  1. OS/2 WINS BYTE MAGAZINE'S 1993 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

  7. IBM's award-winning 32-bit PC operating system, has snapped up BYTE
  8. Magazine's "1993 Award of Excellence," bringing the total industry
  9. awards to 24 since Version 2 was shipped in March 1992.

  11. OS/2 2.1 was the only software/operating system recognized as one of the
  12. three "top vote-getters," sharing the honors with the IBM/Apple/Motorola
  13. PowerPC 601(b) and Intel's Pentium(b) processor.
  14.  
  15. BYTE Magazine's 1993 Editorial Awards, which comprise Awards of
  16. Excellence, Merit and Distinction, recognize breakthrough products that
  17. set the standards for innovation and price/performance.  According to
  18. BYTE, of the many computer-related products and technologies that
  19. debuted in 1993, only 71 earned the prestigious awards and, of those,
  20. only 16 are honored with Awards of Excellence.

  22. Jon Udell, BYTE's senior technical editor-at-large, lauded IBM's OS/2.
  23. "Running OS/2 2.1 on an 8 MB machine that hasn't a prayer of running
  24. Windows NT, I find that it delivers many of the same benefits: robust
  25. multithreading and multitasking, a comprehensive 32-bit API, an
  26. advanced file system, and support for Windows 3.1 software," Udell
  27. said.  "Software developers have known for years that OS/2 is a far
  28. more productive environment than DOS plus Windows.  With the polish and
  29. maturity of version 2.1, more and more users are discovering the same
  30. advantage."
