  67. Installing the Driver
  68. ---------------------
  69. 1. Run the INSTALL program for your ATI video adapter (found on your original
  70.    ATI diskette #1) under DOS or in a Full Screen DOS session (under OS/2)
  71.    and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you have selected
  72.    an appropriate monitor type.  OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be
  73.    configured for the IBM default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.  Other 
  74.    resolutions may be configured at any vertical refresh.  Note that only 
  75.    those modes which have been enabled in the power-up configuration will
  76.    be available under OS/2.
  77.  
  78. 2. Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  79.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the install may not work
  80.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  81.  
  82. 3. Before proceeding, ensure that you've unpacked the OS2V12.ZIP file into
  83.    a directory containing LOADER.EXE and LHARC.EXE, then run the LOADER
  84.    program to install the driver files.  A README file containing 
  85.    instructions for this procedure is included in OS2V12.ZIP.
  86.  
  87. 4. Open an OS/2 window or full screen session and type
  88.  
  89.         DSPINSTL
  90.  
  91.    then press the enter key.
  92.  
  93. 5. When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  94.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  Select the option for
  95.    ATI mach8/mach32.  If you don't see this option, ensure that the 
  96.    ATIM32.DSC file is located in your \OS2\INSTALL directory.
  97.  
  98. 6. When the source directory panel appears, change the source directory
  99.    to C:\MACH_OS2 (substitute your OS/2 boot drive for C: if appropriate).
  100.    Then click the Install button.
  101.    
  102. 7. When the drivers have been installed, a message will appear, indicating
  103.    that changes have been made to your configuration.  Click OK, EXIT the 
  104.    OS/2 session, and Shut Down OS/2.
  105.  
  106. 8. When you start OS/2 again, the ATI PM driver will first come up in a
  107.    640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the following steps to change the screen 
  108.    resolutions or number of colors:
  109.  
  110.    a. Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  111.    b. Open 'System Setup' icon.
  112.    c. Open 'System' icon.
  113.    b. Select the 'Screen' tab.
  114.    e. Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  115.    f. Point to the title-bar icon and double click to close the window.
  116.    g. Shut down and restart your system.
  117.

  119. NOTES and Bug Fixes
  120. ===================
  121.  
  122. . 8514-ULTRA.
  123. -------------
  124. Initialization of the 800x600x256 mode on an 8514-ULTRA requires direct
  125. access to the 8514-ULTRA ROM.
  126.  
  127. a. On Micro Channel machines, the ROM address for the 8514-ULTRA is fixed
  128.    at C680.  This physical address is not accessible directly through OS/2.
  129.    Since initialization of the 800x600x256 mode requires direct access to
  130.    the 8514-ULTRA ROM, this mode is not available on MCA systems.
  131.  
  132. b. ISA machine users : if you can change the location of the 8514-ULTRA ROM
  133.    (using the INSTALL program on ATI disk #1; Set Power Up Configuration),
  134.    please set it to one of C800, C900, CA00, CB00,.....,etc.  The ROM must
  135.    be located at a 4K page boundary (ie at a hex address that ends in "00"), 
  136.    to be accessible under OS/2.  Unless the ROM is accessible, the 
  137.    800x600x256 mode cannot be initialized.
  138.  
  139. . Switching from WINOS2 full screen directly to full screen dos, os/2.
  140. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  141. Gives a very dim screen on 64K color modes.  This is now fixed.
  142.  
  143. . PM : Open System setup, menus are too slow
  144. ------------------------------------------
  145. This has been speeded up by a factor of two.
  146.

  149. Extra Notes
  150. -------------
  151. . Remember that you must close all WIN-OS/2 sessions or the install will fail.
  152.  
  153. . RUNNING DOS EGA/VGA APPLICATIONS UNDER OS/2 ON GRAPHICS ULTRA +/PRO
  154.  
  155. DOS graphics applications that run in any of the EGA or VGA planar modes
  156. listed below can not run in a DOS window session under OS/2.  There is no
  157. separate VGA memory on the display adapter to virtualize the VGA graphics
  158. mode drawing in an accelerator drawing mode. Therefore, please use these
  159. programs in a DOS full screen session.
  160.

  162.         mode 0eh        640x200 16 colors
  163.         mode 0fh        640x350  2 colors
  164.         mode 10h        640x350 16 colors
  165.         mode 11h        640x480  2 colors

  168. These modes cannot be supported as vga memory is generally not available
  169. when hardware accelerator features are enabled.  We can only enable these
  170. features at a big penalty in performance, so they will not be enabled.
  171.  
  172. . RUNNING THE DISPLAY ADAPTER'S TEST PROGRAM
  173.  
  174. The display adapter diagnostics program should only be run in a DOS full
  175. screen session. Also, do not attempt to switch to PM desktop or other tasks
  176. in the middle of the diagnostic, otherwise the desktop might be corrupted.
  177.  
  178. . CORRECTING PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLATION.
  179.  
  180. If, after installation, you are unable to start OS/2 2.1, please consult
  181. Page 128 of the OS/2 2.1 supplied Installation Guide :
  182.  
  183.         Resetting Display Adapter to VGA (SETVGA)
  184.  
  185. Ignore any errors that you may get at the end of the procedure.  The
  186. SETVGA.CMD script assumes that an SVGA driver is installed and will complain
  187. if it fails to delete it.
  188.  
  189. . CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTIONS IN PM SYSTEM SETUP.
  190.  
  191. After clicking on the resolution you wish, close the system window by double
  192. clicking on its top left icon.  This will write your settings to disk.  Your
  193. changes will not take effect until the system window is closed and you reboot
  194. your machine.
  195.  
  196. . Hanging with DRAM cards
  197.  
  198. We have had a problem with hanging DRAM cards.  This is now fixed, but dram
  199. card users may experience slower performance than vram card owners.
  200.

  202.  
  203. Current known problems and limitations
  204. --------------------------------------
  205.  
  206. 1. DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing Ultimotion video clips in 64K color
  207. mode, the picture comes up as mostly blue. Playing Indeo video clips will
  208. hang the system. This is due to improper handling of high and true colour 
  209. modes by the OS/2 Digital Video Player. Please switch to 256 color mode to 
  210. play these videos and wait for IBM's fix.
  211.  
  212. 2. WP for OS/2, 123 for OS/2. These two programs are confirmed to have
  213. problems running in 64K color mode. Please switch to 256 color mode to use
  214. them and wait for the fix from their respective manufacturers.
  215.  
  216. 3. 640x480 IN 70HZ REFRESH RATE. OS/2 INSTALL and the generic VGA driver
  217. have a problem displaying 640x480 at a 70Hz refresh rate. Change the refresh 
  218. rate to the IBM default of 60Hz to install OS/2, as noted in step 1 of 
  219. "Installing the Driver".  Note that this is a limitation of OS/2, and ONLY 
  220. applies to the 640x480 resolution.  Other resolutions may be configured at 
  221. any vertical refresh rate.
  222.  
  223. 4. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK IN DIGITAL DISPLAY. When the clock is running in digital
  224. mode without a title bar, switching to any full screen task and back will
  225. corrupt the clock display. This bug is still under investigation.  A
  226. temporary workaround is to use the clock in analog mode or in digital mode
  227. with a title bar. Refreshing the clock window will also correct the display.
  228.  
  229. 5. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK AND OS/2 DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing a video clips
  230. with a seamless WIN-OS/2 CLOCK running at the same time, some artifacts may
  231. show on screen. This bug is still under investigation. Close the seamless
  232. WIN-OS/2 clock before using the digital video player.
  233.  
  234. 6. OS/2 LOCKS ON SHUTDOWN. Periodically OS/2 may lock during shutdown before
  235. displaying the "Shutdown is completed" message.  This is a documented problem
  236. with Presentation Manager.  The following appears in the OS/2 README file:
  237.  
  238.  o   During a system shutdown, there might be
  239.        times when the "Shutdown is completed"
  240.        message is not displayed.  If this happens,
  241.        wait until all disk activity is complete,
  242.        then power off the system.
  243.  
  244. 7. OS/2 SELECTIVE INSTALL REPORTS THE 8514/A DRIVER INSTALLED.  The Selective
  245. Install feature of OS/2 actually searches the hardware in the system, and
  246. detects the 8514/A compatibility of the ATI accelerators.  Selective Install
  247. will report the current driver as being "8514/A", even after you've installed
  248. the ATI OS/2 drivers.
  249.  
  250. 8. WRONG DRAWINGS ON OVERLAPPED WINDOWS.
  251. Running multiple seamless windows sessions could cause drawing on
  252. overlapping windows to be wrong. Problem is currently under investigation.
  253. Refreshing the problem window will clear the problem.
  254.  
  255. 9. OUT OF SYNC MONITORS, VGA, AND MACH32. (640x480 MUST BE AT 60Hz)
  256. To run the OS/2 VGA driver for the MACH32 card, you MUST use the ATI 
  257. INSTALL program to select a 60Hz (IBM Default) refresh rate for the 
  258. 640x480 resolution.
  259.  
  260. If not, the monitor will be out of sync.  After the first time you boot
  261. OS/2 in VGA mode, you can reset the refresh rate to any value your
  262. monitor supports, but every time you run DSPINSTL, you must reset the
  263. refresh rate to 60Hz.
  264.
