a VIP Caller is paging, ChatBox will now display "VIP" in the  "Press
  25.    space to answer" bar that appears on the Sysop's screen during a page.
  26.  
  27. *  Support was  added for PCBoard's "PCB" environment variable  modem  setting
  28.    overrides of the modem settings found in PCBOARD.DAT.  The PCB switches are
  29.    /PORTx  /PORTxF  /OS /COMx: /BASE:xxx  /IRQ:x. Use of these switches is not
  30.    generally recommended.

  32. *  The  Sysop  may  allow the caller to end the chat  session.  This is a  new
  33.    toggle in CBSETUP.EXE. It is OFF by default. If it is turned ON, the caller
  34.    will  be able to enter Ctrl-Q to end the chat session.  After  selecting #1
  35.    from the CBSETUP main menu, press PgDn once to edit this setting.  Allowing
  36.    a caller to end a chat session is not generally recommended.
  37.  
  38. *  The QUICK.DOC in the last two releases of ChatBox erroneously  referred  to
  39.    a  file  called SYSPAGE.PPE in the example installation illustration.  This
  40.    should have been illustrated as OPAGE.PPE.
  41.  
  42. *  If  the "Update USERNET.XXX" setting was not disabled in  CBSETUP,  ChatBox
  43.    did not always update it to reflect that a caller was chatting with Sysop.

  45. *  The  ChatBox distribution ZIP will no longer contain a CHATBOX.CNF so  that
  46.    those  who extract the whole new package over their existing  configuration
  47.    will not lose this file. CBSETUP.EXE will (and always did) create the  file
  48.    with default parameters if it does not exist.

  56. * ChatBox now supports a list of Sysop configurable dates where paging is  not
  57.   permitted.  These are actual dates in MM-DD (month-day) format  (not days of
  58.   the week, which can be configured using CBSETUP). Dates like holidays can be
  59.   entered  in advance.  The file name containing the dates is a  simple  ASCII
  60.   text file called DATE.NO and is edited with any text editor. Each DATE to be
  61.   blocked is entered on a new line, and the date must be in MM-DD  (month-day)
  62.   format.  If the month (MM) is less than 10, it must begin with a  0  (zero).
  63.   For example, New Year's day would be entered as 01-01.
  64.  
  65. * If  logging the conversation to disk files (CHATLOG.x where x is the  node),
  66.   ChatBox  will  add a header to the CHATLOG file when the chat  begins  which
  67.   includes the caller's name, city/state, date, and time.
  68.  
  69. * ChatBox  now contains a parameter to allow the caller's full name to  appear
  70.   in the ChatBox 'border' instead of just the first name.  This feature is not
  71.   needed under normal circumstances.  The parameter is on page #2 of the  MAIN
  72.   setup options in CBSETUP.  Press F1 at the parameter for additional help.

  76.    [ ChatBox 2.5 New Features 11/19/93 ] -------------------------------------

  79. * The sysop may now import text files to display to the caller while chatting.
  80.   Press ALT-I, and a box will appear (on the Sysop screen only) asking for the
  81.   text file name to import.  If the file is found, ChatBox will  automatically
  82.   begin displaying the  file.  After the file has displayed, a prompt  appears
  83.   advising  that the "end of file" has been reached, and allows the caller  to
  84.   press (Enter) to resume split-screen chatting (if split-screen mode was used
  85.   prior to the text file import).
  86.  
  87. * The  addition  of the new ALT-I import feature made it necessary  to  expand
  88.   the ALT-H Sysop status line help.  Repeatedly pressing ALT-H will toggle two
  89.   different sets of help, one for the Sysop function keys and another for  the
  90.   Sysop ALT keys.  The help now describes the commands much better than in the
  91.   recent versions of ChatBox, since there is now room to spread them out.
  92.  
  93. * If "Leave a comment" (after an unanswered page) is enabled, ChatBox will now
  94.   "type in" the "C" for comment with a leading carriage-return. This will help
  95.   in  situations where ChatBox returns to PCBoard and a BRDM (menu) is  longer
  96.   than  one screen, requiring a "More?" prompt.  This leading  carriage-return
  97.   will be used by the "More?" prompt instead of the "C" for comment,  allowing
  98.   the "C" to be entered at the PCBoard main menu.

  100. * If you are using the SYSCHAT.PPE (F10 or SHIFT-F10 replacement) from ChatBox
  101.   version 2.4, it should be replaced with the one that comes with 2.5. The one
  102.   that  came with 2.4 caused PCBoard to not give chat credit if  the  caller's
  103.   minutes left went "negative" (if the chat lasted for longer than the  caller
  104.   was supposed to be on). To replace SYSCHAT.PPE, simple copy the new one from
  105.   ChatBox 2.5 over the old one in your ChatBox directory.
  106.  
  107. * The SYSPAGE.PPE has been renamed to OPAGE.PPE. It seems that some folks were
  108.   mixing up SysPAGE.PPE ("O" replacement) and  SysCHAT.PPE ("F10 replacement")
  109.   during installation.
  110.  
  111. * The last ChatBox release (2.4) added RIP screen and mouse field clearing  if
  112.   the  caller was in RIP mode.  In certain circumstances, hot keys  associated
  113.   with  RIP mouse fields were not cleared.  Extra steps have been included  to
  114.   make sure all RIP areas are cleared before ChatBox executes.

  122. * The  Sysop  may now initiate a ChatBox chat with the F10  key (un-shifted!).
  123.   This requires the SYSCHAT.PPE file. See page #6 in CHATBOX.DOC for complete,
  124.   step-by-step installation instructions.

  126. * The Sysop may still use SHIFT-F10 to initiate a ChatBox chat.  This requires 
  127.   the  SYSCHAT.PPE file and a slight installation modification to the way  the
  128.   PPE  is installed in the PCBSetup installation.  See page #7 in  CHATBOX.DOC
  129.   for complete instructions.

  131.   > NOTE:  In  either of the above cases,  if you are using  SYSCHAT.PPE  from 
  132.     ChatBox 2.3 you MUST now use the SYSCHAT.PPE enclosed with later  versions
  133.     of ChatBox and install it as per CHATBOX.DOC.

  135. * Support for PCBoard 15.x PSA parameter profiling and editing has been  added
  136.   to the ChatBox ALT-P (profile) command when chatting with a caller.  PCBoard
  137.   "PSA" areas are those functions in PCBoard 15.x such as the  Address, Alias,
  138.   Verification,  Notes,  Password, and Caller Statistics. If these  areas  are 
  139.   turned  on  in  PCBoard by the Sysop, they will be able to  be  profiled  in 
  140.   ChatBox  by pressing F2 (same as PCBSM) to rotate through the  areas  (after 
  141.   pressing  ALT-P to see the caller's profile).  The contents of each PSA  may 
  142.   be edited while chatting in the same fashion that older versions of  ChatBox 
  143.   allowed editing of the callers settings (with the exception of the Alias PSA 
  144.   which is unsuitable for changing by a process other than PCBoard or PCBSM).
  145.  
  146. * The Sysop may now create their own customized "beep" sound to use for paging 
  147.   in addition to several built-in sounds.  This is sound choice #13 and may be 
  148.   edited by selecting the appropriate CBSETUP main menu choice.  Sound #13 may 
  149.   then be selected in place of any previously selected sound selections.
  150.                
  151. * If the caller is using RIP graphics mode in PCBoard, ChatBox will clear  the 
  152.   caller's  RIP  screen  and set it to 25-line mode when first  run.  This  is 
  153.   useful where RIP menus are used in PCBoard that set the caller's screen as a
  154.   full graphics window and leave little or no areas for a text process such as
  155.   ChatBox to display regular text characters.
  156.  
  157. * A  new  setting  has been added to CBSETUP that allows the  Sysop  to  force 
  158.   ChatBox to ask the "Reason for paging" question even if a page is  attempted 
  159.   when  the  Sysop is not available (paging hours, F4 toggled off,  etc.).  By 
  160.   default,  ChatBox does not ask this question if it knows the  caller  cannot 
  161.   currently page the Sysop.  Some Sysops would prefer ChatBox ask the question 
  162.   regardless,  since the "Reason" will be written to the node's CALLER log and
  163.   the Sysop can later see why the caller wanted to page them (even though  the 
  164.   page  did not occur).  After selecting #1 from the CBSETUP main menu,  press 
  165.   PgDn once to edit this (and other new) ChatBox setting(s).
  166.  
  167. * The  "Reason for page" answer is written to the CALLER log  differently.  It 
  168.   now has its own "line" (entry). In previous versions of ChatBox the "reason" 
  169.   was appended to the "Operator Paged at 00:00" entry.  The reason now appears
  170.   on its own line AFTER the "Operator Paged at 00:00" entry.
  171.  
  172. * ChatBox will now use appropriate language "Y" and "N" (Yes/No) characters if
  173.   configured in the PCBoard 15.x multi-language data file.
  174.  
  175. * The  new SYSPAGE.PPE with ChatBox 2.4 will turn on and off the "flashing  p" 
  176.   on  the Sysops status line in PCBoard.  The "flashing p" is used in  PCBoard 
  177.   to  alert the Sysop the caller has attempted to page them during  the  call. 
  178.   If the page is answered by the Sysop, the "p" will not appear.   SYSPAGE.PPE 
  179.   is used as the "O" command replacement for ChatBox with PCBoard 15.x
  180.  
  181. * For  over-all consistency, ChatBox now updates the PCBoard 15.x  USERNET.XXX
  182.   file with "Paging Sysop" and "Chatting with Sysop" settings. This is done by
  183.   default  if ChatBox  is started with the new "F10" (un-shifted)  method.  In
  184.   this  mode, an actual PCBoard chat has in fact "started"  (although  ChatBox 
  185.   takes over) but because PCBoard started to chat, it updates USERNET.XXX. For 
  186.   consistency,  ChatBox  will  update USERNET.XXX itself when  used  in  other 
  187.   modes.   This can be disabled, if desired, in CBSETUP.  After  selecting  #1 
  188.   from  the  CBSETUP main menu, press PgDn once to edit this (and  other  new) 
  189.   ChatBox  setting(s). NOTE: ChatBox will not update USERNET.XXX  to  indicate 
  190.   "Paging the Sysop" until (and if) the host actually starts paging the Sysop.
  191.         
  192. * The  "chat  greeting" in PCBTEXT record #333 has been moved  to  CBSETUP  to 
  193.   accommodate  the new un-shifted F10 method of initiating a Sysop chat.  This 
  194.   must be configured in CBSETUP, even if you are not using the new F10 method,
  195.   as ChatBox no longer retrieves this record from PCBTEXT.
  196.  
  197. * Previous  versions of ChatBox supported several command-line  parameters  to 
  198.   over-ride certain ChatBox functions.  Because long command-lines are now not 
  199.   possible with some of the "PPE" installation modes of ChatBox, these are now
  200.   settings  in the CBSETUP utility.  These command-line options were:  /NOLPT,
  201.   /NOBEEP and /NOCALLER.  After selecting #1 from the CBSETUP main menu, press
  202.   PgDn once to edit these ChatBox settings. Press F1 (help) for an explanation
  203.   for each setting.
  204.  
  205. * To  accommodate DOOR developers with adding support in their  doors  to  use
  206.   ChatBox for paging, a command-line switch of /NOCOMMENT has been added. This
  207.   over-rides  the  "Leave a Comment"  setting in CBSETUP if set to YES.  Since
  208.   ChatBox stuffs the keyboard with the "Comment request" if the caller answers
  209.   YES to "Leave a comment?", this would be inappropriate  when ChatBox returns
  210.   to the calling DOOR instead of PCBoard. This switch allows Sysops to use one
  211.   ChatBox configuration file instead of having to configure a second one (with
  212.   the "Leave a comment" function turned off) for use with DOORS that will  use
  213.   ChatBox.

  218.    [ ChatBox 2.3 New Features 5/4/93 ] ---------------------------------------

  221. * NEW: ChatBox can now make use of the new PCBoard 15.x PPL command structure,
  222.   which allows ChatBox to be accessed in two new ways:
  223.  
  224.   >>  (1) The  "O" command in PCBoard 15.x  can now be made to access  ChatBox
  225.           (previously a door name such as PAGE was required to be entered).
  226.  
  227.   >>  (2) The Sysop may now start a chat from any point in PCBoard 15.x.  With
  228.           prior versions of PCBoard, the caller had to be at the PCBoard  main
  229.           prompt for the Sysop to start a chat with ChatBox.
  230.  
  231.   The instructions for installing ChatBox as described above with PCBoard 15.x
  232.   are located in CHATBOX.DOC, sections 2.0 through 2.3 on pages 4 through 6.
  233.  
  234. * The SET_F10 memory resident program is no longer supported.  SET_F10 allowed
  235.   the Sysop to choose between PCBoard and ChatBox for a Sysop initiated  chat.
  236.   If you are still using PCBoard 14.5/14.5a or still wish to use ChatBox as  a
  237.   door, ChatBox will now display (host only) a 3 second countdown when loading
  238.   so  the  Sysop can press a key to initiate the chat.  This only occurs  when
  239.   ChatBox  is installed as a door.  See CHATBOX.DOC for complete  instructions
  240.   on "Sysop Initiated Chats In Door Mode".
  241.  
  242. * Pressing ESC at any input prompt will clear any input and move the cursor to
  243.   the beginning of the field.  This makes ChatBox behave like PCBoard 15.x  in
  244.   this area.
  245.  
  246. * Update:  ChatBox 2.3 and earlier versions work with both PCBoard v.15.x  (in
  247.   beta test as of this writing) and PCBoard 14.5/14.5a.  You are NOT  required
  248.   to upgrade ChatBox for use with PCboard 15.x, unless you wish to use the new
  249.   features described above.

  257. * The Sysop may now press S to silence ChatBox while a caller is paging.  This 
  258.   turns  off the sound on the Sysop's computer, however the paging appears  to 
  259.   continue  as normal to the caller.  Pressing S is permitted only  after  the
  260.   paging (beeping) has started, and this "silencing" is only good for that one 
  261.   page attempt in ChatBox.
  262.  
  263. * Each  paging  period (per day) may now have its own  page  tone  configured. 
  264.   Previously  in ChatBox there was one Sysop configurable page tone which  was 
  265.   used for all pages.  Now a different tone may be configured (if desired) for
  266.   any of the three different paging time periods per day.  The typical use for
  267.   this will be for Sysops who wish to allow callers to page them at off hours,
  268.   but  would like to use the ChatBox silent flashing screen mode during  those
  269.   off hours and an audible tone during regular hours.
  270.  
  271.     - If installing Chatbox for the first time, all paging tones will  default 
  272.       to paging tone type #1 (the regular beep-beep).
  273.           
  274.     - If  upgrading to ChatBox 2.2 from a previous version, all of the  paging 
  275.       period tones will default to the tone previously configured in ChatBox. 
  276.  
  277.     - The  paging tones may now be set or changed on the same screen with  the 
  278.       daily paging time periods, using the CBSETUP.EXE installation program.
  279.  
  280. * A  new configuration option on the ChatBox main installation screen  in  the 
  281.   CBSETUP.EXE  program allows for a separate paging sound for VIP callers. VIP 
  282.   callers are special callers whose names are installed in  CHATBOX.VIP  which 
  283.   allows them to page outside of the set paging hours.  This special tone will
  284.   only be used when the VIP caller is paging during "off" hours.
  285.  
  286. * PCBoard /M multi-port software  is now supported by ChatBox.  ChatBox  reads
  287.   PCBOARD.DAT on the node where it is running and automatically determines  if
  288.   PCBoard /M multi-port  software  is in use on that node.  If it is,  ChatBox
  289.   will  automatically  use  the FOSSIL interface in the PCBoard /M  multi-port
  290.   communications  driver.  No special configuration is  necessary  when  using
  291.   ChatBox version 2.2 with PCBoard /M multi-port software.
  292.  
  293. * The  (PAB)  (Printer, Alarm, Bell) indicators on the status line  will  also 
  294.   include M for multi-port if ChatBox is being used with PCBoard /M software.
  295.  
  296. * Added  support  for extended IRQ use  (above IRQ 7).  Previous  versions  of 
  297.   ChatBox  provided  non-standard COM support with IRQ 1 through  7.  The  IRQ 
  298.   value  may  now be 1 through 15.  ChatBox reads this  information  from  the 
  299.   appropriate   PCBoard  system files.  Use of ChatBox with  non-standard  COM 
  300.   ports requires no additional installation by the Sysop.
  301.  
  302. * While  earlier  versions of ChatBox were DESQview aware  and  behaved,  some 
  303.   performance degradation was discovered when using "virtualized" screens with
  304.   DESQview-386.  ChatBox's performance is now improved in these cases.

  312. * The  text position arrow character in each chat "box" is  now  configurable.
  313.   Use CBSETUP to set the character from the default ">" to any ASCII character
  314.   between 32 and 255.  Control characters (below ASCII 32) cannot be used  due
  315.   to the inability of some communication programs to display them properly.
  316.  
  317. * V.I.P.  pagers (callers chosen by the Sysop who may page "after hours")  are 
  318.   now  reminded that it is "after hours" if they attempt to page during  same.
  319.   A  file  named VIP (language extensions allowed) will be displayed  and  the 
  320.   caller will be asked if they wish to proceed with the page.
  321.  
  322. * The  language extension edit field in the ALT-P profile has  been  enhanced.
  323.   Support  for  language extensions less than three characters long  has  been 
  324.   added.  ChatBox now reads the PCBoard multi-language data  file  (PCBML.DAT) 
  325.   and  only allows the Sysop to enter a language extension if it is  installed 
  326.   in  the data file.  Additionally, if multi-lingual files are turned  off  in 
  327.   PCBoard, ChatBox will skip over the language parameter completely while  the 
  328.   Sysop is editing the caller profile. 
  329.  
  330. * In  ChatBox version 2.0, the paging time period parameters in  CBSETUP  were 
  331.   moved  to  a second screen and were accessed by pressing PgDn while  at  the 
  332.   first screen.  This was occasionally overlooked during installation  despite 
  333.   the highlighted prompt at the bottom of the screen.  CBSETUP now starts with 
  334.   a  menu  screen  which allows easy selection between  the  two  installation 
  335.   screens. 
  336.  
  337. * The  method used to echo events to the printer (if logging is turned  on  in
  338.   PCBoard) has been made more "generic" in ChatBox.
  339.  
  340. * Three  command line parameters have been added.  These are not likely to  be 
  341.   needed  by most Sysops, but if you need them, you REALLY need  them.  Adding 
  342.   them to CBSETUP is not planned since they should rarely be used.
  343.  
  344.   /NOLPT   - ChatBox follows the printer toggle in PCBoard.  If you wish  only
  345.              for PCBoard to echo caller log activity to the printer, add  this
  346.              to the end of the CHATBOX.EXE command line as outlined below.
  347.  
  348.   /NOBEEP  - ChatBox follows the F7 local alarm in PCBoard.  If you wish  only
  349.              for PCBoard to beep locally at caller input errors, etc. add this
  350.              to the end of the CHATBOX.EXE command line as outline below. This
  351.              does NOT turn off the sound when a caller is paging.
  352.  
  353.  /NOCALLER - ChatBox  writes appropriate entries to the current node's  caller 
  354.              file  (see  CHATBOX.DOC for a complete list of entries).  If  you
  355.              wish only for PCBoard to place entries in caller log  files,  add
  356.              this to the end of the CHATBOX.EXE command line (outlined below).
  357.  
  358.   To add any of these toggles, edit the ChatBox door batch file (i.e. PAGE) as
  359.   shown below: 
  360.  
  361.     D:\CHATBOX\CHATBOX.EXE CHATBOX.CNF D:\PCB\  /NOLPT /NOBEEP /NOCALLER
  362.  
  363.   All three are shown in the example above for illustration purposes only. You 
  364.   may enter one, two, or all three of them, in any order desired. Again, it is 
  365.   recommended to use these toggles only if they are REALLY needed.

  370.    [ ChatBox 2.0 New Features 3/27/92 ] --------------------------------------

  373. * It is mandatory to run the new CBSETUP.EXE on ANY and ALL  existing  ChatBox 
  374.   configuration (.CNF) files.  ChatBox will terminate with a message to do  so 
  375.   if version 2.0 is attempted to run with pre-version 2.0 configuration files.
  376.   New  parameters which need to be set will be marked with a blinking  "*"  on
  377.   the very left of the screen.
  378.                                                 
  379. * During  a chat, the Sysop may press ALT-P for a  profile  screen  containing 
  380.   many of the caller's statistics and settings.  In  Split-Screen  chat,  this 
  381.   appears over the "box" the Sysop would normally type in, and the  caller  is 
  382.   unaware of its presence. In fact, the caller may keep typing while the Sysop 
  383.   is reviewing  the  profile!  After the Sysop has reviewed the  profile,  the 
  384.   contents  of the Sysop's "chatbox" will be restored.  In  regular  non-split 
  385.   screen  chat mode, the caller will not be able to continue typing while  the 
  386.   profile information is popped up on the Sysop's screen.
  387.                                    
  388. * While  the above ALT-P information is on the screen, the Sysop may edit  any 
  389.   of the caller's parameters displayed by pressing ALT-E for edit.  The  Sysop 
  390.   may  then  cursor through the parameters making changes  as  needed.  Caller 
  391.   input  is not accepted while the Sysop is actually Editing the Profile.  The 
  392.   Sysop may  press ALT-S to save and record any changes or ALT-A to abort  any 
  393.   changes.  After pressing ALT-S or ALT-A while editing, chatting will  resume 
  394.   as normal.
  395.  
  396. * The page length time (the number of seconds ChatBox beeps, etc.) may now  be 
  397.   configured with CBSETUP.EXE.  Valid lengths are 15 to 90 seconds.  There  is 
  398.   no  need to change record #97 in PCBTEXT files, ChatBox  will  automatically 
  399.   change  the '30' in  "ends in 30 seconds"  to whatever you place here.  This
