These reviews cover a couple comercial games I've played (and
shareware in some cases), and these reviews are my opinion. You may
like (or dislike) the games more than I do.
Please send in your reviews to my attention by entering a PRIVATE
message in the P&BNet Grapevine conference, or you can enter a
message to me on WME or U'NI Nets; or you can enter a message
to me on The White Star Line BBS modem: (708)823-4814. Games
reviewers always receive bylines in "Smoke and Mirrors," and
all material is copyrighted as owned by the original authors.

1. Simcity 2000

"If this game were any more realistic, it'd be illegal to turn it
off." This is what the game says on the back cover. And they were
right. If you ever played Simcity, you'll like this more.
Everything that the original had is back and enhanced. There are
more types of buildings; gifts; selectable sizes of zones, airports,
and seaports; your newspaper; a water system; and I would fill up
the article describing all the rest.

2. Battle Chess CD-ROM Edition
Company: Interplay
Type: Chess
System Req's.: .5 MB of disk space (or 34 MB for the animations; it
runs faster if you have them installed), 1.5 MB of RAM, Windows 3.1
(for MPCs), DOS 3.0 or greater, CD-ROM drive, sound source
(optional).
Copy Protection: NONE
Price: $70.00
This game had superb animation. But, there's a catch. (Wait, what
am I THINKING, there's always a catch!!) It was slow, even with 34
MB of my HD gone, which was only the first of my problems. It took
me a month to convince myself that my sound board wasn't playing the
music, but it was my CD-ROM drive. Then, every time I wanted to
play the game, I had to lean back 3 feet to reach the plug that
connected my speakers to my sound board to change it to the CD-ROM
drive. Then, when I got it working, the computer was just too hard
for me, or for anybody, for that matter. I decided to head for
greener pastures in the end.

3. Chessmaster 4000 Turbo
Company: Software Toolworks
Type: Chess
System Req's.: 3 MB of RAM, 3 MB of disk space, sound board
(optional), 256 color driver (recommended highly), Windows 3.1,
DOS 3.1 or higher.
Copy Protection: NONE Price: $45.00
In the beginning, when I got this, the graphics weren't the best.
In fact, they were the worst graphics I've ever seen on a Windows
program. Some SHAREWARE programs for Windows that I knew had better
graphics. Then, I got a new monitor with a 256 color driver. The
graphics were now the BEST I've ever seen. Anyone out there without
a 256 color driver, don't get this game. The sound was pretty good,
with the ability to play MIDI files and all, and you have the widest
selection of a difficulty levels I've ever seen. It does take a
LOOOOOONG time to load, however, which gives you time for a good
nap.

4. Bram Stoker's Dracula
Company: Psygnosis
Type: Action
System Req's.: 2 MB disk space, sound board (optional), 3 MB RAM,
DOS v. 2.2 or higher, mouse.
Copy Protection: NONE
Price: $35.00
This game got me going for a while. The sound was great, the
graphics were superb, but there were 2 things wrong. 1. Same
Wolfenstein-like view, same objetive, just another clone of another
good games. 2. The play control requires a mouse AND a keyboard,
not one or the other. And, it's pretty hard changing control
devices in the middle of a battle with the undead.

"Addictiveness"- 7
