sustaining the growing family literacy movement in the nation.
* Interact with the experts on such topics as:
Research: What do we know and what do we still need to know in
the field of family literacy?
Practice: What strategies work best for successful instruction
and program implementation in family literacy?
Policy: What major policy initiatives are shaping the future of
the family literacy movement?
* Grow and learn together with colleagues from all fifty states who
represent the tremendous diversity of family literacy programs
and practices.
Family literacy is one of the most promising, effective methods for
breaking the intergenerational cycle of under-education and poverty.
The 1994 conference theme, "Family Literacy: The Foundation for
Strengthening a Nation" will focus on family literacy as the
critical base for improvement of our nation's social, economic and
education systems. Health care reform, school reform, welfare
reform and our economic competitiveness depend on a strong
foundation of healthy, literate families. Because it builds on
family strengths and celebrates diversity, family literacy is
uniquely suited to provide the foundation on which to build local,
state and national initiatives for change with every ethnic group in
every region of the country.
The theme, coupled with the conference's objectives of enhancing
practice, deepening research, and expanding policies for family
literacy, will bring outstanding presenters from around the nation
together with policy-makers, administrators, practitioners and
researchers. The goal of the conference is to provide a national
understanding and response to the challenges facing the family
literacy movement as it is used to build the foundation for the
social, economic and education reforms of the decade.
Join with other policymakers, opinion leaders, service providers,
and state and local program planners in Louisville, the home of the
Kentucky Derby, during the most exciting week of the year! In
addition to the general conference schedule, special sessions will
be held for those interested in Chapter I, Head Start, Even Start,
Toyota Families for Learning, State Family Literacy Initiatives,
Adult Education, Family Support, ESL, and Native American issues.
